A man has been charged with murder after police alleged he fatally attacked an elderly dog walker with a metal pole during a violent series of incidents in central Queensland.

Police claim the 36-year-old Bundaberg West man was driving a Subaru Liberty on Whitebridge Road at North Isis, near Childers, when he stopped the car around 2.38pm on Wednesday, got out and attacked an elderly pedestrian. It is alleged he punched the 78-year-old North Isis man in the head before striking him with a metal pole.

The elderly man, who was walking his dog at the time, suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

Police also allege that less than 10 minutes earlier, the same man deliberately reversed into a Mitsubishi Pajero. When the 65-year-old driver got out to inspect the damage, police say the Subaru driver reversed into him as well. He is then alleged to have punched the Mitsubishi driver several times before driving away.

Investigators further allege the man then went to Crescent Street at the intersection of Lord Street in Childers, where he assaulted a 66-year-old man.

Police said the alleged victims were not believed to be known to the accused.

Before those incidents, the man is also alleged to have been involved in another crash on the Bruce Highway at Glenorchy, where the Subaru was deliberately reversed into a Tesla before the driver was verbally abused.

Members of the public restrained the 36-year-old before police arrived and arrested him a short time later.

He has since been charged with multiple offences, including murder and attempted murder, and is due to appear in Gladstone Magistrates Court by video link on Thursday.

Investigations are continuing, and police are urging anyone with relevant footage or information to come forward.
