New development in search for Samantha Murphy

Police have called in more than a dozen detectives from specialist units to assist the investigation into the disappearance of Samantha Murphy 18 days after she went missing.

The mother-of-three was last seen leaving her Ballarat East home to go on her usual morning run in nearby bushland at around 7am on February 4.

Now, The Missing Persons Squad, who is leading the investigation has been expanded to include detectives from the Counter Terrorism Command and Crime Command units.

The detectives from these specialist units are “highly skilled” selected for their “experience in complex and protracted investigations”.

Police have also clarified that the extra detectives have travelled to Ballarat because of their skills and experience rather than a terror or sex crime link.

“We have not taken counter terrorism detectives because we think her disappearance is terrorism related,” police told the Herald Sun.

Local community members are also doing whatever they can to help, and are conducting their own searches.

The group of volunteers are all working together to find "any answers, any solution, any hints, any evidence that might be able to contribute towards bringing Sam home," local Cristie-Lea King told A Current Affair on Wednesday night.

On Wednesday, community-members also banded together to fly in an experienced bush tracker to help them and share his expertise ahead of the community-led search on Saturday.

“I’m hoping to get a lot done while I’m here,” he told 7News at the time.

“I plan on training up some locals in the fundamentals of tracking, so when I leave I can continue to liaise with those on the ground."

“People are entitled to their opinions as to whether or not Samantha is out in the bush.

“On the chance that she is, I want to ensure that absolutely everything is done to find her.”

Images: Victoria Police

New Woolies CEO's huge salary revealed

Woolworths have announced their new CEO, just hours after Brad Banducci shared the news of his retirement.

After almost nine years at the helm, Banducci is stepping down after a trainwreck interview with ABC’s Four Corners, and while still facing backlash over the decision to not stock Australia Day merchandise.

Now, his replacement has been announced, with Amanda Bardwell set to step into the role in September.

Ms Bardwell was appointed to the role following an “extensive international search process”, which Woolworths Group Chair, Scott Perkins said was supported by external consultants.

“We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Amanda as the incoming and 13th Managing Director and Group CEO of Woolworths Group, as the Group starts its next century of creating better experiences together for a better tomorrow,” Mr Perkins said in a statement.

When Ms Bardwell steps into the role, she is set to receive a generous pay packet of $2.15 million, as well as additional generous bonus incentives.

While this number seems extravagant, it pales in comparison with the $7.65 million Banducci took home last year.

Mr Banducci’s pay was even higher in 2022, with a take home pay of $8.37 million, but money was knocked off from his short term bonuses, after the discovery that there was nearly $600 million in underpayments across Woolworths’ payroll going back years.

The revelation of his extortionate pay packet in the wake of his resignation has angered many, with social media users airing their grievances over his salary, given that many Aussies continue to struggle to keep up with the rising costs of supermarkets as the cost of living crisis continues.

Mr Banducci’s retirement was announced in a statement to the ASX on Wednesday morning, with the former boss saying it has been a “privilege” to be a member of the Woolworths team and one he has “never taken for granted”.

A spokesman for Woolworths said Mr Banducci’s retirement announcement was not connected in any way to the recent Four Corners interview.

Out of the rabbit hole: new research shows people can change their minds about conspiracy theories

Matt Williams, Massey University; John Kerr, University of Otago, and Mathew Marques, La Trobe University

Many people believe at least one conspiracy theory. And that isn’t necessarily a bad thing – conspiracies do happen.

To take just one example, the CIA really did engage in illegal experiments in the 1950s to identify drugs and procedures that might produce confessions from captured spies.

However, many conspiracy theories are not supported by evidence, yet still attract believers.

For example, in a previous study, we found about 7% of New Zealanders and Australians agreed with the theory that visible trails behind aircraft are “chemtrails” of chemical agents sprayed as part of a secret government program. That’s despite the theory being roundly rejected by the scientific community.

The fact that conspiracy theories attract believers despite a lack of credible evidence remains a puzzle for researchers in psychology and other academic disciplines.

Indeed, there has been a great deal of research on conspiracy theories published in the past few years. We now know more about how many people believe them, as well as the psychological and political factors that correlate with that belief.

But we know much less about how often people change their minds. Do they do so frequently, or do they to stick tenaciously to their beliefs, regardless of what evidence they come across?

From 9/11 to COVID

We set out to answer this question using a longitudinal survey. We recruited 498 Australians and New Zealanders (using the Prolific website, which recruits people to take part in paid research).

Each month from March to September 2021, we presented our sample group with a survey, including ten conspiracy theories, and asked them how much they agreed with each one.

All of these theories related to claims about events that are either ongoing, or occurred this millennium: the September 11 attacks, the rollout of 5G telecommunications technology, and COVID-19, among others.

While there were definitely some believers in our sample, most participants disagreed with each of the theories.

The most popular theory was that “pharmaceutical companies (‘Big Pharma’) have suppressed a cure for cancer to protect their profits”. Some 18% of the sample group agreed when first asked.

The least popular was the theory that “COVID-19 ‘vaccines’ contain microchips to monitor and control people”. Only 2% agreed.

Conspiracy beliefs probably aren’t increasing

Despite contemporary concerns about a “pandemic of misinformation” or “infodemic”, we found no evidence that individual beliefs in conspiracy theories increased on average over time.

This was despite our data collection happening during the tumultuous second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdowns were still happening occasionally in both Australia and New Zealand, and anti-government sentiment was building.

While we only tracked participants for six months, other studies over much longer time frames have also found little evidence that beliefs in conspiracy theories are increasing over time.

Finally, we found that beliefs (or non-beliefs) in conspiracy theories were stable – but not completely fixed. For any given theory, the vast majority of participants were “consistent sceptics” – not agreeing with the theory at any point.

There were also some “consistent believers” who agreed at every point in the survey they responded to. For most theories, this was the second-largest group.

Yet for every conspiracy theory, there was also a small proportion of converts. They disagreed with the theory at the start of the study, but agreed with it by the end. There was also a small proportion of “apostates” who agreed with the theory at the start, but disagreed by the end.

Nevertheless, the percentages of converts and apostates tended to balance each other pretty closely, leaving the percentage of believers fairly stable over time.

Inside the ‘rabbit hole’

This relative stability is interesting, because one criticism of conspiracy theories is that they may not be “falsifiable”: what seems like evidence against a conspiracy theory can just be written off by believers as part of the cover up.

Yet people clearly do sometimes decide to reject conspiracy theories they previously believed.

Our findings bring into question the popular notion of the “rabbit hole” – that people rapidly develop beliefs in a succession of conspiracy theories, much as Alice tumbles down into Wonderland in Lewis Carroll’s famous story.

While it’s possible this does happen for a small number of people, our results suggest it isn’t a typical experience.

For most, the journey into conspiracy theory belief might involve a more gradual slope – a bit like a real rabbit burrow, from which one can also emerge.

Mathew Ling (Neami National), Stephen Hill (Massey University) and Edward Clarke (Philipps-Universität Marburg) contributed to the research referred to in this article.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. “It’s not personal”: New mum shares divisive list of rules

An expecting mum has divided opinions with an extensive list of strict rules her family and friends must follow if they want to meet her new baby.

KIIS FM hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O read out the list live on air, as they debated the rules and regulations put in place by the pregnant woman.

The rules included not touching the baby, being vaccinated and only going to see the child if you've been asked, with the hosts asking listeners if they thought the rules were “too strict” or “reasonable”.

“We're drawing closer to the birth of our daughter, and we couldn't be more excited, but unfortunately we have to implement some boundaries. We hope you can respect our wishes and no one takes these personally,” the mum's announcement read.

First, the mum declared that there will be no information about the baby put online, including photos and information of the child’s name, or even an announcement that she had given birth.

“If we want you to know, you'll know,” the mum outlined.

Next, she said that only those who have “checked in” with the expecting parents since the announcement of the pregnancy will be notified of the birth.

The mum took a brutal swing at anyone else she hasn't heard from and wrote, “Otherwise we have taken your silence as not being interested in our friendship and it is also reciprocated.”

The couple went on to add that for the first two weeks following the birth, they will not be having any visitors.

“No exceptions, no texts, no calls,” the mum wrote in capital letters, further explaining that no visitors will be welcome at either the hospital or at home.

The couple also expect those who want to meet the baby to be vaccinated.

“Don't be offended if we ask for proof. We will not be putting her health at risk,” the point read.

The mum also asked visitors to “not smell of cigarettes or wear cologne or perfume that is too strong when meeting the baby”.

Lastly, if family or friends visit the couple at home they will need to bring their own snacks and drinks.

“Please do not expect to be hosted. Mum will probably be tired,” the list read.

After sharing a video on TikTok, some mentioned the number one parenting rule of all: “their baby, their rules”.

“Not a single one of those rules is unreasonable,” one person commented online.

“The people triggered over this are the type of people these boundaries are intended for,” another added.

However, others deemed the list as “passive aggressive”.

“Yeah right, nice knowing ya,” one wrote, while another said, “I hope she knows what she's doing.”

Tragic new details emerge as Vyleen White's husband speaks out

The tragic incident that occurred at a shopping centre carpark south of Brisbane over the weekend has left the community of Ipswich in shock and mourning as Vyleen White, a beloved grandmother, lost her life in what appears to be a random attack, leaving behind a devastated family and a grieving husband, Victor White.

Mr White revealed tragic new details of the incident when speaking to 7News recently, saying that they should in fact be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year. “I’m dealing with it the best way I can at the moment. When they stabbed her, they stabbed me,” Mr White told reporters.

Mrs White, aged 70, was shopping at Town Square Redbank Plains accompanied by her six-year-old granddaughter when she was allegedly attacked by a group of teenagers. The motive behind the attack, as stated by detective acting superintendent Heath McQueen, appears to simply have been the theft of her car, a Hyundai Getz.

Tragically, Mrs White's injuries proved fatal, despite the efforts of first responders, including a doctor who was alerted by the young witness of the alleged attack. Mr White expressed his disbelief and sorrow over the senseless attack, saying he believes his wife had been stabbed under the arm, into her chest, and that she “couldn’t even lift her arms up” to defend herself because she suffered from arthritis in both of her shoulders.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, a 16-year-old boy from Bellbird Park has been charged with Mrs White's murder, while four other teenagers face charges related to the theft of her vehicle.

Premier Steven Miles visited the White family to offer condolences, though Mr White expressed his frustration with the government's perceived lack of action in addressing such acts of violence. Despite the outpouring of support from the community, Mr White remains in a state of shock, struggling to comprehend the reality of life without his beloved wife.

As the investigation continues and the legal process unfolds, the memory of Vyleen White will be cherished by those who knew her, and her tragic passing serves as a stark reminder of the need for greater vigilance and community support in preventing such senseless acts of violence.

Images: 7News / Facebook

Zimmerman founder sets new price record for Bondi home

Simone Zimmerman has set a new home price record for Bondi, and she didn't even need to take out a mortgage.

The fashion guru and founder of Zimmermann has splurged $30 million for her four-bedroom, three-bathroom home just moments away from the iconic Bondi Beach.

“This ocean front executive residence is tucked away in a quiet street only moments to the iconic Bondi Beach and all it has to offer,” the listing for the beachside home read.

According to property records, the home - which is located just behind the popular Bondi to Bronte walk - last sold for $5.75m in June 2008.

The fashion mogul is reported to have bypassed local real estate agents, purchasing the home directly from a local investor.

No major changes have been made to the home since, but prior to Zimmerman's purchase it was being rented out at $4,400 per week.

According to PropTrack the median house price for Bondi is around $3.75m, which went up by 4.7 per cent over the past year.

The stunning home features 4 double bedrooms, all with large built-in wardrobes and a separate study perfect for the business-woman.

It also has a gourmet kitchen with a stainless-steel benchtop and large open dining room.

The lounge room opens onto a large deck with beautiful ocean views and plenty of natural lighting.

This comes after the luxury womenswear label sold a majority stake in its company to private equity investors in August last year.

Sisters Simone and Nicky Zimmerman are founders of the brand, which initially began as a stall in Sydney’s Paddington market, before the sisters opened their first local shop in Darlinghurst.

It now operates across 58 global destinations in the USA, UK, Europe and China, with the sisters now having an estimated net worth of around $1bn each.

Images: Realestate.com.au

Teen arrested over alleged stabbing of grandmother

A 15-year-old boy has handed himself in amid the investigation into the alleged murder of Vyleen White, who was fatally stabbed in front of her six-year-old granddaughter while on a grocery run in Ipswich.

The boy, who was allegedly one of four males shown in CCTV footage released by police, has not been charged in relation to the 70-year-old’s death.

Instead, he was charged with one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle for allegedly stealing the car used by the attackers to flee Redbank Plains Shopping Village on Saturday evening.

The boy handed himself into Ipswich Police Station at around 9.30pm on Sunday, and is due to appear at Ipswich Children’s Court on Monday.

The 2009 Hyundai Getz the boys used to escape was found in Springfield Lakes on Sunday morning and is being forensically examined.

The other four males have not yet been found.

White had just finished grocery shopping with her six-year-old granddaughter at Redbank Plains when she was stabbed in the chest in the centre’s underground carpark at about 6pm on Saturday.

The young girl was unharmed but left traumatised after witnessing the violent incident, and was reportedly screaming and crying for help.

White died at the scene a short time later, after attempts to revive her failed.

While police are still looking for the other attackers, Detective Acting Superintendent Heath McQueen said one man was responsible for the alleged murder.

“There is still one person involved in the attack,” he told a media conference on Sunday, and said that robbery was the motive.

They are appealing for anyone who might have seen the car between 6pm and 7pm on Saturday to contact them.

“It’s a cowardly crime like I’ve not seen in my time as a detective,” McQueen said.

“This is a (alleged) murder of a 70-year-old grandmother in front of her six-year-old granddaughter.

“Now is not the time to remain tight-lipped. Now is the time ... to provide us with the information we need to identify the offenders who are responsible for this (alleged) murder.”

Image: Facebook/ Queensland Police

“A beautiful soul”: Teenager killed in Aus Day boat crash identified

The teenager killed in a fatal boat crash on Australia Day has been identified, as her heartbroken family remember her as a “beautiful soul”.

Darcy Davey-Sutherland was enjoying a day on the water when two tinnies collided near the Gray’s Point boat ramp in Sydney’s Sutherlandshire, where the 16-year-old was critically injured.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and transported Darcy to St George’s Hospital, where she later died.

The 16-year-old was wearing a lifejacket at the time of the crash, and it is believed onlookers found her face down in the water and performed CPR on the teenager until paramedics arrived.

Her father, Michael Davey-Sutherland, said his daughter was "the beacon of light within our family" in both the UK and Australia.

"She was about to embark on the most special part of life as she stepped into adulthood," Michael told 9News.

"Words cannot describe the pain we feel at the moment."

Darcy, who was the eldest child and was very close to her two younger brothers, was also fondly remembered by her family and friends online.

"I will miss you so much Darc, I feel like I've lost a part of me," one person said.

"Will forever love you. “Disappointing”: New inflight Qantas video slammed for “missing the mark”

A new inflight safety video from Qantas has been widely panned for being “elitist” and “sexist”, while skimming over vital safety information.

The new video, which is set to replace an earlier retro video released in 2020 that marked the airline’s 100th birthday, features frequent flyers and Qantas staff delivering the pre-flight safety announcement from their favourite “magic places” around the world.

The video features destinations such as Litchfield National Park near Darwin and Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, as well as international places such as Lapland in Finland and Marrakesh in Morocco.

After the video was shared by the airline, members of the Flight Attendants Association of Australia were quick to express their feelings.

Flight Attendants Association of Australia national secretary Teri O-Toole told news.com.au the video was “disappointing” for a lot of different reasons.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Major update in fatal stabbing of young Melbourne doctor

The 16-year-old accused of stabbing a young Melbourne doctor to death had allegedly committed a similar crime just months prior.

The teenager was allegedly involved in the home invasion of Dr Ash Gordon, which turned fatal after the doctor chased the intruders from his home, ending when Dr Gordon was stabbed and left for dead.

As the teens now face charges for his death, an alleged previous victim of the same teenager has come forward, claiming the young man left him with serious head injuries after robbing his house in October.

His alleged previous victims claim that the Victorian government has “blood on its hands” and that the boy should not have been released on bail.

The victims told the Herald Sun that Dr Gordon's death has left them traumatised and struggling to move on from their own terrifying encounter.

In an emotional statement, the alleged previous victims pleaded with Victorian premier Jacinta Allan to reconsider the state's planned youth justice reform.

“We are trying to move on with our lives, however, when a case on (alleged) teen crime is reported, we feel anxious, helpless and frustrated with the broken system," they told the publication.

“The Allan government and the justice system have blood on their hands, and ultimately should be held accountable.”

Under the terms of the 16-year-old’s bail, he was to adhere to a strict nightly curfew, but still managed to allegedly break into Dr Gordon's home shortly before 5:30am on January 13th.

Ms Allan has faced increasing pressure to abandon Victoria's overhaul of the youth justice system which would see the age of criminal responsibility raised.

The government has committed to raising the age that a child can be arrested, jailed or charged from 10 to 12 by the end of 2024, and again to 14 by 2027, with serious crimes such as homicide being exempt from these changes.

Ms Allen however has insisted that the reforms are a key priority of her government and that they will help prevent future criminal activity.

“There’s a huge amount of work that’s being undertaken by Victoria Police to work with those young people ... [and] that sort of prevention-based activity is the best way to address future youth crime,” she said.

“At the same time, when offences are made, Victoria Police have the tools and resources to deal with those.”
