Cruise ship rescues 20 refugees

A cruise ship has rescued 20 refugees from a small boat near Cuba, amid a growing number of cruising vessels assisting refugees they encounter while at sea.

The Carnival Paradise was sailing between Mexico and Cuba when at least 20 refugees were spotted on what appeared to be a rowboat.

Vici Sheffield, a travel agent who was on the Carnival Paradise during the rescue, shared an image of the refugees online, revealing in the comments that passengers were told the refugees were taken aboard for “their own safety”.

“We just saved a boat in distress. Wow. First time for me,” she captioned the photo on her Facebook page, Vici’s Travels.

“Thankful they were spotted and the ship turned around.”

The boat was reportedly drifting at the time it was spotted, with the Carnival cruise ship slowing and turning around to assist those on board.

“In accordance with maritime law, we have taken them aboard our vessel and have notified all of the appropriate authorities,” the captain announced to cruise passengers, per CruiseHive.

Though the weather was clear, sunny and relatively calm at the time, the rowboat appeared visibly overloaded and in poor condition.

It was left adrift when the passengers were helped onto the cruise ship, with some containers left aboard.

Having left Tampa, Florida, on July 20, the Carnival Paradise was scheduled to visit Roatan, Honduras, followed by Cozumel, Mexico, before returning to Tampa on August 4.

The Carnival cruise ship's rescue comes just days after Carnival Sunrise rescued 12 Cuban refugees that were adrift to the south of Key West.

A @WPLGLocal10 viewer cruising on the @CarnivalCruise Sunrise sent us this video from the ship as it came to the aid of 12 men stranded in a small boat south of Key West yesterday. Floating fracas: Hour-long brawl breaks out on cruise ship

A mass brawl has broken out on a cruise ship heading into New York. However, it remains unsure if anybody will be charged.

The brawl broke out on the dancefloor of a nightclub of the Carnival Magic cruise ship in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday the 28th of June.

At the moment of the brawl, the ship was heading back to New York, but the exact location of the vessel will have a bearing on a criminal investigation depending on the jurisdiction of law enforcement it falls under. However, if it took place in international waters, it is possible everybody involved will get away scot-free.

The NYPD has confirmed security on-board were unable to contain the fight and had to summon the Coast Guard. "Security onboard the boat attempted to de-escalate the situation and subsequently called for the Coast Guard," the police said in a statement.

"The Coast Guard escorted the cruise ship to Pier 88, confines of the MTN Precinct. Uniformed personnel and Traffic Agents met the ship and the ship disembarked passengers without further incident".

An eyewitness passenger Theresa James claims the fight began over a "threesome".

Massive brawl breaks out in nightclub of Carnival cruise ship just off New York harbor. Hanging out for a cruise? You’re not alone

It feels like a lifetime ago when we were actually able to book cruises for a relaxing getaway.

Thanks to Covid, that all stopped about two years ago to help stop the spread of the infectious disease.

And let's not forget about the Ruby Princess fiasco…but we won’t go there.

The ban on foreign cruises in and around Australian waters was extended until April 17, and cruise ship owners are hoping they can hit the waters once again.

Marguerite Fitzgerald, the newly appointed President of Carnival Australia and P&O Cruises Australia believes a return to the seas is on the horizon.

“Once the ban is lifted, we expect there will be a lot of excitement and demand, and we want to be ready for that,” she told Cruise Passenger.

She predicts the cruise ban will be lifted by the middle of the year and is preparing a complete makeover of the ships following a grueling two-year break.

“We are cancelled through to the end of May. It takes a while to ramp ships back up, when you think about having to bring crew over and suppliers have a lead time to be ready to supply the ships.

“So a middle of the year return, assuming we continue to make good progress, that's what we are aiming for.”

Watch this sea (space).

Image: Carnival Australia

First COVID cruise death since restart of cruising scene

Carnival cruises has marked their first death since the cruise scene kicked back up, after a 77-year-old woman died from contracting COVID-19.

The woman departed on the Carnival Vista with her family on July 31, to sail to Belize, and soon tested positive for the novel virus after experiencing respiratory complications.

27 people tested positive over two weeks in late July and early August – the highest number of cases since cruises begun sailing again.

The New York Times reported she was a great-grandmother from Oklahoma.

The woman was admitted to a hospital in Belize and was put on a ventilator before being evacuated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and undergoing treatment.

Images: Getty Images

The outbreak aboard the ship was discovered on the fourth day of an eight-day cruise.

Twenty-six of those who tested positive were all crew members except for one passenger.

The Texas Governor, Greg Abbott previously signed a law banning businesses from requiring proof of vaccination, however more than 96 per cent of passengers and all but one crew member on the Carnival Vista were fully vaccinated.

Authorities are unsure if the woman who has since passed was fully vaccinated or not.

“We are very sorry to hear about the death of a guest who sailed on Carnival Vista,” Carnival said in a statement.

“Regrettably, there is a fair amount of disinformation about the circumstances of this matter.

“The guest almost certainly did not contract COVID on our ship, and she was assisted with expert medical care on board and was ultimately evacuated from Belize after we provided a resource to her family. We have continued to provide support to her family and are not going to add to their sadness by commenting further.”

Carnival has updated its vaccination policy that states a majority of guests will be required to be vaccinated.

They must also present negative results of a COVID-19 test taken within three days before boarding a ship.

Carnival has also states all passengers are required to wear a mask while indoors from August 7.

“We have always required vaccinations. From our restart in July, 95+% guests have been vaccinated. We meet the definition of a vaccinated cruise,” a Carnival spokesperson said.

“And we added the testing requirement on July 28. (August) 28 is when new guidelines for the Bahamas go into effect.”

Cruise line targets “offensive” clothing for passengers

Carnival Cruise Lines are issuing a new ban on clothing that might be considered “offensive”.

The announcement made in late 2019 has sparked a heated debate on whether regulating clothing worn infringes on “free speech rights” or if it is even enforceable.

Carnival's brand ambassador and senior cruise director, John Heald, released details about the addition to Carnival's dress code on his popular Facebook page, revealing it was added to the FAQ section of Carnival's website "in the past few days."

The section reads: "All guests are expected to ensure their clothing and accessories are respectful to fellow guests. Specifically, items worn during the cruise should not contain any message that may be considered offensive or contain nudity, profanity, sexual innuendo/suggestions. In addition, clothing/accessories should not promote negative ethnic or racial commentary, or hatred or violence in any form."

Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen said the change to clothing regulations came "after some incidents were reported in the media about other travel sectors where customers were wearing clothing with very threatening messages."

The reports "started a discussion about how we were prepared to handle such a situation and the need for clarification to both guests and crew."

Carnival spokesman Gulliksen said that while the line’s crew members are "not onboard to be the clothing or expression police," staff members will still go out of their way to "look out for guests wearing clothes with inappropriate images or language and ask them to change as needed.

"We will evaluate situations on a case-by-case basis and take appropriate steps as necessary."

Come and see the festivals and markets in Darwin

Darwin has two major seasons, the dry (April-October) and the wet. Now, I must say life in Darwin is dramatically different between the two seasons due to substantial differences in the amount of rainfall, humidity, and community activities for visitors.

The dry season, known affectionately as “The Dry,” is definitely the best time to visit Darwin. You’ll know it’s come as the beginning of the season is marked by the opening of the markets all around Darwin and surrounds.

The Markets:

The most famous of the lot are the Mindil Beach Sunset markets. As the name suggests, the evening-time markets are an incredible way to watch the sunset on Thursdays and Sundays. Stalls filled with clothes, gadgets, and more are lost amongst those offering yummy and quick eats. When it comes to food, the Mindil Beach markets offer the widest range of options from Indian, Malaysian, Japanese, and of course Australian. There’s something for everyone and plenty of room to sit either on the grassy areas or right on the beach to watch the sun go down.

The Parap, Nightcliff, and Rapid Creek markets are slightly further out of Darwin city, but definitely still worth visiting. On Saturday mornings at Parap and Sunday mornings in Nightcliff, the traveling market sellers spend the day delighting market goers usually until around 2pm. Although smaller in scale than the Mindil Beach market, there is a range of oriental cuisine available and a good selection of clothing and small goods stalls.

The markets run each week, but every so often Darwin gets to host larger events and festivals. Try to time your trip with one of the festivals!

The Taste Festival
The Taste Festival, which usually runs in April, is the the Top End’s way of pleasing the foodies. Restaurants all around Darwin are highlighted in the Territory Taste publication and are included in tasting packages and deals.

Fringe Festival
Darwin hosted the quirky Fringe Festival this year in early July which put on theater, art and comedy shows, pop-up galleries, live music, and more at venues around Darwin. While most are ticketed, some events are free for both Darwin residents and visitors to enjoy. Some of the local favourites include the many theatre shows and music events.

The Darwin Festival
This year, the Darwin Festival will be held on 10-27 August, good timing as the still-dry weather will be irresistible for visitors. This festival focuses on celebrating the traditional landowners and the multicultural identity of the Northern Territory. Over the 18-day festival Darwin hosts a multitude of free and ticketed events around the city. Whether you enjoy art or music or simply love to learn, listening to traditional stories and enjoying the cultural events are sure to please!

The Darwin Cup Carnival
Love the races? The Darwin Cup Carnival in July and August is a favourite piece of the fun of The Dry! Try to catch Ladies’ day or one of the many other special days at the Darwin Turf Club.

As you can see, the dry season is an exciting time to visit Darwin. And, while the markets and festivals keep you busy in town, the water-holes and swimming areas in the nearby national parks are finally open for swimming when the dry season arrives. So, inside or outside the city, the dry season is surely the best time to plan a trip!

Written by Luray Joy. Passengers infected with gastro outbreak on way to Singapore

A cruise ship that left Perth earlier this month has ended its journey to Singapore with some unhappy passengers who were infected with norovirus.

It is understood by news.com.au that at least 16 passengers on board the ship had symptoms of the virus before everyone disembarked on the final day of the trip in Singapore.

The ship had 2,000 passengers on board.

Symptoms of norovirus generally last between one and three days. Medical experts recommend regularly washing your hands to avoid contracting the disease.

A spokesman for Carnival Australia said that despite initial reports, the vast majority of passengers on board the ship were not impacted by the norovirus.

“The vast majority of the 2000 guests on Sun Princess were unaffected but it takes relatively few cases of illness to be reported for on-board sanitation measures to be increased,” the statement provided to news.com.au read.

“Creating and maintaining a healthy on-board environment is always a priority with the highest public health standards employed based on best international practice. On-board sanitation was swiftly stepped up following some guests reporting gastrointestinal symptoms confirmed as being due to Norovirus.

“Out of an abundance of care and in line with best practice, extra cleaning of the terminal was also carried out on Wednesday.”

Carnival Australia’s cruise ships feature casinos, pools and sporting facilities.

Cruise from hell: Passengers reject “unacceptable” compensation after violence breaks out

Couple set record with 200th cruise in 15 years

For many cruisers, Caribbean-focused Carnival is a starter brand – a line you sail a few times before you move on to more globe-circling operators such as Holland America or Princess.

Not so for Bernard and Janice Caffary.

Carnival this month celebrated the Florida couple's 200th cruise with the line - a record for the Miami-based company.

The Caffarys crossed the 200 cruise mark on a sailing of the 2974-passenger Carnival Liberty out of Port Canaveral, Florida.

The couple achieved the feat in just 15 years, meaning they averaged nearly 15 cruises a year with Carnival. In total, they have spent 878 days at sea with the brand - the equivalent of more than two and a half years.

Carnival honoured the Caffarys' 200th cruise with welcoming signage throughout the Port Canaveral terminal where the ship is based, and they were the guests of honour during special VIP celebrations.

The line says the couple already has 30 more Carnival sailings booked.

Written by Gene Sloan. What smart technology means for cruises

The latest cruise technology provides a truly seamless experience at sea. Welcome to Carnival’s new Ocean Medallion.

It can do just about everything

Put the medallion in your pocket, around your neck or on your key chain, and then you never need to think about it again. Hardware and software work together across almost every element of the guest experience, from paying for extras to attending shows and finding your way around the ship. The lines hope it will offer the perfect blend of high tech and personalised service.

Sensors track you around the ship

The medallions will soon be found on the 144,000 ton Regal Princess, the largest ship in the Carnival Corp fleet. 7,000 sensors are spread across more than 155 kilometres of cable running throughout the ship, tracking passengers’ every move. These sensors work out where you are, what you’re doing and where you might want to go next. It’s all part of building a tailored, seamless experience for passengers by using data to anticipate their every need.

Your room knows you’re coming

First there were room keys, then swipe cards, then RFID wrist bands that would open the door when held up to the lock. Now, you don’t even need to do that. The ship’s sensors will track your movements and unlock the door just as you arrive. And based on your previous data, it can even set up the room the way you like, such as turning on the air conditioning.

It will cut down on lines

Everyone hates waiting in line and the Ocean Medallion promises to fix the problem. They will streamline plenty of processes, from embarkation and disembarkation to lining up for restaurants, ordering a drink and more. The technology identifies bottlenecks and allows the crew to work more efficiently, making for a less stressful experience for everyone.

It can be good for the environment

Because the sensors know where passengers are, they also know where passengers aren’t. That means the smart technology can turn off lights or air conditioning in individual cabins or in areas of the ship that are empty. On a huge ship, these small reductions could make a big difference.

Related links:

6 tips for doing laundry on a cruise

7 tips to make your cruise crew love you

The cruise of a lifetime through the Oxford Canal

Cruise ship comes to rescue of stranded yacht

A crisis has been narrowly avoided off the coast of NSW as the Carnival Spirit cruise ship responded to distress calls from a superyacht taking on water.

The lavish superyacht Masteka 2, which costs a whopping $3,000 an hour to rent, lost steering around on 5am on Tuesday with six passengers on board.

When things started to take a turn for the worse an alert from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority was promptly sent out and the first ship to respond to the distress call was the cruise liner Carnival Spirit, which was en route to New Caledonia.

Two female passengers who were injured were rescued by the Carnival Spirit, which was instructed to remain with the luxury vessel until more help could be provided.

The Maritime Authority dropped umps and tools for the Masteka 2 and the Carnival Spirit provided extra fuel and emergency supplies before continuing on to the Isle of Pines.

The injured women could stay on board until it docks in the New Caledonia capital of Noumea, so they have essentially scored themselves a free ride on a cruise ship.

What a scary situation, but thanks to some quick thinking a crisis was avoided. Cruising the Mediterranean on the Carnival Vista

It's day five of our fun-crazy Mediterranean cruise, and our ship the Carnival Vista has just arrived in Naples – fortunately the sunny one in Italy, not its storm-struck namesake in Florida, US, which featured briefly, but erroneously, in the ship's morning weather forecast.

There's so little time, so very much to do. Explore the famous, ancient Roman ruins of Pompeii? Climb Mount Vesuvius for up-close views of its restless, rumbling, volcano? Take a white-knuckle, coastal drive to seaside gems such as Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento?

Or, join the locals, already gathering on the Naples waterfront? Today, 200 local chefs are assembling 2000 kilograms of flour, 1600 kilograms of tomatoes, 2000 kilograms of mozzarella cheese, 200 litres of oil and 30 kilograms of basil as they attempt to break the world record for the longest pizza.

Proud Neapolitans lay claim to being the inventors of the popular, cheap eat, but the world record is held by northern rivals Milan, with a distance of 1.59 kilometres.

The off-beat event is bound to serve up a lot of laughs, precisely in line with the holiday-brochure pledge – the philosophy driving, the bright white, shiny-new Vista – to provide memorable "fun ashore, fun aboard".

Indeed, the ship's slogan is "Fun for all, all for fun". Its long, detailed, daily list of activities, excursions and entertainments is called the Fun Times.

The refreshments list comes with the "Fact: Anecdotes are 17 per cent funnier with a drink". Plastic ponchos – required only once, in Turkey, on the 10-day cruise – are sold under the slogan "Soak up the fun, not the rain". And so on.

Even mundane items, such as the "privacy"/ "service-now" tags hung on cabin doorknobs, are made, well, funny. Thus, guests indicate whether they are "snoozin'" or "cruisin'" – in some cases, one suspects, "boozin" in one of the ship's 25 bars.

The really, funny thing is that the Carnival Vista works wonderfully for the vast majority of guests – even for the many "oldies" like me and my wife, who far out-numbered the kids on board during a cruise run during school term-time.

The floating "future of fun", as it is described by Carnival Corporation chairman Micky Arison, is an absolute whopper. It weighs 133,500 tons, stands 15 stories high, carries up to 3954 guests and has a full complement of 1450 crew.

Big, potentially intimidating numbers, especially during embarkation at the start of a cruise which took in five countries: from Barcelona in Spain to Athens in Greece, via Marseilles in France, Livorno and Rome in Italy, the Greek islands of Crete and Rhodes, and Ephesus in Turkey.

But thanks to a wide choice of activities, venues and excursions, and the immaculate organisational skills of the Vista's ever-cheerful staff, lines move quickly and efficiently. Queues, say, to go ashore, to dine in one of the free, self-serve restaurants, or to take an elevator to different attractions in the new "floating city" ,are generally short, fast-moving.

From the moment visitors come aboard via the atrium, which features a colourful triple-deck, LED column filled with writhing underwater shapes, they stream off in many different directions.

They soon spread out, to spacious, brightly coloured rooms, state-rooms and suites, daily decorated by "towel art" – now so popular it's the subject of a new do-it-yourself book available on board – or dash off to investigate the ship's myriad attractions on offer, in some places round-the-clock.

They range from state-of-the-art, high-activity, outdoor thrills and spills in the sports area to a library stocked with the latest bestsellers. From a "peleton" of spinning gym bikes and running machines to an extensive casino, where the roulette wheels and slots whirl well into the night.

Where better to start than at the top, in the Carnival Waterworks, where grown-ups and kids alike can "spiral down classic slides, and get drenched by a giant bucket of water"? Or, take the long way down by raft-riding tube, on the twisting, 150 metre-long Kaleid-o-Slide. Yee-ha!

For even more thrills, guests can strap themselves into an open, streamlined "capsule" and pedal along the unique SkyRide, on a 300m, circular track, suspended more than 50m above the sea.

Still not exhausted? Well, it's time to head across to the Sportsquare, which offers mini-bowling and arcade-style basketball, as well as ping-pong, mini-golf, five-aside football and table tennis, where I was daily humiliated by my wife.

Only slightly less athletic pursuits can be found every afternoon, usually in the Ocean Plaza, including such things as the "Hip-hop", "Pop Workout", "Country Line", "Latin America" and "Groovy 60s", (from the Twist to the Mashed Potato), dance classes.

In need of a lie-down, rub, massage, body wrap or other expert treatment after all that exercise? Then head for Cloud 9 which comforts, pampers, offers, among other things, infra-red sauna, sensory showers and the "hamman", a chamber similar to a Turkish bath.

Feeling hungry after all that activity, or inactivity? Not surprisingly, given the number of guests aboard, the Carnival Vista offers more than a dozen places, some round-the-clock. That's more than a different one a day for guests taking the cruise from Barcelona to Athens.

Some are included in the overall cost of the cruise. Others, such as Bonsai Sushi, Ji Ji Asian Kitchen, Cherry on Top ice cream parlour, the Italian Cucina del Capitano, Guy's Burger Joint and the Blue Iguana Cantina, which specialises in tacos and burritos are very reasonably priced – even for Australians armed only with weakening dollars.

A full day done? Well, no. According to our hyper-active cruise director Matt Mitcham, it's only just beginning. For, guess what? The fun is only just beginning. "Viva Variety!"

In the Imax Theatre – the only one sailing the seven seas – the larger-than-life screen and immersive sound system is being readied to blow guests away with a triple-header: the doco A Beautiful Planet, The Jungle Book and, in 3D, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

At the same time, there will probably be movies, too, showing in the Thrill Theatre in the Multiplex, and Dive-in Movies screen in the Seaside Theatre.

In the Liquid Lounge, the US$750 balloon bingo is just beginning, while in the Limelight Lounge the Punchline Comedy Club is also opening for laughs. Be warned, though: the later the presentation, the lewder, the more provocative, the performance.

Indeed, some of it is adult-only. A cheeky poster promoting the late, late shows, suggests, "If you don't like the language, please sit right at the front where we can see the look on your face". You have been warned. Elsewhere, some guests are singing along in a High Seas karaoke session. Some are up on stage playing giant-size versions of well-known board games. And the cast are warming up and the audience is queuing up for the big, live, Playlist Productions show of the evening.

One night it's celebrating "the rhythmic sounds of Cuba", another "New York City nightlife of the 70s", and yet another, entitled "America Rocks!" It's time, says Matt, to "pump your fists to the best American rock anthems".

And if guests are not wiped out by all this fun, this activity, there are late-night deck parties: the Rock-n-Glow Party, the Mega Deck Party and the "awesome" , the "totally bodacious", Serenity Night party, with DJ JBLENDZ.

It promises "great music, fresh sea air, and a lounge vibe to inspire romance, camaraderie and maybe even a little dancing fun!"

Or you could go shopping, visit the on-board art gallery, read a book from the library or, like we did sooner or later: go to bed. All the rooms, whatever their style and price, were not just meticulously maintained by our jovial cabin steward, Leonardo; they seem soundproof.

Fun, like cruise ships, comes in all shapes and sizes, we reflected as we happily returned to the Carnival Vista after a day's sightseeing in Naples, where a local guide told us that the infamous mafia were still active locally. "But they only kill each other," she smiled.

We are pleased to be back in our big, temporary home. Pleased to relax, to go to the gym, to read a book, to go to a show, to go to bed early. Well, woo-hoo, 10pm!

Pleased, too, to discover that in our absence, Naples had triumphed. It had wrenched from Milan the world record for the world's longest pizza, with a length of 1.85 kilometres. Bravissimo!

Have you ever cruised with Carnival? Do you have any cruises on the cards?

Let us know in the comments!

Written by John Huntley. Is this the most amazing cruise ship in the world?

Including an IMAX cinema, the largest waterpark in their fleet, bicycles and a brewery, cruiseliner giant, Carnival, has revealed what their next ship will look like and it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Said to be sailing the seas by mid 2016, the new ship will have a world-first elevated “sky ride” rail and a water park consisting of a 140 metre tube-slide. The sky ride feature is a 250 metre suspended rail consisting of hanging “recumbent-like” bicycles that allow people to peddle themselves around the ship and enjoy views from 45 meters above the deck. Catering more to the active holidaygoer, next to the sky ride will be a hanging ropes course as well as the largest water park in the fleet.

According to the company, guests will be able to hop on inflatable rafts and slide their way through an “adventure of exhilarating twists and turns with stunning kaleidoscope visual effects.”

The ship will also have the very first IMAX theatre at sea and is slated to be three decks high and will show the latest Hollywood blockbusters, classics and IMAX documentary films.

The new ship will also contain a pub with an active brewery on site. While this is certain to impress beer-lovers, the Carnival Vista will be the second ship to have such a feature.
