"I cried, so I'm happy": Frasier is back!

Frasier fans prepare as tossed salad and scrambled eggs are back on the menu, with the long anticipated sequel officially going ahead.

Frasier ran for 263 episodes between 1993-2004 and won 37 Emmy awards making it one of the most successful sitcoms in television history. In February 2021 it was announced that a sequel was in the making, with Kelsey Grammar returning to the title role and serving as an executive producer.

It was been reported that a single series had been greenlit by US streaming platform Paramount+, rumoured to be 10 episodes long.

The new series will see Frasier Crane in the next phase of life, in a new city following up from the final episode of the original, which saw Frasier give up a promising new job in San Francisco to move to Chicago.

The rest of the cast will reportedly feature mostly new characters, with members of the original cast (including David Hyde Pierce’s Niles, Jane Leeves’ Daphne and Peri Gilpin’s Roz) making guest appearances.

John Mahoney, who played Frasier and Niles’ father Martin, died in 2018 and Moose the dog, who played Eddie, Martin’s pet jack russell, died in 2006.

Earlier this year Hyde Pierce (Niles) said he had not yet heard many details about the sequel.

Actress Jane Leeves has suggested she will not be part of the revival, revealing that she remains committed to her role in medical drama The Resident. “I have no idea, but I won’t be leaving The Resident to do that if it happens,” she said. However, Grammer has been pursuing the sequel for years.

Not much has been revealed, but Grammer has proposed that an older Frasier Crane could be a professor or back in private psychiatry practice. He also suggested the story would be “something that puts him at odds with his brother again” and explore his relationship with his now adult son, Frederick.

In July, it was confirmed that they were “in the final stages of the final script for the first episode” for the sequel series, adding: “I’ve had a couple of runs through it, and I cried, so I’m happy.”

Image: Getty

“We’ve hatched the plan”: Kelsey Grammer excited about potential Frasier revival

With what was arguably the most successful spin-off in television history, it’s safe to say that fans are thrilled with the news that Frasier Crane might be returning to the small screen.

Frasier Crane, played by Kelsey Grammer, is entertaining the idea of returning to his iconic and neurotic character.

"My hope is that we can bring it back," he said excitedly.

"We're shopping for the right idea because I don’t think we should just pick up where we left off. Will and Grace has done a continuation, which is like the next day after they were last on the air–they picked up right where they left off. I don't think that's appropriate for Frasier," he explained to This Morning.

"He was leaving town at the end of the show previously, he was going to go and explore his life in Chicago with his new lady love. Whether that went badly or it went swimmingly, who knows, these are all themes we need to settle on and figure out what he's going to do next."

This isn’t the first time that fans of the show have been teased with news, as Grammer said that he has approved a tentative story for the show. However, a network hasn’t been secured.

“We’ve got it hatched. We’ve hatched the plan, what we think is the right way to go,” he said, during an appearance on In Depth With Graham Bensinger.

“We’re sort of on standby a little bit. Working out a couple of possible network deals that we’re circling. Frasier is sort of in a second position to that at this point. So there’s still stuff going on. But a revisit to Frasier, Frasier’s world is I think definitely going to come.”

While official details are slim at this point, Grammer has admitted that he wants a full cast reunion if possible.

"We would need to deal with [Mahoney's passing] within the storytelling, but I'd want everybody back, if they want to come back," he said.

This would mean his brother Niles, played by David Hyde Pierce, would be returning to the show.

Grammer has also confirmed that Frasier has moved on from his role on the radio.

"He’s passed the radio show. He might be an art dealer he might be a professor. We don’t know yet," Grammer told James Corden during an appearance on the Late, Late Show.

Exciting news for “Frasier” fans

If you’re a fan of Frasier, we’ve got some good news for you – the hit ‘90s sitcom may be about to return. Star Kelsey Grammer and NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt have reportedly been in talks for a number of years, and given the recently announced Will & Grace revival, it could be the perfect time for a comeback.

“We are discussing a little bit what a Frasier re-run would look like,” Grammer told TV Week. “It would never be a full-blown sort of picking up the series again, it would just be maybe as a look at what happened to him now.”

And Grammer’s not the only one in favour of a reboot. “I’ve had conversations with [executive producer] David Lee about [it],” Greenblatt revealed to TVLine. “Frasier would be great. I’d love to [bring back] Frasier. We put out feelers about [it] over the years.”

However, don’t get too excited just yet – we may be keen for a revival, but it seems very few of those involved share our enthusiasm. “I don’t think there’s any real interest,” Greenblatt added. “I think everyone’s moved on.

Tell us in the comments below, would you like to see Frasier return to our screens?
