A man has been arrested in Sydney’s eastern suburbs after allegedly pretending to shoot an imaginary weapon and re-enacting the mass-casualty Bondi terror attack on the now infamous bridge in Bondi, the same location where two gunmen allegedly killed 15 people in December.

The incident, which police say occurred about 7pm on Saturday, was brought to public attention on Wednesday by Sky News host Sharri Markson, who reported that two men had taken selfies on the bridge before mimicking gunfire and running along Campbell Parade shouting antisemitic abuse.

A friend of Markson’s is said to have witnessed the behaviour and contacted police immediately. Officers attended the scene and interviewed a 24-year-old man, while a second man fled before police arrived.

NSW Police later arrested a 22-year-old man at about 4.40pm on Wednesday in relation to the alleged re-enactment. In a statement, police said officers had been alerted that a man was mimicking “firing upon people near the bridge”.

“When challenged over his actions, police will allege the man verbally abused the bystanders, causing them to feel fearful and intimidated,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

According to police reports, the man, who will now face court, has been charged with “stalk intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (two counts) and behave in offensive manner in/near public place/school (three counts)”.

Investigations are continuing. Anyone with information about offensive or intimidating conduct is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
