Former world champion cyclist to face court over Olympian wife's death

Rohan Dennis, the husband of former Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins, will face court after allegedly causing her death.

Dennis, a former world champion cyclist, was arrested in January and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life.

It is alleged that he recklessly struck his wife with his car in front of their home in Medindie in Adelaide on December 30.

Hoskins was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital but died later that night.

The pair share two children together, and Dennis is due to appear at the Adelaide Magistrates Court today.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

The Australian cycling community were devastated when news of Hoskins' death first broke.

"Melissa described her team pursuit gold medal at the 2015 world championships as the highlight of her career but for the rest of us, the highlight was just having her around," AusCycling chief executive Marne Fechner said at the time.

"Although she retired in 2017, her presence as an alumnus of the sport has been felt and appreciated by many in the cycling and riding community."

Hoskins competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics as a member of the Australian track cycling team pursuit, that finished fourth place.

She also competed at the 2016 Olympics for the same team, and was in the squad that won the 2015 world title in the event.

The Olympian was laid to rest in her hometown, Perth, in January with a public memorial service held in Adelaide during what would've been her 33rd birthday a month later.

Dennis, who has been on bail since January, attended both ceremonies.

Images: Getty

Olympic icon announces split from husband

Leisel Jones has split from her husband of five years, Damon Martin.

The Australian olympic gold medallist announced the news live on-air yesterday afternoon on Triple M's Rush Hour with Leisel Jones, Liam and Dobbo.

"We have separated. It's incredibly sad news," Jones said during the broadcast.

She added that listeners would've probably noticed that something wasn't right as she hadn't mentioned Martin on air for months.

"I have the deepest respect for Damo. It's a very sad situation for both of us and a very hard decision to come to," she continued.

"I think it takes a lot of bravery and two grown ups to decide what's not right for them at a certain time and to realise that you are better off going separate ways."

Jones added that she is now "out in the wilderness on [her] own", but is doing relatively well despite the "very sad announcement".

"I'm actually OK. We had done a lot of work beforehand, we put a lot of effort in," Jones said.

"I'm conscious I am 38, I am now single, and I don't have any children and I might have missed that window, so that's a little frightening," the former elite swimmer continued.

"It's a really big adjustment to do things on your own. Damo is a such a wonderful guy, a great guy. We are both extremely heartbroken."

Jones and Martin met in 2016 and got engaged a year later before tying the knot in 2018.

Images: Instagram

"I can't wake Mummy up": Olympian dies at 43

A former Olympic swimmer has passed away suddenly at the age of 43 while on a trip with her family.

Helen Smart, a British swimming champion who competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, was found unresponsive by her four-year-old daughter Heidi when she tried to climb into bed with her parents.

Heidi then woke up her father Craig Smart, saying, "Daddy, I can't wake Mummy up," before Craig discovered his wife lying next to him dead.

Smart's mother confirmed the news of her passing, telling the MailOnline, "Heidi had woken up in the night and tried to get into bed with her. She said to her daddy, 'Mummy won't wake up''. He said, 'Oh, she must be very tired Heidi - you go back to bed'."

"He put the torch on and he said later that when he looked he could tell."

Linda continued, "We're distraught. They don't know what it is but they think it must have happened shortly after she went to bed. She just died in her sleep."

Just hours before her sudden passing, Helen and her family had been paddle boarding in the north of England, while on a trip for her brother Robert's 40th birthday.

Helen had not been suffering with any illnesses her family knew of.

Linda said, "At midnight, she went to bed telling me: 'I'll go to bed now mum as I know I'll be woken at 6am by Heidi. I just want to get some sleep in as I've had a long day.'"

Linda was then woken by Robert at 4am who said, "Mum, dad, you need to keep up - we think Helen's died."

Smart's father John said he and his wife "can't comprehend how she could simply go to sleep and not wake up."

Helen became a school principal after her retirement from swimming and was enjoying her new life.

Craig Smart took to her school's Facebook page to say his wife "loved the school, staff, children and parents so much."

"She was so proud to reach her goal of being Head Teacher," he continued. "She used to say to me all the time she could never see herself at another school. She was Worsley Mesnes through and through! I remember only last week she said her goal was to get the school to outstanding and that she had the right staff to achieve this!"

"I hope you all keep learning like champions. Please learn from this and live your best life, no regrets, take lots of photos, make memories and keep smiling just like Helen always did!" he added.

Image credits: Twitter / Getty Images

"Little bump in the road": Olympian shares joyous news

Australian swimming sensation Emily Seebohm and former reality TV star Ryan Gallagher have made quite the splash with their pregnancy announcement. In a video that had everyone saying, "Aw!" and reaching for their tissues (mostly to wipe away tears of laughter), Seebohm proudly displayed her baby bump while Gallagher mimicked her with his own not-so-impressive belly.

With Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" playing in the background, Seebohm, sporting an unbuttoned white shirt and jeans that were unbuttoned for extra effect, radiated joy as she embraced and smooched her soon-to-be baby daddy. Three-time Olympian rushed to hospital

Three-time Olympian Vicki Roycroft is in intensive care after suffering a suspected heart attack at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

It has been reported that the 70-year-old equestrian was preparing to participate in an equestrian show jumping competition when she suffered a heart attack and was rushed to Concord Hospital.

Vicki’s sister shared an update in the wake of the terrifying incident, informing Vicki’s friends and fans that she had endured a “large tear in her aorta” and according to eyewitnesses had not been breathing for 10 minutes. While she had been stabilised at that stage, she was also in the midst of an 8 hour bypass surgery with doctors who were “amazed with her fitness”, and it would be roughly 3-4 days until they knew exactly how much damage the former Olympian was facing.

The medical episode was confirmed by a spokesperson from the Easter Show, who told the Sydney Morning Herald that “the on-site St John Ambulance team attended to her immediately, with treatment also provided by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

“The thoughts of the entire Royal Agricultural Society of NSW and horse community at the show are with Vicki and her loved ones at this time.”

As news continued to break, support flowed in across Vicki’s social media account, with many also wishing the athlete a happy birthday, who had turned 70 while in hospital.

Alongside the well wishes came a further update from Vicki’s partner Neil Trickett, who shared with everyone that their beloved Vicki had had “a brief moment of semi-consciousness” and was “holding her own”.

He also reported “she did not squeeze a medical staff member's hand when asked, but maybe was lapsing back into unconsciousness. At this stage she will continue with heavy sedation until possibly tomorrow afternoon/evening, when a decision will be made on whether to allow her to begin to fully wake-up.”

Neil added that a full assessment would take place over the coming days to determine any potential neurological deficits Vicki may be facing, but that “Vicki's will and determination, not to mention the incredible medical professionals in whose care she remains, are what will get her through the next few days. That she survived due to a clot that was plugging the tear in her aorta is indeed miraculous.

“She is going to be utterly blown away by the good will that is spreading around the country - and around the world - when she wakes up.”

And for those worried about the future of Vicki’s career and passion for it, he had an optimistic answer, explaining “if that [the support] was all it took to get her back to full strength, she'd be riding tomorrow. It may take a little longer, but she WILL be back on the horse.”

Images: Getty, Shutterstock

The Klim Swim: Michael's next big challenge after devastating diagnosis

Australian swimming icon Michael Klim has refused to let his autoimmune disorder hold him back from the things he loves, returning to the gym to rebuild his body after his 2019 diagnosis.

The 45-year-old world record holder has chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) – a rare auto-immune disorder that targets the arms and legs, and the body’s nerves. And while things haven’t necessarily been easy for the swimmer, Michael’s positive attitude has assured supporters that big things are still to come for him.

“It has obviously been a challenging three or four years since the diagnosis,” he told the Sunrise team, “but I think I have accepted what I’ve got and I’m trying to make the most of it.

“I have a great support crew, obviously my family, my partner Michelle, and it does take more than one person to get through this, and it has been pretty challenging but I am upbeat and pretty positive.

A lot of people have come up to me and said ‘oh, you’re an Olympian, you’re mentally super tough’ but for me, the physical change has been so huge, it is hard to fathom,” Klim said.

“I can’t even stand on one leg at the moment, so it’s really basic ... understanding that, that is my norm, and I have to slowly build up from that.

“I am focusing on the things I can do rather than the things I can’t.”

And the item at the top of his ‘can do, will do’ list? Encouraging Australians to dive into their local pools (or favourite swimming spot) to take on the Brainwave Klim Swimming Challenge with him.

Michael has been hard at work training in preparation for the event that asks Australians to swim as much as they can during the month of March to raise funds for children with neurological conditions - like his own - and their families. Michael himself hopes to raise $300,000 for the foundation through his swim school franchise Klim Swim.

“No matter how far you choose to swim,” he wrote on Instagram about the challenge, “every stroke counts!”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Brainwave Australia (@brainwaveaus)

“For the month of March, we are encouraging everyone to have a swim. “Love the skin you are in”: Jana Pittman’s honest snaps prompt outpouring of love

Former Olympic athlete and mother-of-six Jana Pittman has taken to Instagram to share an important message on loving your body with her followers.

Jana’s post featured a length caption that was, in her words, “close to my heart”. In it, the 40-year-old was open and honest with her supporters about the impact of motherhood on her body, time, and the “emotional and stressful journey” she has been on over the course of the last year.

Alongside the caption came three pictures of Jana, clad in just her underwear and a glowing smile, in a series of poses. One sees her adopting the ‘Superwoman pose’, hands on her hips in a show of strength and power, and another sees her making a heart shape with her own stomach, in a sweet reflection of her “love the skin you are in” message.

“I wanted to share these photos because they speak volumes to me. This body used to be ripped and lean, racing for Aus against the world’s best,” Jana wrote.

“Fast forward 16 years, 6 kids later and this is where I am at. Yes this is the heaviest I have ever been, yes my body wears the beautiful scars of motherhood, especially the stretched skin from the twins at 39 years old but I am also heavy due to being so time poor!!

“Many of my posts show this tough and crazy woman managing so many different facets of life but the reality is I have had to make choices with my time and there has been very little left for me. The last 12 months have been an emotional and stressful journey on several fronts which resulted in comfort eating here and there... so I am now the same weight as when I was heavily pregnant!”

Jana went on to share her gratitude for her body and all that it's capable of, while admitting that it isn’t always so easy, telling fans “this is me right now and while I am not exactly comfortable, I am so grateful for this body. It has bravely taken me through so much and even though I don't always honour it, it honours me.

“Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Love the skin you are in.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jana Pittman (@janapittmanofficial)

The post - tagged with the likes of #bodypositive, #beproud, #postpregnancybody, #loveyourself, and #grateful - immediately resonated with Jana’s followers, with many opening up to her and each other about their own journeys with their bodies.

“This is an extremely important message and I myself have to remind myself what my body has done and created,” one wrote. “Love every stretch mark and dimple as this is the vessel that helped create and carry life.”

“Thank you so much for being so raw and beautiful. I don’t have time to get into shape, I’m time poor as back at work. Sleep is actually more important for me right now! Better quality sleep!” One told Jana, to which the Olympian replied, agreeing, that going back to work can be a big step with twins who wake during the night.

Australian swimmer Shayna Jack even joined the conversation, declaring Jana to be an “amazing inspiration.”

And fellow Olympian Anna Meares echoed the sentiment of Shayna and hundreds of others in the comments, writing, “you continue to amaze and inspire me!”

Images: Instagram

Australian Olympic champion convicted of theft

Australian Olympic champion and former diver Chantelle Newbery has been convicted of theft for stealing groceries from Woolworths.

Newbery, who won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, was caught walking out with $383 worth of unpaid groceries in Towoomba, Queensland, last July.

She later told the police that she had no food or money to pay for it, according to the Toowoomba Chronicle.

Newbery, now 45, has also pleaded guilty to driving on a suspended licence, on December 5, but was released on immediate parole after being jailed for eight months.

The reason why she wasn't jailed, according to Magistrate Kay Phillipson, was because at that time she was caring for her 18-month-old niece.

The Magistrate told her, “you really need to turn things around".

Newbery's solicitor Alysha Jacobsen told the court that the former diver had turned to drugs following her divorce from Robert Newbery.

After the divorce, she also faced the death of her new partner and her mother.

In 2014, she told Channel 9's A Current Affair that she resorted to drugs after her mother’s death.

She also said that she had been suffering from chronic depression and had tried to commit suicide multiple times.

“There have been times in the past few weeks especially around the time of the court case I knew I was slipping into a place where I was a little bit worried and I did actually go to a GP and get another referral to get help again,” she said.

In 2021, she was caught with an ice pipe after being stopped for shoplifting from Woolworths and Target, to which she pleaded guilty for stealing and possessing drug utensils.

Newbery was the first Australian Olympic diver to win gold in over 80 years at the 2004 Olympics.

She received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2005.

Image: Getty

If this article has raised issues for you, or if you’re concerned about someone you know, you can call these support services, 24 hours, 7 days:

Lifeline: 13 11 14

Suicide Call Back Service: 1300 659 467

Kids Helpline: 1800 551 800 (for people aged 5 to 25)

MensLine Australia: 1300 789 978

StandBy - Support After Suicide: 1300 727 24

Aussie speedster Steven Bradbury sells luxe apartment

Aussie Olympian Steven Bradbury has sold his beachside investment apartment in Queensland after holding onto it for over a decade.

The gold medallist skater listed the four-bedroom ground-floor apartment in the coastal suburb of Kings Beach in Caloundra earlier this year and has gone on to offload the flat for an undisclosed price.

After 11 years of owning the apartment, Bradbury initially listed the home for $2 million in May before agents Danelle Wiseman and Jonathan Pattinson of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate revised the price to $1.8 million, per The Sydney Morning Herald.

Even with the reduction, Bradbury’s potential earnings were more than double the amount his investment company, Pricefinder, paid in 2011.

Prior to its sale on August 16, the home was maintained as a weekender and rental with an asking price of $660 a week in rent.

Sitting just metres aware from the surf of King’s Beach, the 111-square-metre flat includes plenty of luxe amenities, such as its two courtyards - with one on each floor - timber herringbone hard floors in the living areas, and a large granite waterfall bench in the well-appointed kitchen.

The flat also has access to the amenities offered by the Kings Palazzo complex, including a pool and BBQ area shared with just 11 other apartments.

Bradbury, a four-time Olympian, shot to fame after his unlikely win at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, getting through the semi-final and earning gold in the final after his competitors all crashed in the final seconds.

Despite trailing behind them all, Bradbury was able to skate into first place, giving rise to the phrase “doing a Bradbury” for winning as an underdog.

Earlier this year, Bradbury took to Instagram to reflect on that fateful win 20 years later.

“I’ll always be seen as an overnight success, but it took me many years of sweat, tears and plenty of blood to get there and I’ll always appreciate those who helped me and backed me against the odds,” he wrote.

“Courage, belief, determination and a little luck, all helped me to be the original #lastmanstanding, and now it’s fantastic to see our next generation of @ausolympicteam legends taking our Winter Olympic Dream into the future!”

Images: @stevenbradburyofficial (Instagram) / Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate

US Olympic gold medallist jailed by Russian court

US Olympic gold medallist Brittney Griner has been charged with drug possession and smuggling, and sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison.

The 31-year-old basketball champion listened to the judge's verdict with a blank expression as an interpreter translated the ruling by Judge Anna Sotnikova, with her lawyers later saying she was "very upset."

Griner also was fined 1 million rubles, or approximately $23,110.

Brittney pled guilty to the charges, but admitted she "had no intention of breaking Russian law", as she explained that she accidentally packed the cannabis vape canisters in haste before her flight.

US President Joe Biden denounced Brittney's verdict and sentence as "unacceptable", which came amid soaring tensions between the US and Russia over the ongoing war in Ukraine.

"I call on Russia to release her immediately so she can be with her wife, loved ones, friends, and teammates," Biden said, adding that he would continue to work to bring home Griner and Paul Whelan, an American imprisoned in Russia on an espionage conviction.

Griner, who is recognised as one of the greatest players in WNBA history, has been detained in Russia since February 17 after police said they found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage upon landing at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport.

She was returning to Russia, where she has competed since 2014.

Defence attorney Maria Blagovolina told reporters later that Griner was "very upset, very stressed"

"She can hardly talk. It's a difficult time for her," the lawyer said.

Griner's agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas tweeted that the sentence "was severe by Russian legal standards and goes to prove what we have known all along, that Brittney is being used as a political pawn".

She added that she supported Biden's efforts "to get a deal done" to get Brittney sent home to the US.

Second Olympian killed in same town

A second athlete has been killed in the same town that another Olympian was killed in just a year ago.

Kenyan born Damaris Muthee Mutua was found in the town of Iten in western Kenya on Tuesday, the same town record-breaking distance runner Agnes Tirop was found dead in.

Police have launched a manhunt for Mutua’s Ethopian boyfriend who is believed to have been the last person to see her.

“According to Mutua’s immediate neighbour, her boyfriend was seen in the house on Sunday morning. It’s likely that the incident happened late Saturday or early Sunday since the body was in a state of decomposition,” county police chief Tom Makori told AFP.

“We have launched a manhunt for the Ethiopian who is believed to have fled the country.”

The 28-year-old was a junior athlete and two times bronze medalist at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore and the East African junior athletics championships in Khartoum, Sudan before deciding to represent Bahrain.

Her story is similar to Tirop who was only 25 when she was found with stab wounds in her abdomen and her husband missing in October last year.

Athletics Kenya said the country had “lost a jewel who was one of the fastest-rising athletics giants on the international stage, thanks to her eye-catching performances.”

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta also paid tribute at the time, saying, “It is unsettling, utterly unfortunate and very sad that we’ve lost a young and promising athlete who, at a young age of 25 years, she had brought our country so much glory through her exploits on the global athletics stage including in this year’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics where she was part of the Kenyan team in Japan.”

Image: Twitter

Olympic legend delivers his own eulogy

Mourners were brought to tears during the emotional funeral for Australian Olympic legend Dean Woods, who delivered his own eulogy.

The track cyclist died in early March after a long battle with lung cancer at 55 years old.

Knowing his fate, the sportsman and father decided to address his wife and children, along with the congregation at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre, in a pre-recorded message while wearing the same suit he was to be buried in.

His wife and three kids has not previously seen the video before it was shown at the funeral, resulting in emotional scenes for the family.

"I'm well prepared, even though I'm in the box in front of you," he said.

"This will be the suit I'll be put in the box in. (I've) even got the torch ... in there just in case it gets dark."

"Now for me, to say to Meagan and the kids that I'm going out for a two hour ride, and not coming back - now that's a tragedy."

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Dean's widow Meagan said her and her kids were "devastated".

She said, "We're going home tomorrow and I think that's when the reality will hit. Especially for myself and the girls, because we have had such a wonderful distraction."

"I think once we get back home and into the swing of things, the silence will be deafening."

Dean's service began with footage of Woods and his teammates clinching gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and ended with a tribute from Meagan, his wife of 28 years.

Extract of Dean Woods' eulogy

"Hello ladies and gentlemen … it's a bit of a sad occasion.

I've had a pretty extraordinary life, it's pretty hard for anyone to document that in a simple form, so the best person to do it is me.

First of all, today is a sad day, but for me this is just my process with the whole cancer deal.

It's not a tragedy, and I saw that for the reason I've spent so much time riding my bike throughout the world, had a lot of near misses, but never had any serious accidents.

Now for me, to say to Meagan and the kids that I'm going out for a two hour ride, and not coming back – now that's a tragedy, because everything was fine.

I've been fortunate enough, and I do say fortunate enough, to be able to have the time to put a few things in place, to get a few things sorted.

Even though, two years ago when I was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer … So the main issue was in the lungs.

Which, when you consider someone who's spent 40 years with their lungs in their profession keeping you fit and healthy, it's just one of those things.

But I've never once and never will say: 'Why me? Why me?'

It's not who I am, and it's not the way to deal with it.

It's like if I won 50 billion in the Lotto, would I be saying: 'Why me? Why me?'

Absolutely not. So you take the goods with the bads. And that's what I've been able to do.

I owe a massive amount of what I know to high performance sport.

I've been fortunate enough to be able to put myself through many arduous situations.

And you still have that commitment to keep going.

There's never that moment you want to stop, even though it does creep in, but you know there's an end goal.

And the end goal is to keep going and push through.

So even from a young age I've been very fortunate to have those experiences which have served me really well in my two terms of cancer."
