The TV world is mourning the loss of Mel Schilling, who has died aged 54 following a battle with colon cancer.

Schilling’s husband Gareth shared the devastating news on Tuesday night in an emotional statement posted to Instagram, describing the loss of his “soulmate” and an “incredible mum” to their daughter Madison, 10.

“Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love,” he wrote.

In a deeply personal tribute, Gareth revealed that even in her final moments, Schilling’s focus remained on her family.

“In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life,” he said.

“It took all of her remaining strength, and that gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly.

“Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me. This is a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42 – and nailed both.”

He praised her strength throughout her illness, saying she faced two years of chemotherapy with extraordinary courage.

“This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming,” he said.

“To most of you, she was Mel Schilling – matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”

Schilling was best known for her role as a relationship expert on Married At First Sight, where she became a central figure guiding couples through the show’s often turbulent “experiment”.

Her co-star John Aiken said he was “heartbroken, devastated and finding it hard to breathe” following the news.

“She came into my life 10 years ago and together we rode this (MAFS) juggernaut, being there for one another through it all,” he wrote.

“Nothing could prepare us for what lay ahead, but she was always in the foxhole with me.

“It was a privilege and an honour to sit beside her on the MAFS couch and watch her shine.

“She was warm, supportive and honest, and she deeply cared about all our participants.

“At her core she loved love.”

Tributes also poured in from the network behind the hit show, with Michael Healy, executive director of entertainment at Nine Network, describing Schilling as a “wonderful colleague and friend”.

“All of us at Nine are deeply saddened by the loss of Mel Schilling,” he said.

“She had a gift for connecting with people and helping them navigate life’s challenges.

“For years, she guided us through the complexities of the human heart with wisdom, honesty, and kindness.

“Mel was a big part of our family, and she will be greatly missed.”

Schilling first revealed her diagnosis in 2023 after experiencing severe stomach cramps. Initially thought to be a minor issue, further scans confirmed colon cancer.

Earlier this month, on March 12, she shared the heartbreaking update that the disease had spread and that doctors had told her there was nothing further they could do.

Her death marks the loss of one of Australian television’s most recognisable and compassionate figures – a woman remembered not only for her on-screen presence, but for her strength, warmth and unwavering devotion to her family.
