Authorities are investigating the death of a former police officer who was allegedly struck and killed by a car shortly after taking a photo of its licence plate in northern New South Wales.

Lisa Ward, 55, had been walking her dog near the showground on Coldstream Street in Ulmarra on Tuesday afternoon when she noticed a vehicle she had reportedly previously reported to police for reckless driving.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Ward had taken a photo of the vehicle moments before she was hit, with the driver allegedly fleeing the scene.

NSW Police confirmed a man had been taken into custody in relation to the incident.

“A man has been arrested following a fatal crash in the state’s north yesterday,” police said in a statement.

“About 4.50pm yesterday … emergency services were called to a showground.

“Officers attached to Coffs/Clarence Police District attended and were told a white 4WD had struck a pedestrian, before it was seen driving along Big River Way towards Grafton.

“NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a 55-year-old woman for serious injuries, however, she died at the scene.”

Police said a white 4WD was seized and a 50-year-old man was arrested in South Grafton on Wednesday morning. He has not yet been charged.

Ward is understood to have joined NSW Police later in life and retired a few years ago. Her son is currently a serving officer at Grafton Police Station.

Police are urging anyone with relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
