Paralympic bronze medallist and Australian record-holder Nicholas Hum has died aged 32.
Australian Athletics confirmed Hum’s death in a statement released on Tuesday, saying he passed away over the weekend.
Hum was one of Australia’s most accomplished long jumpers for more than a decade, highlighted by his bronze medal performance at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
His impact, however, extended beyond his competitive achievements.
“Nick was a much-loved member of our community and his loss is deeply felt. He was respected not only for his commitment to his sport but for the way he showed up for those around him,” Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth said in a statement.
“Our hearts are with Nick’s family, friends and teammates and we stand with them in remembering a life that meant so much to so many.”
Hum made his international debut in 2011 and went on to compete across three Paralympic Games and five World Para Athletics Championships.
The Melbourne-born athlete concluded his elite career at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, where he finished sixth in the T20 long jump event.
Hum holds the Australian record in the T20 long jump with a mark of 7.39 metres, set at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships.
He is survived by his wife, Mairead, and their three children, William, Holly and Paige.
Australian Athletics said it will continue to provide support to Hum’s family and those affected by his death.
