Sneaky zoom call hints at secret new MasterChef style project

<p><span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">Hold onto your spatulas – the culinary world just got a sneak peek into the top-secret virtual rendezvous of the original MasterChef judging squad, and let's just say, the excitement is sizzling hotter than a pan of frying bacon.</span></p> <p>Celebrity chef and all-around food wizard George Calombaris shook the internet like a well-shaken cocktail when he decided to share a teensy snippet of a recent clandestine Zoom chat with his former kitchen companions, Gary Mehigan and Matt Preston. </p> <p>And although the video quality was about as polished as a well-worn wooden spoon, it was the content that had tongues immediately wagging as Preston playfully poked Calombaris about his dessert tastes being as "daggy" as a dad joke at a barbecue. And George, bless his apron-wrapped heart, heartily agreed: "The daggier, the better. As daggy as we are on this Zoom call," he clapped back.</p> <p>Captioned with all the mystery of a burrito's secret ingredients, the post read, "Some serious food talk for a very special project. But mostly just a lot of shots and giggles." Shots, giggles, and maybe a sprinkle of culinary magic – sounds like our kind of party.</p> <p>Since its release, the post has gone viral, racking up more views than there are slices in a pizza and comments flowing in like a chocolate fountain at a dessert buffet.</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 326px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/reel/CvqDIXatvT7/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14"> <div style="padding: 16px;"> <div style="display: flex; flex-direction: row; align-items: center;"> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 50%; flex-grow: 0; height: 40px; margin-right: 14px; width: 40px;"> </div> <div style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; flex-grow: 1; justify-content: center;"> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 4px; flex-grow: 0; height: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; width: 100px;"> </div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 4px; flex-grow: 0; height: 14px; width: 60px;"> </div> </div> </div> <div style="padding: 19% 0;"> </div> <div style="display: block; height: 50px; margin: 0 auto 12px; width: 50px;"> </div> <div style="padding-top: 8px;"> <div style="color: #3897f0; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 550; line-height: 18px;">View this post on Instagram</div> </div> <div style="padding: 12.5% 0;"> </div> <div style="display: flex; flex-direction: row; margin-bottom: 14px; align-items: center;"> <div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 50%; height: 12.5px; width: 12.5px; transform: translateX(0px) translateY(7px);"> </div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; height: 12.5px; transform: rotate(-45deg) translateX(3px) translateY(1px); width: 12.5px; flex-grow: 0; margin-right: 14px; margin-left: 2px;"> </div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 50%; height: 12.5px; width: 12.5px; transform: translateX(9px) translateY(-18px);"> </div> </div> <div style="margin-left: 8px;"> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 50%; flex-grow: 0; height: 20px; width: 20px;"> </div> <div style="width: 0; height: 0; border-top: 2px solid transparent; border-left: 6px solid #f4f4f4; border-bottom: 2px solid transparent; transform: translateX(16px) translateY(-4px) rotate(30deg);"> </div> </div> <div style="margin-left: auto;"> <div style="width: 0px; border-top: 8px solid #F4F4F4; border-right: 8px solid transparent; transform: translateY(16px);"> </div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; flex-grow: 0; height: 12px; width: 16px; transform: translateY(-4px);"> </div> <div style="width: 0; height: 0; border-top: 8px solid #F4F4F4; border-left: 8px solid transparent; transform: translateY(-4px) translateX(8px);"> </div> </div> </div> <div style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; flex-grow: 1; justify-content: center; margin-bottom: 24px;"> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 4px; flex-grow: 0; height: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; width: 224px;"> </div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 4px; flex-grow: 0; height: 14px; width: 144px;"> </div> </div> <p style="color: #c9c8cd; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 0; margin-top: 8px; overflow: hidden; padding: 8px 0 7px; text-align: center; text-overflow: ellipsis; white-space: nowrap;"><a style="color: #c9c8cd; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none;" href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/CvqDIXatvT7/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A post shared by George Calombaris (@gcalombaris)</a></p> </div> </blockquote> <p>Just in case you've been marooned on a desert island with nothing but spam and a can opener, let's rewind a bit. George, Gary, and Matt were the original trio of culinary divinities who ruled MasterChef with their tastebuds and witty repartee for an entire decade.</p> <p>Fast forward to 2019 when the MasterChef cosmos decided to shift its cosmic culinary alignment, and boom! The trio was out, leaving fans with their mouths agape, much like when you taste-test something expecting sugar but get salt instead. CEO Paul Anderson cited "unsatisfactory commercial agreement negotiations" at the time – it's like a fancy way of saying, "We couldn't agree on the paycheck, folks."</p> <p>Rumour had it, that the judges asked for a 40% raise, basically demanding a pile of dough the size of a well-risen soufflé, to the tune of $1.5 million each for just one more season. Talk about giving the term "food for thought" a whole new meaning.</p> <p>And what's life been like after the MasterChef limelight? Well, Preston had a brush with reality TV stardom in <em>Dancing With The Stars</em>, but <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/entertainment/tv/sudden-exit-leaves-dancing-with-the-stars-viewers-stunned" target="_blank" rel="noopener">his dance moves</a> were as graceful as a turkey trying to tango. Then, there's Gary and Matt, who teamed up for a show called <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/now-we-re-cooking-masterchef-s-matt-preston-and-gary-mehigan-jump-to-channel-7-for-new-reality-show" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Plate of Origin</em></a>, which sadly got served a big ol' rejection slip by the audience. </p> <p>And let's not forget George – his restaurant group got slapped with a whopping $200,000 fine for underpaying staff to the tune of $7.8 million. <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/finance/money-banking/i-take-full-responsibility-george-calombaris-breaks-down-over-wage-theft-scandal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">But they did fess up and pay up</a>, so it's not all choppy waters in this seafood feast.</p> <p>In a podcast confessional, George shared, “We found the issue, we owned up, we paid back. A lot of the story that people don’t write about because it’s not cool enough or doesn’t get a headline is that we actually overpaid 49 per cent of our workforce that we never asked the money back for, and I wouldn’t of. I think the tough thing for me was, I thought by owning up, it’s the right thing to do, that’s how I grew up. So for me, that was probably the thing that hurt the most, being called a ‘thief’. I’m proud of how we acted, I’m proud of what we did to fix the problem.”</p> <p>So, following the leaked Zoom call, a sprinkle of kitchen drama and a trio of culinary legends ready to sauté their way into a new foodie escapade, it appears there is nothing left for us to do but stay tuned with our daggiest dessert forks at the ready.</p> <p><em>Images: Instagram</em></p>

AFL legend Gary Ablett Senior suing for brain damage

<p dir="ltr">An AFL legend is taking legal action against two of his former clubs for injuries he sustained during his career.</p> <p dir="ltr">Gary Ablett Senior is suing both Hawthorn and Geelong football clubs for concussions he suffered that have left him with lasting brain damage, according to a brain scan he underwent last year.</p> <p dir="ltr">Ablett claims that the clubs breached their duty of care, as they "knew or ought to have known of the potential long-term consequences of concussion suffered by the plaintiff".</p> <p dir="ltr">His lawyer Michel Margalit said Ablett was dealing with significant health problems as a direct result of his on-field injuries.</p> <p dir="ltr">"He's not doing well. He's had significant illness over the previous years and he's finding that he's struggling more and more as time goes on," she told ABC News Breakfast.</p> <p dir="ltr">"He has really significant medical and care needs, and there are just no funds available through the AFL Players Association or any other hardship fund to assist him with those care needs."</p> <p dir="ltr">Ms Margalit would not say how much Ablett was seeking but said it was a significant claim.</p> <p dir="ltr">"It is a very substantial case and could be really at the upper range of the allowance permitted by the compensation schemes in Victoria," she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">"This could be multiple millions of dollars."</p> <p dir="ltr">Ablett played his first VFL season with the Hawks in 1982 and was with Geelong for the remaining 13 years of his career, kicking 1,031 goals in his 248 games before retiring in 1996.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

Turns out his little body has been hit with TWO respiratory illnesses at the one time. He’s been resting up and is being cared for by amazing doctors. He had a great night sleep (not poor dad though) and is doing better. Our little champ!”</p> <p>Jordan is a proud mother who has repeatedly spoken of the joy Levi has brought into the couple’s lives, despite him being <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/gary-ablett-s-wife-shares-details-on-son-s-rare-disease" target="_blank" rel="noopener">diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease</a>.</p> <p>“It’s really difficult from a practical point of view but also really difficult just being his mum and not being able to hear his voice or know what he needs,” she has previously mentioned.</p> <p>“When he gets upset, I have to guess what the problem is. It’s also difficult because I’d love to just hear his thoughts, have conversation with my boy and for us to know he understands how much we love him.”</p> <p>Jordan has revealed she still carries the regret of not having her son medically assessed before the moment she knew something was wrong in March 2020.</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 326px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf0XZuXpO3p/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14"> <div style="padding: 16px;"> <div style="display: flex; flex-direction: row; align-items: center;"> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 50%; flex-grow: 0; height: 40px; margin-right: 14px; width: 40px;"> </div> <div style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; flex-grow: 1; justify-content: center;"> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 4px; flex-grow: 0; height: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; width: 100px;"> </div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 4px; flex-grow: 0; height: 14px; width: 60px;"> </div> </div> </div> <div style="padding: 19% 0;"> </div> <div style="display: block; height: 50px; margin: 0 auto 12px; width: 50px;"> </div> <div style="padding-top: 8px;"> <div style="color: #3897f0; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 550; line-height: 18px;">View this post on Instagram</div> </div> <div style="padding: 12.5% 0;"> </div> <div style="display: flex; flex-direction: row; margin-bottom: 14px; align-items: center;"> <div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 50%; height: 12.5px; width: 12.5px; transform: translateX(0px) translateY(7px);"> </div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; height: 12.5px; transform: rotate(-45deg) translateX(3px) translateY(1px); width: 12.5px; flex-grow: 0; margin-right: 14px; margin-left: 2px;"> </div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 50%; height: 12.5px; width: 12.5px; transform: translateX(9px) translateY(-18px);"> </div> </div> <div style="margin-left: 8px;"> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 50%; flex-grow: 0; height: 20px; width: 20px;"> </div> <div style="width: 0; height: 0; border-top: 2px solid transparent; border-left: 6px solid #f4f4f4; border-bottom: 2px solid transparent; transform: translateX(16px) translateY(-4px) rotate(30deg);"> </div> </div> <div style="margin-left: auto;"> <div style="width: 0px; border-top: 8px solid #F4F4F4; border-right: 8px solid transparent; transform: translateY(16px);"> </div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; flex-grow: 0; height: 12px; width: 16px; transform: translateY(-4px);"> </div> <div style="width: 0; height: 0; border-top: 8px solid #F4F4F4; border-left: 8px solid transparent; transform: translateY(-4px) translateX(8px);"> </div> </div> </div> <div style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; flex-grow: 1; justify-content: center; margin-bottom: 24px;"> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 4px; flex-grow: 0; height: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; width: 224px;"> </div> <div style="background-color: #f4f4f4; border-radius: 4px; flex-grow: 0; height: 14px; width: 144px;"> </div> </div> <p style="color: #c9c8cd; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 17px; margin-bottom: 0; margin-top: 8px; overflow: hidden; padding: 8px 0 7px; text-align: center; text-overflow: ellipsis; white-space: nowrap;"><a style="color: #c9c8cd; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none;" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf0XZuXpO3p/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A post shared by Jordan Ablett (@jordan_ablett)</a></p> </div> </blockquote> <p><em>Images: Instagram</em></p>

We’d agreed to make the next series of MasterChef, and it was the other terms that fell down.”</p> <p>He has also confirmed that it’ll be a long time before the trio are seen together on television again.</p> <p>“I think that the next step for us is to drop out of sight for a nice, long time,” he said on ABC radio.</p>

Gary Mehigan reveals the truth about his MasterChef axing

<p>After 11 years of mentoring and judging aspiring Aussie cooks on set, Gary Mehigan said he is ready to move on from<span> </span><em>MasterChef Australia</em>.</p> <p>In a new interview with<span> </span><a rel="noopener" href="https://www.who.com.au/exclusive-gary-mehigan-reveals-the-truth-about-his-masterchef-firing" target="_blank"><em>Who</em></a>, the celebrity chef has opened up about his axing from the Channel 10 show along with fellow judges George Calombaris and Matt Preston.</p> <p>Mehigan said he was driving into his garage when he received the call informing that he would no longer be a part of the reality program.</p> <p>“George rang me and said, ‘Did you hear? We’re done’,” Mehigan recalled.</p> <p>“And I remember saying to George, ‘Are you OK?’”</p> <p>Despite reports that the three judges were <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/food-wine/breaking-all-three-masterchef-australia-judges-axed" target="_blank">let go</a> over<span> </span><a rel="noopener" href="https://mumbrella.com.au/losing-matt-gary-and-george-is-what-masterchef-needed-to-become-as-diverse-as-the-food-it-celebrates-590382" target="_blank">pay dispute</a>, Mehigan said money was not the issue.</p> <p>“The axing wasn’t a surprise. In honest truth, it was never about the money,” he said.</p> <p>“The emotional response is more about not having the opportunity to do Season 12 and say goodbye to the viewers.”</p> <p>Despite the fallout, the 52-year-old said losing his TV role might be a blessing in disguise. “There’s a sense of relief,” he said. “The idea of going, ‘OK, so when I go to India in February, I’m going to take six weeks.’ I’m not tied down.”</p> <p>Mehigan said he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and take on a few passion projects.</p> <p>“We could have come back in a year’s time or two years’ time. So, for us it was time to move on, a time to do our own thing, time to make a different kind of TV. And after 11 years, we were all ready to hand the baton over to a brighter, younger chef.”</p> <p>Mehigan also revealed that he has started on a new journey to improve his fitness, and taken his former<span> </span><em>MasterChef</em><span> </span>judges along with him.</p> <p>“We’ve enrolled in the Noosa triathlon and we’re going to do it,” he said.</p> <p>“I'm going to do the 10km run, George is going to do the cycling. And at the end, Matt’s going to be holding the orange juice and we’re going to get a sub.</p> <p>“I would never have thought about doing something like that before!”</p> <p><span>Scroll through the gallery to see Mehigan in happier times with the show that launched his career.</span></p>

“I’ve eaten a lot of humble pie!”: Former MasterChef judge Gary Mehigan hits back

<p>Former<span> </span><em>MasterChef Australia</em><span> </span>judge Gary Mehigan has hit back at a journalist who accused him of thinking he is “irreplaceable”.</p> <p>The 52-year-old took to Instagram to let his thoughts be known as he shared a screenshot of the opinion piece in the <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/tv-and-radio/ex-masterchef-judges-enjoy-your-slice-of-humble-pie-20190725-p52as1.html" target="_blank"><em>Sydney Morning Herald</em></a> which criticised him and his fellow<span> </span><em>MasterChef</em><span> </span>judges George Calombaris and Matt Preston.</p> <p>The opinion piece went on to describe that the judges possibly grew “too comfortable… to see that they were not the source of the show’s success”.</p> <p>The journalist finished by writing that the former<span> </span><em>MasterChef</em><span> </span>judges should “take note of some other prudent career advice as they move forward. "Stop what you’re doing”: MasterChef judge Gary loses his temper at contestant Tim

<p><em>MasterChef Australia</em><span> </span>judge Gary Mehigan has been on the show since its beginning and rarely raises his voice at the budding chefs that go on the amateur cooking show.</p> <p>However, an incident with Tim Bone made Gary lose his temper on the show last night.</p> <p>Gary made a point to yell across the kitchen and demand that Tim return to his station so he can show him how to properly prepare vegetables for his jus.</p> <p>Naturally, Tim was frantic due to the intense pressure that comes with cooking challenges and was trying to cut corners.</p> <p>Gary wasn’t a fan of that. He demanded that Tim stop what he was doing.</p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en-gb"> <p dir="ltr">. <a href="https://twitter.com/crispycrackling?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@crispycrackling</a> running a tight <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/MasterChefAU?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#MasterChefAU</a> kitchen ship tonight 👨‍🍳 <a href="https://t.co/JKXnJP37pY">pic.twitter.com/JKXnJP37pY</a></p> — #MasterChefAU (@masterchefau) <a href="https://twitter.com/masterchefau/status/1143817475194335232?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">26 June 2019</a></blockquote> <p>Gary said that his Jus needed to be packed with flavour to impress the mystery guests, who would soon be coming in for service.</p> <p>“The skin, no,” Gary stressed, as he lifted up a large vegetable chunk.</p> <p>“Clean, yeah? None of that rubbish!”</p> <p>Gary explained to Tim that he was making too much for the service and take a look between the vegetables that Tim had cut up compared to the ones that Gary had just cut up.</p> <p>“Flavour and rubbish,” Gary said, pointing from dish to dish as a comparison of the right and wrong way to do things.</p> <p>"Tim, stop what you're doing," Gary said forcefully.</p> <p>Luckily, Tim took a moment to reflect on Gary’s criticism and realised it was coming from a good place.</p> <p>"Gary wants me to have a bit more finesse with the sauce. Nothing can describe those first terrible days.”</p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"> <p dir="ltr">"Can you imagine a time when there's laughter in your household again?" He had so much love to give to everyone, not just his family, complete strangers.</p> <p>“He had amazing strength for such a young person. If he wanted something he worked hard to get it, especially around his music.”</p> <p>Denton asked, “The last thing he did was to be kind. Do you take any comfort from that?”</p> <p>“I've tried, I've tried,” a distraught Angry explained.</p> <p>“I can’t think about those last moments.”</p> <p>“But one thing I did say … in the press, just to right some wrong things that were being printed, was that the way he was raised is what got him into that situation. He was looking after somebody. And so, do I regret that? How could I possibly regret that? He was the man I wanted him to be.”</p> <p>Distraught, Angry broke down in tears while saying, “I can’t do this, I’m sorry.”</p> <p>The Rose Tattoo lead singer further said he was going through the process of learning “acceptance".</p> <p>“Believing that time heals, et cetera, they’re all true. The reason they’re cliches is because they’re true. Time takes care of us in the most beautiful way if we allow that to happen. I’ve learnt that the hard way, like we all do.”</p> <p>Roxanne explained the horrific tragedy has brought the family closer together.</p> <p>“We still have happiness, regardless of something that has been so tragic for us,” she said.</p> <p>“If anything it’s taken the love for each other and the appreciation for each other to a whole other level.”</p>

MasterChef’s Gary Mehigan: “I was scared to meet Camilla!”

<p>If one of the judges on <em>MasterChef</em> was terrified to meet the royals, imagine how the contestants felt having to cook for them?!</p> <p>While the reality TV cooking show has featured many famous guests over the past decade, this week, for the first time in <em>MasterChef Australia </em>’s history, the contestants are faced with a huge challenge – cooking for none other than Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, at the Royal Flying Doctor Service base in Darwin.</p> <p>Speaking to <em><a href="https://www.nowtolove.com.au/reality-tv/masterchef/masterchef-gary-mehigan-scared-to-meet-camilla-49553">NowToLove</a></em>, judge Gary Mehigan admitted everyone was shaking underneath their chef aprons.</p> <p>“We were nervous as hell!” Gary admitted. “Our pride and professionalism were on the line. All we could think was, ‘What if the contestants properly stuff up?!’</p> <p>The judge continued, “George and I were probably a lot firmer than we’d normally be and dispensed advice [to the contestants] rather than clues.”</p> <p>On top of the pressure of having to cook for the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, the contestants “were also cooking outdoors in 37-degree heat and 90 percent humidity”, Gary explained.</p> <p><img width="497" height="420" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7819541/2-masterchef-prince-charles_497x420.jpg" alt="2 Master Chef Prince Charles"/></p> <p>So, what did everyone think of Prince Charles upon meeting him?</p> <p>“The thing that struck all of us was what a wonderful sense of humour the Princes of Wales has,” Gary shared.</p> <p>“At the royal reception he navigated the room perfectly, spending time with every group in the room.”</p> <p>But when it came to Camilla, Gary admitted he was a little star-struck!</p> <p>“I was a little nervous meeting the Duchess of Cornwall,” the judge confessed.</p> <p>“I should be old enough and wise enough not to be fazed, but it was a slightly surreal experience! She was lovely, obviously, and gave us her full attention.”</p> <p>He continued, “We laughed and talked about food and Prince Charles. My job was to get an idea of what he loved to eat on an ordinary day of the week and when they were travelling.”</p> <p>Are you looking forward to watching Royal Week on <em>MasterChef</em>?
