Kyle Sandilands has given a deeply personal update on his brain aneurysm, revealing that the condition has worsened and calling the situation “terrifying”.
In the latest episode of Building The Show on his Kyle Sandilands Live platform, cameras followed the 55-year-old as he finally attended an appointment he had been avoiding for months. Before going in, Sandilands admitted, “So, today’s the day I’ve been dreading,”
When he emerged from the doctor’s office, the news was not what he had hoped for. “Well, it’s grown a little bit, which isn’t great news,” he said.
Later, in a follow-up interview filmed at his desk in the studio, he explained that the aneurism had increased by 1mm. “So I come out of the doctor’s office and unfortunately the aneurism has gotten bigger, 1mm bigger,” he said. “Which seems small, but I didn’t want to get that, that wasn’t the thing I wanted to hear. I was hoping – and in my mind – I thought ‘I’ve got this, I’m gonna make it smaller,’ but it was bigger.
“Not big enough yet for them to operate, but not a good sign moving forward.”
The aneurysm was originally 4mm in size, meaning the 1mm change represents a 25 per cent increase. Even so, doctors are still not prepared to operate because, for now, trying to remove it is considered more dangerous than leaving it alone.
Sandilands said that when he was first diagnosed in early 2025, doctors told him the safest approach was to monitor it rather than intervene because surgery carried a stroke risk. Now, with the aneurism having grown, he said he feels surgery is likely unavoidable. “That is terrifying to me,” he added.
Reflecting on how he reached this point, Sandilands said, “A life of bad choices has probably led me here.” He also spoke candidly about his fears, saying, “I’m full of regret. I do not want to die and I do not want to be carved up.”
The episode briefly shifted in tone when his phone rang and his wife Teagan and son Otto were on the other end, offering a glimpse of his family life amid the sombre update.
Sandilands also spoke about the condition during his Tuesday morning show after newsreader Brooklyn Ross raised it. Ross encouraged him to stop smoking, which Sandilands resisted, sparking a wider argument across the studio.
He first disclosed the diagnosis on the former Kyle and Jackie O Show on KIIS in February 2025, sharing the news live on air. “On Friday, I was told by my medical team, which sounds like I’m already very sick, to have a medical team, that I have a brain aneurysm and it requires immediate attention, brain surgery,” he announced at the time.
He then added, “If you just tuned in to us after all these years, lap it up. And if you’re in Melbourne… you’re coming to the party too late. You may get your wish. I may be dead.”
At the time, Sandilands believed he would need surgery, but that has still not taken place, with doctors continuing to watch the aneurysm’s size. He also explained then that it was not a blockage. Instead, he described the blood vessel as being like a weak garden hose with a blister and a big bubble, with that bubble being the aneurysm.
