Leading the pack with an unprecedented 16 nominations, Sinners, a Segregation-era thriller starring Michael B Jordan, has cemented its status as the premier contender for this year’s Academy Awards.
The haul positions the Warner Bros production as the frontrunner heading into the March 15 Oscars, where it will compete for best picture against One Battle After Another, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme and several other contenders.
The previous record for most nominations in a single year was 14, achieved by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land.
Other films nominated for this year’s best picture award include Bugonia, F1, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value and Train Dreams.
Jordan received a best actor nomination for his dual performance in Sinners, portraying twin brothers who set up a juke joint in 1930s Mississippi.
Additional nominations for the film include best director for Ryan Coogler, supporting actor for Delroy Lindo, supporting actress for Wunmi Mosaku, as well as nods for cinematography, costume design, original screenplay and visual effects.
Jordan will compete in the best actor category against Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, which secured 13 nominations and Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme.
In the best actress category, Jessie Buckley was nominated for Hamnet, alongside Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue.
Australia’s Rose Byrne also received a best actress nomination for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, following her recent Golden Globe win for the role.
Fellow Australian Jacob Elordi earned a nomination for best supporting actor for his portrayal of the monster in Frankenstein.
Oscar winners will be selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, whose voting body comprises approximately 10,000 actors, producers, directors and film craftspeople.
The ceremony will be broadcast by Walt Disney’s ABC, with comedian Conan O’Brien returning as host for a second consecutive year.
Warner Bros Discovery led all studios with a total of 30 nominations, as the company remains the subject of a bidding war involving Netflix and Paramount Skydance.
Netflix has never managed to snag an Oscar despite nominations for Roma, Emilia Perez and The Irishman,
But it has a chance this year with Frankenstein, which received nine nominations.
The streaming service releases its films in cinemas for a limited period to meet awards eligibility requirements.
