A Sydney rugby club has sanctioned a mother after she ran onto the field during what witnesses described as a brawl in Eastwood’s loss to Warringah at Epping Boys High School on Saturday.
The woman was seen walking onto the pitch during the match, which was part of the Second Grade Colts competition, and appeared to direct an angry verbal spray at at least one player. The confrontation happened in the 74th minute near the sideline, directly in front of the Warringah reserves.
Footage of the incident shows the woman, dressed in jeans and a pink top, striding into the middle of a melee involving as many as 10 players. She appeared to address one larger player in particular as the game had already moved further down the field.
The incident was first reported on 2GB, where a witness identified as Kylie described what unfolded. “There was not much in it. Two players were going at it in back play,” she said.
“The game had moved further down the field and then the mum ran on, saying ‘Get off my son’. And then all the Warringah players on the sideline started laughing because it was right in front of their bench.
“So as she was walking off, they copped a spray. It was pretty embarrassing.”
Kylie said the woman stayed near the sideline afterwards and refused to provide her name to officials. She also believed the incident only made things worse for the woman’s son.
“It’s embarrassing for him. For her. It’s embarrassing for the club,” she said.
“If it was a dad running on it would be a whole different conversation. Nobody would think it was cute or a passionate mum.”
According to 2GB, both the Sydney Rugby Union and Eastwood Rugby Club have sanctioned the woman.
The incident also drew comment from Wallabies great Nick Farr-Jones, who said he would back his wife if she did the same to protect one of their children.
“If my wife Angie jumped onto the field to protect one of my sons then good on her,” he said.
“Have a go.”
He said he admired “passionate and protective mothers”.
“Good on her,” he said on 2GB.
“It would have been spontaneous no doubt There wouldn’t have been a lot of premeditation.
“She’s in a spot of bother, but just give her a speeding fine and maybe one demerit point.”
It was otherwise a difficult day for Eastwood in the lower grades. The Second Grade Colts team was heavily beaten 95-14, while the club also lost in the First Grade Colts and Third Grade Henderson Shield competitions. However, Eastwood did enjoy success in the premier Shute Shield, defeating ladder leaders Warringah 27-24.
