Australian music icon Molly Meldrum is facing renewed health challenges at age 83, prompting concern from fans and friends alike.
Longtime manager Mark Klemens told Woman’s Day that while Meldrum is “not as strong as he used to be”, he remains alive, comfortable, and in good spirits. “He hasn’t lost his razor-sharp wit, and he still has a drink. Life is just a lot quieter,” Klemens said.
Meldrum, the legendary host of Countdown, is being cared for at his Melbourne home by his partner, Yan Wangngam, and receives regular visits from close friends. Rumours about his declining health first surfaced in June 2024, when he missed the funeral of friend and Hey Hey It’s Saturday co-star John Blackman.
Concerns intensified later that year after photographs circulated showing Meldrum frail and resting at home, a stark contrast to his more energetic appearances, such as at the Australian Open ten months prior. One image shows the TV legend asleep on a couch without his signature hat, while another shows him lying on the verandah, a slender hand resting over his chest.
Close friends say Meldrum has largely withdrawn from public life, missing recent milestone events such as the 50th anniversary of Countdown. The show, which ran from 1974 to 1987, cemented Meldrum’s place as a guiding force in Australian music, and former announcer Gavin Wood described the milestone as a testament to Meldrum’s “enthusiasm and foresight”.
Meldrum has faced health struggles dating back to a near-fatal fall from a ladder in December 2011. In recent years, he has also attracted attention for public antics, including incidents at concerts in 2022 and 2023, which some observers linked to his declining wellbeing.
Despite the challenges, those close to Meldrum say he remains happy and cared for, enjoying quieter days surrounded by loved ones.
