Kevin Landles and Mary Thompson have worked alongside each other in several aged care facilities for more than 10 years and as a couple for three years, and derailed wedding plans have seen them tie the knot in an unusual place: their workplace.

The couple originally planned their wedding for 2021, but were forced to push it back after their son was involved in a motorcycle accident.

After working at the Arcare aged care in Slacks Creek, Queensland, for a few months, they decided to celebrate their nuptials and give the residents a chance to enjoy the celebration too.

“When we were planning for our delayed wedding, we thought that this may be an opportunity to be married in front of those we care for and those we work alongside,” Kevin, who works as the Residence Manager, said.

“For the residents, we hope that they feel a part of our extended family, they recognise the value that we place on them and they can use the day to reminisce on their own happy memories over the years. After all, everyone loves a party!”

When they first met, Mary, the facility’s Clinical Lead, was initially impressed by Kevin’s sense of style and kind nature, while Kevin found her work ethic just as impressive.

The wedding incorporated Scottish and Māori cultures, including bagpipes, Scottish kilts, a Māori Haka from Mary’s family, and traditional Māori attire for Mary and her daughter Holly.
