Radio star Kyle Sandilands has revealed that the brain aneurysm he was diagnosed with last year is in such a complex position that doctors cannot perform the standard keyhole surgery normally used to treat the condition.
The 54-year-old broadcaster shared the update on The Debrief podcast, explaining that the aneurysm sits behind his right eye and is attached to multiple blood vessels, making surgery far more complicated.
“They can’t really operate on the aneurysm on the head because it’s attached to multiple blood vessels,” Sandilands said.
He said specialists had ruled out the less invasive keyhole procedure because of the aneurysm’s location.
“So the normal thing they can do with keyhole, they can’t do it. It’s behind my right eye. So they said they would have to cut all the way down this side of my face like a massive scar,” he said.
Instead, Sandilands was told the only surgical option would involve opening his skull.
“I’m already dealing with this,” he said, gesturing to his body, before adding: “So imagine looking like Frankenstein as well. Pop your skull out and get in there.”
Rather than proceed with such major surgery, Sandilands and his medical team have decided to monitor the aneurysm with regular scans.
“And I was like, ‘You know, let’s just see if it grows first’,” he said.
The radio personality also revealed he is living with a second aneurysm, this time in his chest, which is also being closely monitored.
“I’ve got to go to the cardiovascular surgeon because I’ve got another aneurysm in my chest as well. So they’ve got to monitor that one,” he said.
“And then in a couple of months’ time, they go and they have to go through that whole scan process again to see if it’s grown.”
The ongoing surveillance means regular scans and appointments with specialists have become part of his life, reflecting the reality for many Australians who live with medical conditions that require careful monitoring rather than immediate treatment.
Sandilands shared the health update while promoting his new four-part documentary series, in which he opens up about both his medical challenges and his well-publicised falling out with longtime radio partner Jackie ‘O’ Henderson.
