Nine-year-old Hamas hostage believed dead is reunited with her father

Dozens of hostages are recovering after being freed from their captors, after a temporary truce between Israel and Hamas came into effect.

Almost eight weeks of violence came to a halt as the truce began, with Hamas so far releasing 41 hostages in the first two days of the truce.

Among those who were freed by the radical Palestinian group was nine-year-old Emily Hand, who's father thought she was dead.

When Emily was at a sleepover on October 7th, the neighbourhood was bombed and her father Thomas, was told his daughter had died.

Now, Thomas and Emily have been reunited, with their emotional reunion just one of many as families across Israel saw the return of their loved ones.

Also released by Hamas was four-year-old Abigail Edan, an American-Israeli dual citizen who was abducted by Hamas almost eight weeks ago.

US President Joe Biden commented on Abigail's release, saying she has been through "the unthinkable", as the four-year-old saw her mother get killed, before her father was also killed as he tried to shield her from the bombings.

Biden said Abigail is receiving love, care and “the supportive services she needs” and adding he hoped “this is not the end of the temporary truce”.

“What she endured was unthinkable. She has been through a terrible trauma,” he said.

All 41 hostages released by Hamas from captivity in Gaza are stable, according to local medical professionals.

The truce between Israel and Hamas came into effect on Friday morning, marking the end of seven weeks of constant fighting since the bombing of southern Israel on October 7th.

The four-day pause is expected to see the exchange of 150 Palestinian women and children imprisoned in Israeli jails for 50 women and children hostages held by Hamas.

Israeli officials, while adamant that the truce is not an end to the war, have also agreed to pause fighting for an additional day for every further 10 captives freed by Hamas.

Tracy Grimshaw’s rumoured TV return

Tracy Grimshaw is rumoured to return to TV less than a year after her A Current Affair exit, with a "secret project" in the works with Nine, according to an insider.

The veteran presenter reportedly made a low-key entrance into the Nine offices earlier this month to meet up with their bosses and pitch some new ideas.

"They were very surprised to hear from her but excited to see what she'd been working on," the insider told Woman's Day, and added that at least one of the ideas she pitched is already in the works.

"Tracy could be back on our screens as early as 2024!" the insider said.

The TV star’s change of mind is reportedly inspired by Ally Langdon's flourishing career as the new host of A Current Affair.

"Tracy is telling friends she may have made a big mistake. She has so much time on her hands and has been watching Ally flourish, and it's made her miss the thrill of TV."

"She's started to think that maybe she isn't done after all, and she knows Nine will always welcome her back, in whichever capacity she chooses,” the insider revealed.

Ally Langdon was one of the front-runners to replace Grimshaw among other contenders including Carrie Bickmore, Deborah Knight, and Sylvia Jeffreys.

Langdon has proven that she is a worthy replacement after bringing in 1.1 million viewers in the final week of ratings season, which is 30,000 more than when Grimshaw was hosting.

Image: Getty

“Let him rest in peace”: Viewers slam Shane Warne miniseries

Viewers have slammed Channel Nine’s upcoming miniseries on Shane Warne, calling the “major drama” two-part event “embarrassing and disgraceful”.

The first promo ads for the miniseries aired during the first State of Origin game on Wednesday night, with the trailer showing actor Alex William depicting the late Australian cricketer.

The trailer was not well received by fans, with many saying it is “too soon” to be making a series about his life and death.

Warmie died in March 2022 of a suspected heart attack while on holiday in Thailand.

Just six months after his passing, the Nine Network confirmed the miniseries was in production, however, they did not disclose at the time that production began just three weeks after his death.

The series, called Warnie, is set to air over two nights later this year.

After the first trailer aired, many fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment over the show.

One disgruntled viewer wrote, “Are Channel Nine taking the piss with the Warnie mini series. That promo was s***house, embarrassing and disgraceful. Let him rest in peace.”

Another wrote, “Does anyone else think it’s too soon for a Warnie show on? He hasn’t even been gone for 15 months, and already the show seems filmed and ready to release.”

“How quickly after his passing did someone go ‘yep it’s time to make a show on his life?’”

A third person put it simply: “On the YeahNah scale the Warnie TV drama series look like a massive nah.”

The miniseries was filmed in the late cricketer's hometown of Melbourne, and tells a dramatised version of Warnie's remarkable sporting career and rise to fame.

Shane's eldest daughter Brooke, 24, previously called Nine's announcement of a telemovie based on her father “beyond disrespectful”, as he spent 23 years as a commentator for the network's cricket coverage.

“Do any of you have any respect for dad? Or his family?” she wrote on Instagram.

“He did so much for Channel Nine and now you want to dramatise his life and our family's life six months after he passed away? You are beyond disrespectful.”

Channel Nine addresses rumours of "tension" on Today set

Channel Nine has addressed rumours of tension and anxiety on the set of Today, with the relationship between hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo reportedly being strained.

According to reports to New Idea, Stefanovic and Abo have been at odds over a reported $700,000 pay gap, with Karl reportedly earning $1.5million a year for his hosting duties while Abo brings home $800,000 a year.

Despite the rumours of "tension" over the six-figure pay gap, Nine's director of morning television Steven Burling told news.com.au that the rumours are "not even remotely correct".

"The salary figures for our network talent published last week in various outlets were not even remotely correct. Anyone who watches Today can confirm there's absolutely no tension on set," Mr Burling said.

"We couldn't be happier with our talented line-up of Karl, Sarah, Brooke, Alex and Tim who are working well and having a great time - end of story."

The statement comes after New Idea spoke to a source allegedly close to the show, who said the news of the pay gap was "anxiety inducing" for new host Sarah, who took over from Ally Langdon in January.

"The news of Karl's big pay cheque is anxiety inducing to say the least... Some are wondering why she isn't being more equally matched with Karl," a source allegedly said.

"If you were Sarah would you stay and put on a smile every day knowing full well you're being paid so much less than your male counterpart for doing the same job? I can imagine she's likely disappointed."

Richard Wilkins' heartbreaking interview regret

Richard Wilkins has revealed the one heartbreaking question he wished he had asked Charlotte Dawson the day before her passing.

In a recent interview for his series Dickie's Diaries the usually upbeat Nine Entertainment reporter sat in a moment of silence before he answered the interviewer’s question: What’s the one question you wished you’d asked?

"The one question I wish I'd asked was to my friend," Wilkins began, repeating the question, pausing briefly before saying her name "Charlotte Dawson".

"Charlotte used to come on the Today show a lot.

"She always used to come into my dressing room at the old Channel Nine studios in Sydney. We'd always have a good old chat about stuff,” he said.

He shared the conversation they had in February 2014 and the moment that has weighed on his mind since.

"She said 'what are you doing on the weekend' and I said 'I'm going up to see Bruce Springsteen play in the Hunter Valley. It's going to be fantastic', I said. 'I can't wait to get up there',"

"Charlotte took her life the next day which still makes my... shivers go up my spine... I had a spare ticket and I wish I'd said to her 'do you want to come?'

"You just wonder whether, had she got out of the space she was in, taken a leap of faith, maybe things would have turned out differently."

The New Zealand-Australian model and TV personality was found dead in her home in Woolloomooloo on February 22, 2014.

Dawson had depression for over a decade and was only 47 when she passed. She had opened up about her struggle in an interview in 2012.

"When you work in a public environment like the media, you do have to have a thick skin," she said.

"And no matter what you do, people are still going to hate you just because they think you're ugly or because they don't like the sound of your voice."

Images: Getty/ Nine Entertainment

Don't go it alone. Belinda Russell lifts the lid on “disappointing” Weekend Today departure

Belinda Russell stunned Weekend Today audiences early in 2023 when she made the unexpected announcement that she would be parting ways with the Nine breakfast programme.

Taking to social media in March, Russell thanked her supporters, shared her hope that she’d “brought some sunshine and joy” to their screens, and expressed her excitement for the opportunity that lay ahead.

A month later, Clint Stanaway and Jayne Azzopardi joined Weekend Today as co-hosts.

And now, Russell has spoken up about her surprise departure, suggesting in an interview with Stellar that the decision for her to leave hadn’t been one she’d seen coming, either.

“It wasn’t the start to 2023 that I was expecting, and that was disappointing,” she confessed. “It’s going to be a bit of a knock to your confidence and self-esteem but you do then think ‘well, what’s next?’

“You’ve got to trust the universe and back yourself.”

But rather than dwell on the negative side of her situation, Russell is determined to focus on the benefits, primarily what it means for herself and her three young daughters - 16-year-old Maddi, 13-year-old Tallulah, and 11-year-old Coco.

“You have setbacks in life, but it’s how you bounce back that matters,” she explained. “[It’s good] for my girls to see that and learn about resilience.”

Russell made note as well of how she hadn’t quite understood “how powerful it can be bringing a bit of hope and joy and brightening someone’s day” until someone approached her at an event and thanked Russell for getting her through Covid.

And it’s those takes that the 44-year-old brings to her ongoing work at Nine, with Russell adding that “TV is so subjective. One person might think something but then a million others might disagree. That’s the way the cookie crumbles and I’m not going to cry about it.

“It is what it is, but what’s next?”

When it comes to the future, Russell is keeping her options - and her eyes - open, explaining to Stellar that if an opportunity arose to host something in the realm of entertainment, “to have fun and explore that zest for life”, then she’d be prepared to give it a go.

And that she isn’t keeping her options limited to just television, either.

“I work at Channel Nine and for Channel Nine, but I don’t think any particular role belongs to me,” she revealed. “You hope your ability means you’re put in roles that you can shine in, but my eyes are wide open.

“If I don’t work in the TV industry any more or I leave Channel Nine, life is still going to be good.”

Images: Instagram

Today shakes things up for the weekend

The Nine Network has revealed that Jayne Azzopardi and Clint Stanaway will be joining the dedicated team of Weekend Today, alongside news presenter Sophie Walsh.

And in celebration of their new gig, the two spoke to 9Entertainment, with Stanaway sharing the team’s excitement and desire to bring a fresh experience to the show, keeping viewers entertained and informed along the way.

"We're good listeners,” he explained, “and I'm really excited to sort of showcase people's stories. There's no doubt, I think both of us, and including Sophie, we want to bring a relaxed sort of vibe to the show and have some fun, but as well as keeping people entertained, we know we have a responsibility to keep people informed as well."

And as Azzopardi added, “during the week, everybody's so rushed, trying to get the kids off to school and get out the door to work. On the weekend everything happens at a little bit of a slower pace.

"So you can have us on the TV while you're eating breakfast and having your coffee and there'll be interesting conversations, and also maybe helping you make sense of things that have happened during the week that you've heard about, but you haven't really had a chance to read a lot about it because it's too busy."

Azzopardi went on to note that working with Clint has “just been so easy”, and that they know they have each other’s support, as well as being able to “trust each other to be able to do our jobs properly, and all actually really, really like each other.”

"I'm a sports veteran, Jayne's all about politics, and I love Sophie's cheek and humour,” Stanaway noted of their team dynamic.

"And we're all from different parts of the country. I'm unashamedly a Melbourne guy, Jayne's from the Sydney shire, and Sophie's a Queenslander at heart, and I love that about us. And I think that's really showcased on our show.”

He added that they had also known each other for “a long time as colleagues”.

The difference in their career history - Stanaway reporting on sports, Jayne covering finance and politics - is likely to be the backbone of their success for the breakfast TV programme, with its variety in coverage across the realms of news and current affairs, weather, politics, lifestyle, and entertainment. And as Stanaway put it, “Jayne's the sensible one. She started out in finance. Right there is the contrast between us.”

But they won’t be the only ones contributing to their broadcasts, with Azzopardi making sure to recognise everyone behind the scenes too, noting that “we've got fantastic producers and they work so hard and keep us on our toes. They pull us up if we're talking for a bit too long and keep things running to time."

Stanaway then took the opportunity to point out, “because when we get started we can be hard to shut up!"

Images: Today / Nine

The purrfect passenger gives the fright of his nine lives

Some people are braver than others. And the same, apparently, can be said for cats.

Onboard a flight from Canada’s Ontario International Airport to the USA’s JFK, one feline friend turned heads when he was caught prowling down the aisle, thousands of feet in the air.

Columnist Yi Shun Lai was one of the passengers who caught sight of the apparent stowaway, and took to Twitter to share an image of the cat being held by a member of the flight crew, along with the caption “On last night's @JetBlue flight, ONT-JFK: 'Is anyone missing a CAT. A grey-and-white CAT.' Yes I woke up for this.”

As the post blew up across social media, she noted later that the cat had been declared as “HEAVY”, while people in her comments begged for further updates.

“Was the cat's owner found? Did it get trapped in a suitcase? Does a Canadian cat who stowed away need a visa now? I'M INVESTED IN THE OUTCOME HERE!!” declared one.

“And I would have got[ten] away with it, too, if it wasn't for you meddling cabin crew,” joked another.

“That is a giant version of my cat,” shared yet another follower. “How did she get hit by a growth ray and end up on a plane to JFK?”

Meanwhile, one had a suggestion that many seemed to agree with, writing, “we must claim the cat!!! And name him Baggage!”

And Cats with Jobs had something very, very important to share with everyone, telling them to “put him down, he’s the pilot.”

On last night’s @JetBlue flight, ONT-JFK: “Is anyone missing a CAT. He was also, most importantly, home “safe and sound” after his big day out in the sky.

The jokes kept rolling in from there, as well as one who spoke for everyone when he said “somehow, Brian seems like the perfect name for this dude.”

But for others, they just wanted more information on how he was doing, and how exactly he’d managed to get himself out of his carrier like they’d said.

“He’s doing great!” his owner, Alexis, shared with her followers. “My partner & I travel with him in a cat-backpack and the bottom flap isn’t very secure. So Brian … must’ve nudged it open while we were asleep.”

Yi Shun then commented, “at first we wondered if Brian weren't doped up on Benadryl; his expression seemed to be so over-it-all, but then it turns out no, this is Brian all the time.”

And Alexis was all too happy to confirm this, telling everyone that “this is his attitude at all times. Fussy, over it, and refusing to be ignored.”

That’s our big boy Brian! Thank you for all the love, he’s safe & sound but definitely not sorry haha pic.twitter.com/GDg3Bwzv4p

— Alexis (@prof_goddess) March 18, 2023

Images: Twitter

Why Channel 7 is happy that Ally Langdon left her role on The Today Show

Channel 7 is secretly happy at the changes their competition Channel 9 has done to the breakfast show.

The broadcaster announced that Ally Langdon will leave her role on The Today Show to replace Tracy Grimshaw as host of A Current Affair.

60 Minutes reporter Sarah Abo will take over Ally’s place next to Karl Stefanovic in the new year.

But now insiders are saying that this change will see Channel 7 continue to beat Channel 9 in the breakfast TV show ratings.

“They’ve weakened their position in the real battleground. Anyone can host A Current Affair, but breakfast TV is a different game,” a Seven insider told Diary.

However, this is not the case from Channel 9’s perspective because of veteran Sunrise reporter David “Kochie” Koch limiting his workload in the new year.

Earlier this year, it was unclear whether or not Kochie will remain the face of Sunrise alongside Nat Barr.

But he was able to successfully negotiate more flexibility to spend more time with his family.

“After 20 years, I've felt I needed more flexibility in my life with my wife Libby and my business interests,” he told The Australian in October.

“So when I mentioned leaving to Seven, (CEO) James (Warburton) very kindly asked me whether we could work together on a plan that I wanted, which also kept my connection to the network and my focus on Sunrise.”

His decision is the only comfort that Channel 9 have at winning the breakfast show ratings after a very long time.

“Kochie leaving marks a huge opportunity for Today - there is no denying that,” a Nine insider said.

“He is a breakfast TV behemoth. He has underpinned Sunrise's dominance for two decades.

“The idea of a breakfast TV landscape without him gives Today clear air for the first time in 20 years and there is a real sense of opportunity here.

“It means Karl will now be the most senior presence on either show... and that could resonate with viewers.”

Image: Instagram

Nine things you don't know about cruises

A favourite mode of voyage for a long time, here are some fun facts you might not have heard of before about cruising.

1.Delighted doggy
Some cruise liners have kennels on board. That’s right — you can ship your pets over the high seas with you.

2.Money bags
A single day visit by a major ship can pump up to $1 million into a port city as thousands of passengers and crew take tours, eat and buy souvenirs.

3. Blind dating
Cruise lines like Azamara, Crystal, Oceania and Silversea, are bringing back the “Love Boat”. Aboard all four of these cruise lines, gentlemen hosts are ready to sweep women cruising solo off their feet during an elegant evening of drinks, dining and dancing. The Gentleman Host program pairs independent female travelers with dashing companions who can take the lead on the Foxtrot and carry on witty, charming conversation.

4. Friends of Bill W.
Alcoholics Anonymous holds meetings on board under the title “Friends of Bill W” meeting. Initially concerned with how other passengers would feel about AA meetings taking place on board, cruise ships announced the meetings as Friends of Bill W.

5. Park view
Some of the most decadent ships are decked out with parks. The Celebrity Solstice, based in Australia during the summer cruise season, has a rooftop deck featuring more than half an acre of live lawn. Fun fact: there is so much lawn that it requires permission from quarantine officials to dock in Australia.

6. Girl power
No woman had captained a major cruise ship until 2007, when Karin Stahre Janson from Sweden took charge of the Monarch of the Seas.

7. Ahoy matey
River cruise ships on busy waterways, like the Nile, often have to tie up abreast of each other, giving guests a sticky beak into other ships as they walk through adjoining ships to reach the dock.

8. Cookie, anyone?
To the delight of many, Princess ships serve cookies and milk at around 3 or 3.30am on the pool deck and in the Piazza.

9. Shoestring tours
If you book your shore tours privately, as opposed to through the cruise line, you can save money. While many cruisers worry that if they book excursions on their own they lose the guarantee that the cruise line offers for returning to the ship on time, some private booking companies actually make the same guarantee too.

Image: Getty Images
