A Western Australian One Nation candidate has triggered backlash after making offensive remarks about gay people in a video shared on social media.

The comments came from Parminder Singh, who is number three on One Nation WA’s Legislative Council ticket. The clip was posted by Perth comedian and content creator Jasky Singh, better known as “Mr Sikkant’.

In the video, Mr Singh criticised gay pride events, arguing they “advertise” homosexuality to young people. He also claimed that women who enter relationships with women do not return to relationships with men.

“You no need to gay parade in city, you don’t need those type of parades,” Mr Singh said.

He continued, “I’m a man. Why I advertise, everyone know I am man. If they are gay, they are gay. Why they need to advertise”.

When asked how gay people parading affected him personally, Mr Singh said it was about influence on younger people.

“Because of advertising. And the effect on the young generation,” he said.

He then added: “What is that? Believe me, bro. As soon women try women, they never go to the man.:”

Asked whether he meant young women would “become lesbian,” Mr Singh said women would be pushed not to “go back” to men.

“They don’t go back because they think the man is using them,” he said.

Despite making those remarks, Mr Singh said he did not “care” and claimed he had no issue with gay people, while also opposing same sex marriage.

“I don’t care, But not advertise and not legalise their marriages.”

Same sex marriage was legalised in Australia in 2017.

Mr Singh also said people were not born gay and described homosexuality as a “mental illness.” Referring to animals, he argued they were smarter than humans because they were “not gay” and said human beings were on earth to create the “next generation”.

“Have you seen the male animal with the male animal? Female animal with the female animal?” he said.

“So we are worse than the animals. Animal don’t think much but they are better thinker than us.”

He also appeared to make comments about transgender people, referring to “one girl who put something on social media” about there being “three sex, male, female and mentally ill.”

When asked if he believed people were born gay, he replied, “No no, it’s a mental illness.,”

He added, “No one born anything … I blame on the parents because parents are too busy.”

According to the One Nation website, Mr Singh immigrated to WA with his wife and built a range of businesses in WA “through hard work and commitment”.

In a 2024 post on the ‘Pauline Hanson’s One Nation – Western Australia’ Facebook page featuring a video of Mr Singh, he is described as a “genuinely great person” who “like all of us at One Nation” believes in “equality – for all people, based on their character and needs, not their skin or background.”

Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson, who is himself a married gay man, said the remarks “remove all doubt” about Mr Singh’s character.

“One of the reasons I believe in free speech is because people like Parminder Singh speaks his mind and remove all doubt,” he said.

“He’s now said a bunch of patriotic Australians and his Party’s supporters are mentally ill, including his Party’s National Director.”

One Nation National Director James Ashby is a gay man.

“Mr Singh is clearly a bit of a snowflake who doesn’t like seeing other Australians happily living their lives,” Mr WIlson said.

“And also doesn’t believe in free speech nor bringing our country together.”
