Woman steals artwork then WEARS it back to the museum

A 72-year-old French woman has been arrested after stealing an art installation from a museum.

Catalan artist Oriol Vilanova exhibited a blue jacket filled with postcards visitors could remove and examine at the Musée Picasso in Paris.

However, the elderly woman took the interactive exhibit one step further by taking the entire jacket and walking out with the garment.

The woman returned to the museum a few days later wearing the jacket, which she had tailored to fit her properly.

She was arrested by the police upon her return, who happened to be at the museum collecting evidence at the time.

While in custody, the retiree – who was reportedly “passionate” about art – confessed immediately to taking the jacket, according to local news outlet Le Parisien, but claimed she did not know it was an artwork.

After hours of interrogation, the public prosecutor’s office let the woman off with a warning and dropped the case. According to Le Parisien, the woman had been placed under guardianship.

The artwork, titled Old Masters, involved filling the pockets of a blue jacket with postcards depicting artworks by major figures in art history.

At the Musée Picasso, the jacket was filled with postcards purchased at flea markets and museum shops, all with images of Picasso’s work.

“When the museum told me the work had been stolen, I was surprised, but it was impossible to envisage the story that followed,” Vilanova told Artnet News.

Unusual car seat mistake that leaves your child in danger

With winter just around the corner, parents have been warned to not strap their child into a baby seat if they’re wearing a puffy jacket.

Tiny Hearts Education founder, former paramedic and mum Nikki Jurcutz explained that the puffy jacket leaves space between the child and the seat belt which makes it dangerous.

“As the temperature outside drops, we start to rug up. One of the best things I've found to keep my little ones warm is puff jackets, and I see so many kids wearing the same thing,” she wrote in an informative post on Facebook.

“But if you're going to use a thick jacket like that, there's something that it doesn't go well with: A car seat.”

She went on to explain how despite thinking you have strapped your child in safely, the space is dangerous when in an accident.

“When your bub is wearing a thick jacket and put in the car seat, you'll tighten the strap to remove the slack,” she continued.

“Thick jackets often trap air amongst the layers and feathers inside the jacket, so in an accident, the jacket compresses, creating excessive space between bub and their car seat straps.

“This excessive space means they may not be held securely in the car seat, which increases their risk of injury in a crash.”

Nikki went on to offer suggestions on how to ensure children are safely seated and strapped in the seat while wearing a jacket.

“To test if a jacket is too thick to wear in a car seat, put bub in while wearing the jacket and tighten the slack like you normally would [remember: to check your harness is tight enough, you shouldn't be able to pinch any of the strap between your thumb and pointer finger].

“Then take bub out of their car seat without loosening the harness, then put bub back in the car seat. If you need to tighten it, the jacket shouldn't be worn in the car seat.”

Otherwise, some alternatives to a puffy jacket can be: pre-warming the car before putting bub in, dressing bub in long-sleeve, using socks and singlets for extra layers, add blankets on the outside of the car seat.

For older kids, try putting them in the car seat first, then put the jacket on backwards over their arms on the outside of the car seat straps.

Image: Shutterstock

Google and Levi’s create jacket for cyclists

It's been a year since Google first announced its partnership with Levi's, but only now are the fruits of their collaboration starting to materialise.

As part of this year's I/O conference, the companies unveiled the first piece of connected clothing powered with Jacquard by Google technology: A Levi's trucker jacket made specifically for commuting bikers.

Woven into one of the sleeves is a patch of conductive fibres-so subtle you can barely tell it's there-that lets you tap or swipe across its surface and toggle a series of customisable commands, from silencing calls to querying Google Maps for directions.

The tech components are twofold. The metal-based conductive fibres are fully washable and sewed into the denim, and a button-sized piece of removable hardware called the "smart tag" allows the jacket to connect to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth.

Gesture controls and specific functions can be customised with the help of a companion app, but there's no word yet as to whether that app will be immediately available for non-Android users.

Among the tasks the jacket can perform: offering up suggestions for nearby coffee shops (or other types of venues), providing an ETA to your destination, and changing tracks on your playlist.

All of the info is conveyed by audio, so you're not distracted by screens. By next year, Google will release further details on battery specs and whether smart tags can be interchanged between garments; those logistics and the jacket's price are still in the works.

Though Levi's is Google's first Jacquard partner, the platform will ultimately be open to third party designers and app developers-just like Google's smartwatch line, Android Wear.

The conductive fibres that power Jacquard are compatible with any commercial loom, which means that any designer of textile-based products will easily be able to incorporate the technology into their wares. In other words: clothing is just the beginning, and furniture may well be up next.

Watch the video above to see how it works. Do you think it would be useful? Prince's Purple Rain jacket up for auction

A rare piece of movie memorabilia from Prince's 1984 classic film Purple Rain is hitting the auction block.

Prince donned the black and white blazer with leather sleeves while riding a motorcycle with co-star Apollonia Kotero.

"It's definitely the most important piece of screen-worn Prince clothing that's ever come up for auction," said Joe Maddalena, president of the Calabasas, California-based auction house, Profiles in History.

"This is a signature piece of wardrobe worn from an iconic movie in his most famous role."

The coat is a unique find from the typically reclusive artist, who was found dead at his Paisley Park complex just outside of Minneapolis.

"Prince memorabilia in general, it just really doesn't exist. It seems like he controlled it all," Maddalena said.

"This is the first time ever for something like this, and it might be the only time because the rest of the costumes may be in his (personal) wardrobe."

The original seller said her sister, a makeup artist, received the piece from Prince after they worked together on Purple Rain.

The June 29 auction will also include costumes from Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys and a Swarovski crystal studded glove from Michael Jackson's 1992 "Dangerous" world tour.

Maddalena said he believes the Purple Rain blazer will be the "star of the show" and expects it to sell for much more than the asking price, US$6000 to US$8000.

"Hopefully it will reach a price that is equivalent to his stature as a musician," he said.

Written by Nicole Evatt, first appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Related links:

10 most iconic movie shots of all time

The 15 most expensive films ever made

10 of Paul Newman’s best looks
