"Like the cash cow had come out": Commuters puzzled by money bundles on motorway

Motorists in Perth have been left puzzled after bundles of cash were spotted flying across a motorway.

On Monday evening, several members of the public called Western Australia police after up to $40,000 in cold hard cash was seen flying across the Mitchell Fwy in Connolly, in the city’s northern suburbs.

According to Commissioner Col Blanch, honest civilians bundled up some of the mysterious money and “came forward with large wads of cash”.

“We believe that up to $40,000 has been recovered,” he said.

Police believe that the money came from an alleged drug deal gone wrong, but the incident is still under investigation.

"It looks like it was a total fiasco by the person involved and probably not one of our smartest (alleged) offenders," Mr Blanch said.

"It's like the cash cow had come out, and there was cash flying everywhere."

"There's no more money on the freeway … let's not go there."

After police attended the scene, they arrested a man close by who had another $8,000 in his possession, along with 51g of cocaine.

Despite some people stopping to retrieve the money to hand over to police, the free money prompted some motorists to stop their cars to retrieve a share for themselves.

Talk on social media suggested one commuter even pocketed about $10,000.

“You won’t believe it”: An a-moo-sing new addition for one Victorian farm

Megan and Barry Coster, two dairy farmers from Victoria’s West Gippsland region, were given the smiling surprise of a lifetime during their latest round of calving.

“My husband was collecting calves to bring in for the day,” Megan told ABC’s rural reporter Annie Brown. “And I think I was off with the kids at sport, and I just got this text message of this calf, and he’s [Barry] like ‘you won’t believe it’.

“Originally when he got the calf up he didn’t notice, and then he turned around and looked on the other side, and couldn’t believe it.”

The calf, affectionately named ‘Happy’ by the family, had been born with an award-winning grin - just not where one would expect. On his side was a very unique marking - two eyes, a nose, and a big smile.

When asked how old Happy was, Megan explained that he had only been born three or four days prior to the discovery, and went on to add that they had a lot of calving going on, so it was a busy time for them, and likely why they hadn’t immediately noticed what made Happy so special.

“We’ve seen some number sevens, or love hearts on the head, and a few strange markings but we’ve never seen anything that resembles a smiley face before … we’ve had thousands over the years, and we’ve never had anything like it,” Megan said.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she went on, before admitting she’d checked to ensure none of their staff had added any of the lines to the young cow. “And then I was pretty quickly sharing it with some of my friends - none of them could believe it either.”

Megan went on to post to Facebook, sharing a photo of their spectacular latest addition with the caption “the funniest marking we’ve had for a while”, to the delight of fellow dairy fans around the world.

“They look fake! How awesome,” wrote one individual, who seemed to share Megan’s initial disbelief, “best marking I’ve seen.”

“I guess that's his good side,” joked another.

“Love it. That's got to be a keeper as a pet,” said one, unaware that the family had every intention of keeping Happy on a pet - though he might also have to pull his weight as a lawn mower.

“One very happy calf,” came one declaration.

One person hit the nail on the head when they said “this one will always put a smile on your face every time u c [you see] it.”

Although not everyone was quite so onboard with the lovefest, with one woman admitting that she found it to be “a little bit clown-creepy”.

Images: Facebook

Shelter dogs become best friends with adopted miniature cow

There’s nothing sweeter than an unexpected friendship, and this one has to be up there with the most adorable. When Janice Wolf, founder of the Rocky Ridge Refuge animal shelter in Arkansas, adopted a miniature cow named Moonpie, she had no idea how quickly the shelter’s dogs would fall for the tiny cow.

Two dogs in particular, bull terriers Baby Cadbury and Spackle, who is deaf, took to Moonpie faster than Wolf could have hoped for. “[They] claimed Moonpie right off and are never far from her side,” Wolf told TODAY. “They won't let the others have too much time with her! The others sneak in kisses.”

The unlikely trio of furry friends have won themselves thousands of fans since Wolf began sharing photos of them together on the shelter’s Facebook page. One clever commenter proposed the four-legged pals were “brudders from anudder mudder.”

It’s not the first time the shelter has played host to some adorable interspecies friendships, with chickens and capybaras, tortoises and puppies, emus and donkeys all proving friends can be found in the unlikeliest of places.

See the animals’ enviously harmonious lives in the gallery above and tell us in the comments, what’s the most unlikely friendship you’ve ever encountered?

Cows casually stroll through women’s front yard

Now we’ve seen everything!

Gemma Reid told The Courier, "Barely a day goes by without seeing cows trampling past the front door...It has certainly been a talking point round here. A pony, a donkey and a cow walked into a pub

A ragtag group of barnyard animals have headed to an iconic Australian pub to celebrate their newfound freedom after escaping from their paddock on Monday night.

The owner of Humpty Doo Hotel, situated 40km north of Darwin in the Northern Territory, woke to find three unusual patrons at her establishment: a pony, cow and donkey.

Owner Mary Walshe, who lives next door to the pub, phoned NT police at 2.45am to alert them of the trespassers, fearing for the animals’ safety.

"I had to convince them that I wasn't on any sort of substances that might be causing this story,” she said.

Officers came to the aid of Ms Walshe, helped her corral the animals into her backyard using a bag of bread.

After assessing the situation, police also identified the ringleader of the trio, blaming the escape squarely on the pony.

"The little stallion [was] definitely the leader of the pack and had the other two following."

After a public appeal for information, Ms Walshe confirmed the owners of the animals had collected the animals and they’ve since returned to their paddock.

The trio had walked about a kilometre from their home before they decided to stop at the pub for a drink.

What's the strangest things you've ever seen in a pub? Cows save stranded seal pup

When Ian Ellis was birdwatching at Frampton Marsh nature reserve in Lincolnshire UK, he noticed a strange sight: a herd of cows crowding around an unidentified creature. But that wasn’t the end of it. When he took a closer through his telescope, he was startled to see a seal pup peer back at him from a mud puddle.

It is believed the tiny pup, who is only a five days old, swam into the marsh when the nearby North Sea was at high tide but became trapped when the tide receded.

Ellis searched for the pup’s mother but to no avail. He called Skegness Natureland Seal Sanctuary, who helped Ellis move the pup to Natureland for rehabilitation

“Once we got the pup back to Natureland, she went straight into the Seal Hospital to begin treatment,” Skegness Natureland Seal Sanctuary wrote on their Facebook.

“Her main problem is that at only five days old, she was orphaned and therefore had not fed for a while, she had lost quite a lot of weight and was dehydrated.”

The adorable animal was named Celebration and is enjoying all the herring she can eat. The Sanctuary says they will release the seal back into the wild once she reaches 30 kilograms and can feed in water on her own.

Related links:

Prostate cancer patients not given choice between surgery and radiation?

Ikea furniture warning following the death of two toddlers

This picture of shelter dogs hugging saved them from death

Meet the world’s tallest cow

In breaking bovine news, there has recently been crowned a new World’s Tallest Cow.

Blosom, the cow in question, hailed from Orangeville, Illinois and measured in at a staggering 190cm tall, surpassing the last winner from the early 1900’, who stood at 188cm. Her owner, Patty Meads-Hanson, claims that 13 year old Blosom was even taller in her youth, but shrunk with age.

Unfortunately, since the measuring Blosom has passed away as a result of an unhealable leg injury. Still, the gigantic bovine will be honoured in the 2016 Guinness Book of World Records. According to Meads-Hanson, Blosom was not at all jaded by the attention her impressive size garnered her:

"The funny thing about Blosom was how unaffected she was by all the attention that seemed to surround her. As long as she had her oats, and daily chin rubs and ear scratches, life was good.”

Related links:

LA’s stray cats are becoming the solution to the city’s rat problems

This goat likes to hang out with his best mate – a kangaroo

Meet the photographer whose images are redefining beauty standards

Eeny, Meeny, Miny and Moo! A mother cow gives birth to 4 calves - defying odds of 1 in 11 million

Eeny, Meeny, Miny and Moo – these are the cute names that were bestowed to the offspring of a cow in the United States who has defied odds of one in 11 million by giving birth to four calves.

Local veterinarian Mike Baird called the multiple births “extremely rare”, saying the odds of so many live births from one cow are one in 11.2 million.

“We knew she was pregnant, but we didn’t know she was going to do this,” said Jimmy Barling, whose wife owns the couple’s 20 or so cattle.

“This was a shock. This blew our minds.”

Barling’s wife, Dora Rumsey-Barling, owns the animals near the Arkansas and Oklahoma border in the southern US. Her granddaughter named the four black calves.

The couple watched the birth of the fourth calf after going to check on her when they saw buzzards circling above a field.

Because the mother cow is unable to nurse all four calves, the couple are relying on neighbours to help.

Moo has stayed with her mother, while Eeny, Meeny and Miny are with two different caretakers.

Meeny is the smallest of the calves, weighing in at about 11.3kg. A typical healthy birth weight for a calf is 34kg.

Related links:

Watch the moment when this elephant gets a prosthetic leg

Meet the therapy dogs helping children learn to read

Watch this mammoth crocodile steal a fish right off a fisherman’s line
