A former Miss Universe contestant has died in a freak accident after an elk smashed through the windshield of her car in Russia.
Kseniya Alexandrova, 30, who held the title of Vice-Miss Russia in 2017, suffered major brain injuries in a crash on July 5 in Tver Oblast, People reported, citing Russian media.
The model was in the passenger seat of a Porsche Panamera, driven by her husband, when the elk suddenly jumped onto the road.
“The elk flew into the car. The blow hit Ksyusha in the head. She was unconscious, her head was broken, everything was covered in blood,” her husband told Russian outlet RIA.
“From the moment it jumped out to the impact, a split second passed. I didn’t have time to do anything,” he said.
The animal’s legs went through the windshield of the low-to-the-ground sports car, shattering the front of Alexandrova’s skull, her husband explained.
Alexandrova’s husband additionally told a local news outlet that other drivers stopped to help, and emergency services arrived at the scene in about 15 minutes.
The model was taken to a hospital in Moscow and placed in a coma after the crash but died on August 15, more than a month later, her modelling agency confirmed.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you that our colleague and friend, model Kseniya Alexandrova, passed away yesterday evening,” the statement from her modelling agency read, according to People.
“Kseniya was bright [and] talented. She knew how to inspire, support and give warmth to everyone who was around. For us, she will forever remain a symbol of beauty, kindness and inner strength,” the agency continued.
“We sincerely mourn and express our deepest condolences to her family, friends and everyone who had the good fortune to know Kseniya.”
Alexandrova and her husband were newlyweds, having married just four months before the crash, according to her Instagram account.
Alexandrova competed in the Miss Universe 2017 pageant, in Las Vegas but did not place in the Top 16 semi-finalists.
