Disgraced former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has reportedly started a new job, more than a year after being released from prison on parole for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius, 39, was released on parole in January 2024 after serving part of a 13-year and five-month sentence for fatally shooting Steenkamp at their Pretoria home in 2013.
Before his conviction, Pistorius was one of the world’s most celebrated Paralympians, winning six Paralympic gold medals and making history at the London 2012 Olympics as the first double-amputee athlete to compete at an Olympic Games.
The Daily Mail reported that Pistorius is now working for a sound engineering company, although his exact role has not been disclosed.
A local resident told the publication: “We don’t want to know about him around here. He’s like a ghost.
“He’s disappeared off the face of the Earth and most people are happy for it to stay like that.
“Apparently he has a job now, although no major company would go near him.”
Pistorius is reportedly living with his uncle, Arnold, in the Pretoria suburb of Waterkloof, the same suburb where Steenkamp was killed.
He remains subject to strict parole conditions until his sentence expires in 2029. Those conditions include regular supervision, notifying authorities of any change of address or employment, continuing anger management therapy and attending programs addressing gender-based violence.
Pistorius shot Steenkamp four times through a locked bathroom door on Valentine’s Day in 2013. They had been dating since November 2012.
He maintained throughout the trial that he believed an intruder had entered his home and did not realise Steenkamp was behind the door until he forced it open.
However, an appeal court overturned his original culpable homicide conviction and found him guilty of murder in 2015.
Steenkamp, who was 29 when she died, was a model and law graduate who had hoped to become a barrister.
She had also appeared in television programs and advertising campaigns in South Africa before her death.
In November 2023, a parole board approved Pistorius’ release, with Steenkamp’s mother, June, reportedly not opposing the decision.
