Popular rugby league and cricket commentator Andrew Moore has been hospitalised following a heart attack.
The ABC broadcaster underwent surgery and is now recovering in the intensive care unit at Westmead Hospital in Sydney.
Moore’s health scare was announced by his replacement, Brett Sprigg, ahead of Thursday night’s Panthers-Storm NRL broadcast.
“He actually sent us a message, his ABC rugby league colleagues, just this afternoon and he’s a bit knocked around, but in good spirits,” Sprigg said.
“I know, trust me, how much he hates missing the footy.”
From his hospital bed, Moore took a moment to thank fans for their support.
“I’ve been blown away (by) your messages … thank you so much,” he said.
“Tests and medications continue as we speak.
“Back to the footy.”
In a statement, the ABC shared that Moore wished to express his gratitude to the medical staff who treated him.
“We are saddened to share that our colleague and friend Andrew Moore has recently suffered a heart attack,” the ABC said.
“He has undergone surgery and is now recovering with his family.
“Andrew has asked us to pass on his gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff who have cared for him.
“All of us at ABC Sport are sending our love and best wishes to Andrew, and we can’t wait to hear his voice back in the commentary box when the time is right.
“Until then, mate, we’ve got things covered. Rest up and focus on getting well.”
Moore joined the ABC in 2015, having previously worked at 2GB.
“Andrew Moore is one of the most respected and loved broadcasters in the country,” ABC Sport content director Tim Verrall said.
“The ABC Sport team are enormously relieved that our valued colleague is getting the care he needs.
“We look forward to welcoming him back when he’s recovered and we send our thoughts to Andrew and his family.”
