Michael Flatley has shared the heartbreaking news that his wife of 20 years, Niamh O’Brien, has died at the age of just 52.

The Lord of the Dance star announced her death in an emotional tribute, describing Niamh as his “beautiful wife” and “best friend”.

“My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend,” the 68-year-old wrote.

“My gorgeous bride of twenty years has gone to the Lord in Heaven.

“She was the most loving mother, wife and person, and our lives will never be the same without her.”

Niamh died peacefully at Beacon Hospital in Dublin following a period of illness, according to a representative for the family.

Flatley shared a collection of treasured family photographs alongside his announcement, including images of Niamh dancing, a photograph from their wedding and a touching picture with their son, Michael St James.

“Thank you for all the love and kindness you have shown us,” Flatley continued.

“Please keep Niamh, Michael St James, and our family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Niamh was herself an accomplished Irish dancer, having competed at an elite level as a teenager before going on to perform professionally in productions including Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger.

She performed the lead role of Saoirse in Lord of the Dance and went on to marry Flatley in October 2006. Their only child, Michael St James, was born the following year.

Her death comes after Flatley had spoken movingly about the extraordinary support his wife gave him through his own serious health battles.

The dancing legend revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and undergone surgery. Recalling one particularly frightening period in hospital, Flatley later described waking to find Niamh beside him, smiling despite what she was going through herself.

He said her ability to remain strong for him showed remarkable courage, describing her as an “angel”.

Earlier this year, Flatley had spoken warmly about their approaching 20th wedding anniversary, revealing he was planning something special for Niamh and hoping the couple could renew their vows.

“I’m the luckiest guy in the world,” he said at the time, adding that he was blessed to be in love with a wife who loved him in return.

In a statement following Niamh’s death, the Flatley and O’Brien families said they were devastated by her sudden passing and asked for privacy as they came to terms with their loss.

They also thanked the doctors, nurses and staff at Beacon Hospital who cared for Niamh during her final weeks, as well as those who have reached out with messages of kindness and support.
