Matildas star Kyra Cooney-Cross has shared an emotional tribute to her mum, Jessica, who passed away after battling a rare and aggressive cancer.

The 24-year-old soccer player took to social media on Tuesday to reveal that her mum passed away late last week.

“My biggest fear in life happened right in front of me, and never in my life did I think I’d be having to see you go so soon,” she began in her tribute.

Earlier this year, Jessica was diagnosed with Stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma, also known as bile duct cancer.

“You should still have another 45 years of precious life in front of you,” Kyra continued in her tribute.

“My biggest fear isn’t death. It’s seeing my mum so vulnerable. It’s losing my mum before I can give her the life she truly deserves.

“She’s given me everything, her love, her time, her strength, and she never asked for anything in return. She deserves the world, and I just want to give her all the happiness and love she’s given me.

“Nothing scares me more than a world where I can’t hear her voice. I can’t bear the thought of not feeling her hugs and kisses, not being able to tell her how much she means to me, not being able to call for my mum. I just want her to stay long enough to see that all her sacrifices mattered.”

Kyra added that despite her own battles, her mum continued to show up “every single time with a smile”.

“She is the most beautiful, patient, gentle, wise, loving, courageous, and strongest person I know, and I’m incredibly proud and grateful to be raised by this amazing woman. You’re so deeply loved by all.

“You’re a warrior. You deserve a cape.

“You are so unintentionally funny. I’m going to miss you giving me lectures and seeing you walk through that front door, and all the little things that make you, you. But I’m so glad you’re not in pain anymore.

“I hope you’re up there peacefully enjoying your nature walks, watering your plants, painting, drinking cups of tea, having naps, watching the sunrise, bird watching, and eating all the food in the world.

“You’re my biggest inspiration and the person I aspire to be. Mum, my favourite part is knowing that I’m a little piece of you. Gosh, I miss you so much. I love you.”

A few days after the diagnosis, Kyra, who was scheduled to play for Arsenal in the Women’s Super League, had to step out from the match to fly back to Australia to be with her mum.

The family also celebrated the bittersweet union between Jess and her partner Andy, who she married while in hospital, not long after the diagnosis.

Kyra’s teammates shared their messages of support, with Sam Kerr writing: “Sending love to you & your family Kyra”.

Ellie Carpenter, Hayley Raso, Steph Catley also shared their messages of love and support.
