Coles and Woolworths have quietly increased the price of their popular hot roast chickens, a staple meal for many Australian households.
The ready-to-eat chickens, which had been priced at $12.50 since November 2024, now cost $13 at both Coles and Woolworths.
It has been reported that the price rise happened earlier this month, before the current fuel shortage that is expected to place further pressure on grocery prices.
A Coles spokesperson said the decision followed rising costs across several parts of the supply chain.
“We know Coles Hot Roast Chickens are a go-to meal for many Aussie families offering a convenient, healthy and great-value meal solution,” the spokesperson told Nine.
“Any price increase is carefully considered and never taken lightly.
“Like many fresh food items, we’ve seen rising costs across farming, production, and transport.
“After reviewing these pressures closely, we’ve made the decision to adjust the price of our RSPCA Approved Coles Hot Roast Chicken from $12.50 to $13.
“This change helps us continue to support our suppliers and maintain the quality standards customers expect, while managing market pressures accordingly.
“We remain committed to delivering value for customers and will continue to review cost pressures carefully, lowering prices when possible or offering promotions wherever we can.”
Coles’ Hot Roast Chicken and Coke combo has also risen in price, increasing from $13.50 to $14.
The price change comes just one month after Coles ended a popular promotion that promised customers a free roast chicken if none were available in store.
The change was later confirmed by the supermarket after customers shared the news online.
Supermarkets in Australia sell about 90 million hot roast chickens each year, making them one of the most popular ready-made meal options.
Other supermarkets continue to offer similar products at different prices.
IGA recently ranked highest in Canstar Blue’s 2026 Most Satisfied Customer Award for their rotisserie chicken, which costs between $12.50 and $15, while Costco continues to sell its roast chickens for $7.99, but customers do need a paid membership to shop there.
