The Australian athletics community continues to mourn the heartbreaking loss of rising sprint star Jemma Stapleton, whose life and legacy are being honoured in an emotional tribute at Melbourne’s iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The 25-year-old athlete dies last month while on a family holiday in Thailand, just weeks after celebrating her birthday, sending shockwaves through the sporting world. Stapleton has emerged as one of Australia’s brightest young sprinting talents, finishing third in the prestigious Stawell Gift in 2025 and returning to the final again this year.

This week, her memory is honoured in front of thousands, with a tribute played on the big screens at the MCG – a fitting farewell for an athlete whose life revolves around speed, dedication and an unmistakable passion for competition.

Family, friends and teammates have spoken of a young woman whose warmth off the track matches her determination on it. Her brother Joel described her as his “best friend”, saying her “bright smile” lights up every room she enters.

“For those that knew her, you know how lucky you were to have her in your life,” he said. “Her smile was so bright that wherever she went you knew she was there.”

Tributes continue to pour in from across Australia’s athletics community, with the Victorian Athletic League praising Stapleton’s character and the lasting impact she made in her short life.

While her death leaves an enormous void, the overwhelming support shown to her loved ones is also a reminder of how deeply one person can touch so many lives. A fundraiser established to support her family has raised more than $100,000 in less than a day – a powerful reflection of the affection and admiration she inspired.

Though her race has been cut heartbreakingly short, those who know Jemma say her spirit – fierce, joyful and full of promise – continues to run on in the hearts of everyone she inspires.
