For generations of Australians, Terence Donovan was one of the familiar faces who helped define local television. Now, the beloved actor, whose career stretched across more than six decades, has died peacefully in Melbourne at the age of 90.
Donovan’s death was announced by his sons, actor and singer Jason Donovan and Paul Donovan, who paid an emotional tribute to the man they described as both their father and best friend.
“He was larger than life. A huge character with a huge heart. He was our best friend, our hero and our world,” the family said, adding that he had passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
Born in London in 1935, Donovan moved to Australia as a teenager and built one of the country’s most recognisable acting careers. He first became a household name as Detective Mick Peters in the hit police drama Division 4 before starring as Vic Cameron in Cop Shop, cementing his place among Australian television’s great leading men.
His career also included memorable appearances in Breaker Morant, The Man from Snowy River, Prisoner, Sons and Daughters, A Country Practice, The Flying Doctors and Home and Away. But for many viewers, he will forever be remembered as Doug Willis on Neighbours, a role he first played in 1990 and returned to several times over the decades.
In one of Australian television’s most touching family legacies, Donovan shared the screen with both his son Jason and later his granddaughter Jemma Donovan in Neighbours, making the Ramsay Street saga a genuine three-generation affair.
Jason’s tribute reflected not only the loss of a celebrated performer, but of a devoted father.
“While our hearts are broken, we choose to celebrate his extraordinary life, his endless love, and the joy he brought to so many,” he wrote, thanking staff at Melbourne’s Cabrini Hospital for their care in his father’s final days.
For many Australians who grew up with Crawford Productions dramas, afternoon reruns and the golden era of Australian television, Donovan’s passing marks the end of another chapter. His performances helped shape the country’s television industry, while his warmth on and off screen ensured he remained a much-loved figure long after the cameras stopped rolling.
