Bonnie Tyler has been hospitalised after undergoing emergency surgery in Portugal.

The 74-year-old singer, best known for hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero, was admitted to hospital in Faro, where she owns a home.

A statement shared on her official website on May 6 confirmed the surgery had been successful.

“We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. The surgery went well and she is now recuperating,” the statement read.

“We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

Tyler first rose to fame in the 1970s with songs including Lost in France and It’s a Heartache.

She later became one of the defining voices of the 1980s, with Total Eclipse of the Heart remaining one of her most recognisable hits decades later.

The song has also become a cultural icon during major eclipse events around the world.

In a 2024 interview with Good Morning America, Tyler reflected on its enduring popularity.

“Every time the eclipse comes, everyone all over the world, they play Total Eclipse of the Heart and I never get tired of singing it,” she explained.

Across her career, Tyler became the first British female artist to debut at number one on the UK Albums Chart and remains the only Welsh artist to top the UK Singles Chart.
