Police are hunting three young riders after a reckless late-night e-bike stunt inside a Canberra shopping centre left a trail of damage behind.
The trio were caught on CCTV tearing through the South Point Shopping Centre in Greenway at about 8pm on June 15, riding two e-motorbikes at speed through the mall after hours. Footage shows one rider stopping to perform a burnout near the customer service desk, leaving heavy skid marks and damaging the floor.
ACT Policing has now released the vision in a bid to identify the youths, appealing for anyone who recognises them – or the bikes – to come forward. Officers admit the helmets make identification difficult, but hope distinctive clothing and the bikes themselves may help crack the case.
Police described the riders as teenage boys, with one seen wearing a blue vest over a black hoodie and a grey helmet featuring a red or pink marking. Another was dressed in dark clothing with black-and-white Nike shoes, while a third person riding pillion had light-coloured hair and shorts.
The incident adds to growing concerns around the misuse of e-bikes and e-scooters, with authorities across Australia grappling with how to regulate their use in public spaces.
