Rumours are swirling around the future of Karl Stefanovic, with fresh reports suggesting Nine Network may already be eyeing a high-profile replacement for the veteran Today host.

Stefanovic is reportedly nearing the end of his current contract with the network, sparking speculation he could depart Today later this year after more than two decades as one of Australia’s most recognisable breakfast TV personalities.

Now, a new contender has emerged in the rumoured succession battle: actor and television presenter Rodger Corser.

Corser, best known for his role on McLeod’s Daughters, has recently been fronting The Floor on Channel 9, with his performance reportedly impressing senior executives at the network.

Media commentator Andrew Mercado told Yahoo Lifestyle that Nine executives would likely look internally when the time comes to replace Stefanovic.

However, Mercado questioned whether Corser would be willing to make the leap from acting and prime-time hosting into the demanding world of breakfast television, known for its brutal early starts and relentless schedule.

Despite the doubts, an insider speaking to New Idea claimed Corser was viewed by some within the network as an ideal candidate for the role.

“He can handle a ‘big-ticket’ TV program, he’s smart, likeable and knowledgeable – and let’s face it, he looks good on camera,” the source said.

“The execs at Nine would love to sign him up for Today, when that co-host spot becomes available.”

Stefanovic’s current deal is believed to be worth between $2 million and $2.8 million annually, with reports claiming the network would be willing to spend heavily to secure a marquee replacement.

According to the insider, executives are prepared to “pay a significant amount”, with Corser allegedly in a position to “name his price” should serious negotiations take place.

Neither Stefanovic nor Nine Network has publicly commented on the reports.
