Beloved Aussie actor and radio personality Monty Maizels has died aged 102.

Maizels, best known for his role as Jack in the iconic Aussie film The Castle, died at the end of March, with a funeral held in Victoria.

Working Dog, the production company behind the film, farewelled the actor with a tribute shared on Facebook.

“Farewell to the iconic Monty Maizels, who has passed away at the age of 102 and 3/4 years of age,” the tribute began.

“We know him best from our time making The Castle, where he played ‘Jack’, but he was a broadcaster, a producer, composer, writer, actor and so much more…

“Sending our love to Monty’s family and friends.”

Maizels was born in London on 26 June 1923, and moved to Australia in 1939, before scoring a job at 4BC as a panel operator.

In the 40s’ he began working with various broadcasters producing radio commercials and serials.

His first TV role came in the 70s, after volunteering as an actor for student film productions, before landing his role as Jack in The Castle.

Fans of the late actor also paid tribute to him, with one sharing about the “big impact” he had on them.

“Him telling me about the first time he heard tape after recording on metal discs. Being active in his 90’s. What an inspiration!”

“RIP Monty. My favourite person from “The Castle”. We often quote his simple but cathartic line,” another commented.

Maizels’ son John also shared a tribute to his father on the Broadcast website Radio info, recalling his father’s work across Australian media.

“While Monty always displayed exceptionally broad interests and capabilities, nobody ever doubted that his first love, and key skill, was language and words.

“He had three major loves in his life: music, words, and Frances – his wife of over 60 years.”

Maizels is survived by his three sons, John, Robin and Andrew, his four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
