Australian tennis favourite and much-loved commentator Jelena Dokic has shared a heartening update after undergoing surgery to remove a large uterine fibroid, and she’s using the moment to encourage women to take charge of their health.

The former world No.4 told fans she’s recovering well after the successful procedure, reassuring supporters that while she’s “a bit sore from the four cuts” on her stomach and abdomen, everything went smoothly and she’s already on the mend. “I will be taking it slow for a bit but will be back up on my feet very soon,” she said.

Dokic, 42, said the experience opened her eyes to how many women under 50 are diagnosed with fibroids, and how easily symptoms can be dismissed. She urged women to listen to their bodies, prioritise regular scans and gynaecological check-ups, and to seek second opinions whenever necessary.

“Please get your scans… if anything ever feels off or painful please don’t dismiss it,” she said. “Always advocate for your health no matter what.”

Her message struck a chord, with hundreds of well-wishers – including Olympic champion Libby Trickett and Channel 7 presenter Erin Holland – sending love and support.

Dokic also expressed deep gratitude to the team at Frances Perry House at Melbourne’s Royal Women’s Hospital, praising the “incredible care” she received from doctors, nurses and staff. “You made me feel so comfortable and looked after and like I was in the safest hands,” she wrote. “Legends that don’t get enough credit.”

And in true Jelena style, she finished with a heartfelt thank you to her friends and loved ones who checked in, sent flowers and surrounded her with kindness.
