The Australian athletics community is in mourning following the tragic death of talented sprinter Jemma Stapleton while on an overseas family holiday.
Stapleton, who was widely admired both on and off the track, had established herself as one of the brightest competitors in professional athletics, earning national recognition through her performances at the prestigious Stawell Gift. She finished third in the famous Easter Monday race in 2025 and returned in 2026 to once again reach the semi-finals.
News of her sudden passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from family, friends and sporting organisations across the country.
A GoFundMe campaign established with the family’s approval to help bring Stapleton home and ease the financial burden of the tragedy attracted tens of thousands of dollars in support within hours. According to the fundraiser, she lost her life in an accident while overseas with her family.
The Victorian Athletic League paid tribute to Stapleton as a rising star whose impact extended well beyond her athletic achievements.
In a statement, the league said she was remembered as someone whose “presence, character and contribution left a lasting impact on those around her”.
Her former club, Knox Little Athletics, also expressed its heartbreak, describing Stapleton as a valued member of the community who displayed talent, determination and a genuine love of athletics from a young age. The club noted she progressed from local competition to representing Knox at state level, earning the admiration of teammates and coaches along the way.
Heartfelt tributes have also flowed from those closest to her.
Her partner, Tyler, shared an emotional message, writing that she was “the single greatest thing to happen” to him and expressing gratitude for the love they shared. Her brother Joel described her as both “the best sister” and his “best friend”.
Beyond her success on the track, Stapleton was remembered for her warmth, kindness and infectious enthusiasm. Friends and fellow athletes have spoken of a young woman who encouraged those around her and approached life with determination and generosity.
As tributes continue to pour in, many in the athletics world are reflecting on a life cut tragically short but one that left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
She was just 25 years old.
