Professor Richard Scolyer’s wife, Dr Katie Nicholl, has shared a heartbreaking update, as the pioneering Australian doctor continues to face his battle with brain cancer
Nicholl, shared the update on social media alongside several family photos, offering a candid glimpse into their ongoing journey.
“Things are steadily getting harder for Rich, and time with family and friends continues to be so important for us all,” she said.
“I know we’re not alone in this journey and we appreciate everyone’s continued love and support.”
Their daughter Emily also commented on the post, writing: “You and Dad are so strong!”
The images showed Prof Scolyer with his wife, including one photo of the pair looking into each other’s eyes.
Professor Scolyer, a world-leading pathologist, was jointly named Australian of the Year in 2024 alongside Melanoma Institute Australia co-director Professor Georgina Long for their groundbreaking cancer research.
He was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in 2023 and was initially given just eight months to live.
He later became the first brain cancer patient in the world to undergo a pioneering combination of immunotherapy before surgery, in an effort to better understand and treat the disease.
He has documented much of his experience through his blog, My Uncertain Path.
In a post shared in March, he wrote: “There seems to be further progression of my brain tumour (glioblastoma) affecting brain functioning … Whilst it is a bit disappointing, in the big picture it’s not the end of the road and I’ve got more to do!”
“I love and enjoy challenges. I certainly haven’t stopped yet.”
