Husband arrested over murder of beloved Nonna

Frank Dimasi, 91 has been charged over the murder of his wife, Maria, 85, who was found dead inside the couple's home over the weekend. Maria was found with multiple stab wounds inside the couple's home in Findon, Adelaide, at around 11:20pm on Saturday. Frank was arrested at the scene and charged over the murder of his wife of over 50 years on Monday. He is currently under police guard at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, having suffered from self-inflicted and non-life threatening wounds, according to SA police. He is also reported to suffer from a "neurological disability". Maria was a beloved member of the Italian community in Adelaide. She was regarded as the "neighbourhood matriarch” and was well-known because of her love for cooking, including making meals for the vulnerable. She was heavily involved with the family's taxpayer-funded meal service, Nonna’s Cucina, that even Health Minister Mark Butler recognised her hard work and described her as "extremely generous". “Maria lit up the kitchen at Nonna’s Cucina,” he said. “She was always extremely generous and made sure no one ever left her company hungry. “Maria gave so much to her community and will be greatly missed by her loved ones and everyone who had the pleasure to meet her.” South Australia Premier Peter Malinauskas also paid tribute to the beloved great-grandmother and described the murder as "tragic". “On a personal level, Maria Dimasi was a very significant contributor to our state, particularly in the western suburbs’ Italian community,” said the premier. “Nonna’s Cucina, which will be very well-known to a lot of South Australians, did amazing work delivering meals to people that are vulnerable, particularly the elderly. On Tuesday morning, Matt Shirvington read an excerpt of the letter, and both hosts were equally emotional, with Shirvington's voice breaking at one point. “I am writing this sitting in a bedroom with dirty clothes on the floor, an unmade bed, six drinking glasses lined up on the bedside table, an empty KFC box next to the glasses, wardrobe doors left open and a row of skateboards leaning on the wall – it is a mess and it’s perfect. This is where 101 lived,” the letter read. “101 is Charles Stevens – Charlie, Charlie Boy, Chas, Links, Steve. You lived life and gave so much to so many. You were a force of nature and we will never forget your beautiful cheeky, disarming smile. “Son, brother, grandson, uncle, nephew, cousin, friends, workmate, teammate. So much more than just a number on a tragic tally.” His heartbroken parents described him as a "Cheeky, intense and funny" boy, who was loveable from the moment he could talk. The letter comes after the 18-year-old driver accused of being behind the wheel during the alleged hit-and-run was granted bail. On Monday, three witnesses stated in court that the driver performed a U-turn and hit Charlie, who was waiting for the Schoolies shuttle bus to take him and his friends to Victor Harbor from Goolwa Beach. It is alleged that the 18-year-old was speeding and travelling on the wrong side of the road before hitting Charlie. Another witness from inside the car said that a group of young men were on the west side of the road, partially on the footpath, and that there was a single male on the other side. She told the court that the male on the east side ran across the road and into the incoming car. The driver allegedly drove a short distance before calling his mum and asking her if he should turn himself in or call the police, before he was arrested. "The last male sanctuary": Barber shop campaigns to formally ban women

An Adelaide barber shop which prides itself as "the last male sanctuary", has applied for an exemption to the Equal Opportunity Act, which, once approved, will allow it to formally ban women. The team behind Robbie's Chop Shop took to Instagram to ask over 42,800 of their followers to help with their application to Equal Opportunity SA. In their first pinned post on Instagram, the barber shop posted a photo of the letter explaining that they have applied for an exemption following a complaint made to the commission about their request for women to observe that it is a male-only business. "Unfortunately, this is not the first complaint of this type that we have received, so in order to deal with them once and for all, we have decided to make an application for an exemption to the Equal Opportunity Act," they wrote in the letter. They added that the business prides itself in being able to provide "a safe space for men to discuss their issues", so they applied for the exemption to deal with the complaints once and for all. The business believes that they are "not in breach of the act" if they are able to obtain this exemption. "As part of our application, we would like to include statements from you, our loyal and valued customers, that explain why you love Robbie's Chop Shop, and why you feel that is so important for Robbie's Chop Shop to be a safe space for men to come together and discuss their issues," they pleaded. Their plea has divided followers, while some men and women agreed with them, others seem to disagree with their stance. Police are investigating after an Adelaide private school teacher was filmed yelling and allegedly shoving a teenage boy on a train. The man has since been stood down from his role. The incident occurred at about 3:40 pm on Saturday on a train travelling between Lynton and Eden Hills Railway Stations, with footage of the alleged assault being uploaded to social media. The footage shows the St John’s Grammar School teacher standing in the aisle of the train, yelling at a group of teenage boys sitting down with their mountain bikes. “Boys, if you think I’m not going to kick you off at the next station you’ve got another thing coming,” he yells. “I’m not f***ing around with you kids,” he says in another video. One of the videos cuts to slow-motion footage, showing the teacher appearing to shove one of the teenagers with the words “Moments before disaster” on the screen. On Wednesday, a South Australian police spokesman told <a href="http://news.com.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news.com.au</a> that the incident was still under investigation. “A man allegedly assaulted a teenage boy and was verbally abusive towards him,” the spokesperson said. <a href="https://7news.com.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">7News </a>has said that the footage didn’t capture the entire incident. Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. St John’s Grammar School confirmed it was aware of the altercation and the man appearing in the footage was a “longstanding” teacher of the school. “The teacher has been stood down indefinitely until further notice while the school conducts an initial investigation,” the school said in a statement. Grieving teenager Jakoda Williams-Boyce has pleaded with thieves for the return of her grandmother’s ashes. The theft occurred when the 19-year-old from Adelaide left her nana’s remains in the boot of her grey Mitsubishi Lancer after parking it on Amadeus Crescent in Christie Downs. The car was stolen at some point between Thursday evening and Friday morning with the urn still inside. Jakoda had been living with her grandmother, Sharon, when she passed away at the age of 64. The family had been in possession of Sharon’s remains ever since, until they came under Jakoda’s care four weeks ago. In images shared with 9News, Jakoda can be seen cradling the precious urn, and smiling in an old photograph with her nana alongside the caption “10 months today. I love you my angel.” “I will say, it is my own fault for putting that personal item there, but I didn’t think twice. I shouldn’t have to worry about people on the street,” the teenager admitted, speaking to 9News. It remains unclear how thieves got their hands on the car, as the keys and the car’s battery remain with Jakoda, though glass was reportedly scattered across the scene. Disabled woman dragged off train by police

A disabled woman has been dragged off a train by police officers and station security in Adelaide, as horrified commuters captured the incident on video. On Saturday evening, travellers filmed the altercation between the woman, who uses a wheelchair, and police officers, as the officers were seen dragging the woman off the Adelaide Metro service and onto the platform. “She’s disabled and you’re going to drag her like that?” a witness is heard asking. The woman was moved to a bench on the platform, and is seen pushing the officers away when they try to talk to her. The officer then appears to push her back before he holds her down on the bench. In a statement, SA Police told NCA NewsWire that uniformed patrols were called to the Adelaide Railway Station following reports of a disturbance on the train. “Two people on the train were smoking and forcing the train doors open, they were asked to leave by security however refused to get off,” the spokesperson said. “Police attended and the pair still refused to get off the train and continued to act in a disorderly manner.” “A police officer attempted to push the wheelchair off the train; however the suspect stood up and pushed the officer in the chest.” Police said the 47-year-old disabled woman was issued with an adult caution for failing to comply with directions to leave a vehicle and resisting arrest. "Bloody grinch”: Outrage over new fee to see Santa

Department store giant David Jones have been slammed as the “bloody grinch” only a month away from Christmas. The super-store in Adelaide has sparked outrage amongst the locals over Santa’s visit to the iconic Magic Cave inside its Central Plaza store, and for the first time in 126 years, the Magic Cave are charging families to see the man in red. Booking arrangements apply and anyone without a reservation will be turned away, whether or not they’re on Santa's nice list. While pre-pandemic Santa was free, patrons are now being asked to book and pre-pay for a photo package. Two 4x6 images will cost parents $24.95 while Santa’s Gift Pack of photos comes in at $49.95. Community in mourning: Adelaide woman who was struck by a train identified

The <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/family-pets/adelaide-woman-struck-by-train-while-rescuing-her-dog" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Adelaide woman who was struck by a train</a> has been identified as local legend Becki Townsend Gun. Two years ago, a neighbour painted her portrait on a power pole out of love and admiration. The work of art now holds new significance for the community in Clarence Park after she passed away in what locals have described as “unfair” circumstances. The journey over the pedestrian crossing at her local train station was a twice-daily route for 63-year-old Becki, walking her two beloved dogs separately. It was her walk with elk hound Floyd that claimed both their lives, after they were both hit when she was trying to get him away from the tracks. According to neighbour and friend Annie Wawryk: “she was very close to all the neighbours. She was a really lovely person and she really cared about other people.” “She was loved on the street. She was really outgoing and gregarious. She would chat to everyone.” One example of Townsend Gun’s caring nature was that she would keep company with a neighbour with dementia so his wife could leave the home to do shopping, Wawryk said. Neighbours say the manner of her death was not fitting for the type of person she was. “It just seemed so unfair that she’d go this way,” Wawryk said. Investigations are still underway. Adelaide woman struck by train while rescuing her dog

A woman has been fatally struck by a train in Adelaide, trying to save her dog. Emergency services were called to the scene in Cowper Terrace at Black Forest in Adelaide’s south. It is believed she was trying to save her dog at the time the incident took place at around 1 pm on Tuesday September 13. She was struck by the passing train about 150m south of the Clarence Park Train Station. The 63-year-old woman and her dog died at the scene. It is understood that she had been walking her dog when he got away from her and ran onto the tracks. She reportedly followed the dog onto the tracks and was attempting to get him to safety when they were both struck. Witnesses said the train driver tried to avoid the accident, braking desperately and blowing the horn for about eight seconds as the train slowed. One witness spoke of feeling “two bumps” and hearing “two loud thumps”. Passengers were jolted forward when the train finally did stop and the Seaford and Flinders train lines were shut down for three hours. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing and anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Image: 7News

Crime scene established after suspected murder-suicide at retirement village

An elderly couple who were found dead in their unit at an Adelaide retirement village have been identified, with police treating their deaths as a murder-suicide. Barbara and Dennis Willshire, both 92, were found on Wednesday morning by a staff member during morning rounds, though police say it is unclear when the couple died. After the staff member raised the alarm, police and paramedics were called to the unit, which is part of a larger retirement and nursing home precinct in Glynde. The quiet village quickly became a crime scene, with major crime detectives working all day to piece together what happened in the leadup to the couple’s death. Superintendent Matt Nairn of South Australia Police said it was believed that the man killed his wife and then himself, though a full investigation would be conducted. “We believe it is a murder-suicide and, at this stage, we believe the man has killed potentially his wife and then taken his own life,” Nairn said. He added that there was nothing untoward known about the couple’s relationship and that their children had been notified. “As you can imagine, this is very tragic for a family,” Nairn said. Barbara and Dennis were known for being social and their deaths have sent shockwaves through their community, with neighbours saying it was “one of those things you don’t face every day”. “Living in a courtyard like this you get to know people,” one neighbour said. “Very sorry for everyone. It’s one of those things you don’t face every day,” another said. The couple’s best friends of 30 years, who moved into a neighbouring unit to be close to them, were particularly affected. “We did a lot of things together as older people,” the couple said. “It’s a big shock to us… it’s hard to accept. “If you wanted to know anything you asked Dennis because he was a very bright person.” Dennis and Barbara’s friends also said Barbara has become increasingly unwell over the past four months. “She was very unwell and Dennis was very distressed about the whole situation, she’d been unwell for about three months,” one said. “It’s hard to accept that they’ve gone… I still can’t believe it.” A spokesperson for Lutheran Homes Group, which operates the retirement village, told the ABC the pair had been living independently in the unit where they were found, and that the village was offering both pastoral and counselling support for those who needed it. “Pastoral support is being offered to residents, as well as counselling support for staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our Glynde community at this difficult time,” they said. Hollywood actor spotted next to crime scene

Hollywood actor Dev Patel has been spotted speaking to police next to a crime scene in Adelaide. The Lion and Slumdog Millionaire actor, who lives in Adelaide with his Aussie girlfriend, was at Gouger Street in the Adelaide CBD around 8.45pm on Monday. Police were called following reports of a man and woman fighting in the street which then continued to a nearby service station. Witnesses attempted to break the pair up before the woman allegedly stabbed the man in the chest. Paramedics arrived and treated him at the scene before taking him to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. His injuries are not considered life threatening. Following investigations, police arrested a 34-year-old woman and charged her with aggravated assault causing harm. Battler fruit and veg market owner slams big chains for profit chasing

A local grocer has been hailed a hero after calling out Woolies and Coles for unnecessarily increasing the price of fruit and vegetables. Johnny Kapiris owns St Bernards Fruit and Veg Market in Rostrevor, Adelaide. He recorded an angry video of himself slamming the big chains for their ridiculous price hikes. "Every f**ker in Australia is using inflation for an excuse to jack their f**king prices up," he said. "You know why? Because they're money-hungry f**ks". Johnny went on to show the prices of some of his products he selling with mandarins for just 99 cents a kilo, bananas for 99 cents a kilo and a punnet of strawberries for $4.99 The prices of these products at a Coles or Woolies supermarket go for $2.80 a kilo, $3.50 a kilo and $6.50 a punnet respectively. Johnny admitted that inflation is being factored into the increased prices, as well as expensive fuel and the recent flooding. But he argues that the big supermarkets can afford to lower their prices and accept a lower profit just as he has done instead of keeping their shareholders happy. "Inflation is real but some people are playing on it,” he said. “There's plenty of specials you can put on to bring the basket spend down, which I believe they [supermarket chains] are not doing." "There are only a handful of us who are really interested in our customers." Despite accepting less profits, Johnny is being rewarded in a way that no other person can be - by having loyal customers coming back. "We're a family owned business and we're hands-on in the shop. A renovated rental apartment has received a flood of attention for all the wrong reasons. The newly listed studio apartment in North Adelaide has caused a nationwide stir online, with many slamming the bizarrely designed rental renovation as “real life satire.” The studio not only features a kitchen with no oven, but a giant glass walled bathroom wedged between the living area and kitchen. The bathroom only comes with a glimpse of privacy in the form of a metre wide section of frosted glass. Police officer called a hypocrite for defect on car

A police officer who pulled over a man riding a defective motorbike has been called a hypocrite for having a smooth tyre. Theo Glibo was stopped by the police officer at a service station in Largs Bay, Adelaide for having an illegal blue light on his motorbike. The 24-year-old then spotted the officer’s front tyre which was “bald” and questioned why he was being ticketed while the car should also be unroadworthy. “I’m copping a defect and this cop has a bald tyre and he’s not even gonna defect his own car,” Theo said in his video. “I’m not going to put a sticker on it for something that’s going to be dealt with tomorrow,” the officer responded. “Why not? That’s what you’re doing with mine, you’re a hypocrite,” Theo continued. ”If this was anybody else’s tyre, you’d defect it. Where’s the wear bar on that?” The officer agreed that Theo was right and that he would deal with his tyre when his shift ended. “You’re absolutely right, so I will defect that when I get back to my office,” the officer said. Mother of "stolen" four-month-old baby speaks out

The mother of a four-month-old baby who was the accidental victim of a kidnapping has spoken out, revealing her own devastating childhood and her "wrong" split decision. Young mum Erika Carter had the fright of her life earlier this week when her <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/finance/legal/man-arrested-after-stealing-car-with-baby-inside" target="_blank" rel="noopener">car was stolen</a> from the north Adelaide suburb of Klemzig, with her son Jordan in the backseat. After a desperate two hour search from local police, Jordan was found safe in the car, which had since been abandoned, and was taken to hospital as a precaution. Speaking for the first time since the incident to 7News, Erika said she made the "wrong decision" by leaving her baby in the car alone while she went to pick up some essentials at the shops. “I went for a quick trip to get a loaf of bed and made the wrong decision to leave bubs for that split second,” she said. “And as I was paying for my bread, I heard my car rev and my heart just sunk." “I sprinted out after my baby boy and tried my best to get in front, but I couldn’t get to him, I was just yelling, ‘my baby, my baby Jordan’ and I thought the worst.” Carter said it was “the longest few hours of her life” as the police searched for Jordan. <div> “It’s sad we live in a world where we can’t trust what’s around us, and we can’t feel safe,” she said. “You just think, ‘give me my baby boy back, take whatever you want’, if that’s what it takes.” In a shocking coincidence, Erika revealed that she was also abducted when she was just 11 years old. “I got followed as I was walking my mum’s dog, and I was grabbed and put into a car,” she said. “But I wasn’t taken like Jordan was,” she explained. “My dog bit the abductor, and I managed to unlock the passenger’s door and get out." “But that took me years to get over.” Erika said her abductor was never caught.
