Hyundai Motor Company Australia has recalled 4888 electric vehicles built between 2018 and 2023, covering the 2018 to 2023 Kona Electric and the 2018 to 2022 Ioniq Electric. The total includes 3478 Kona vehicles and 1402 Ioniq vehicles.

In recall notices lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, Hyundai warns: “A software issue in the Battery Management System (BMS) of both the Hyundai Kona and Ioniq may cause an electrical short circuit while charging or parked, leading to a vehicle fire.

The notices for the Kona EV and Ioniq EV can be found here.

“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”

Hyundai says owners of affected vehicles will be contacted in writing and asked to make an appointment with an authorised dealer as soon as possible. At the dealership, the EV battery will be checked and the car will receive a software update or a battery cell fix if needed, free of charge.

Owners can contact Hyundai Customer Care on 1800 186 306, or enter their VIN and find more information in the Safety recall section of Hyundai’s website. To have your vehicle checked, you can also contact your nearest Hyundai dealership.
