MasterChef UK host lashes out at wave of complaints

MasterChef UK host Gregg Wallace has lashed out at “middle-class women of a certain age” for making complaints about him in a bizarre online rant.

The TV host has stepped back from the program after an investigation was launched into his alleged misconduct over a number of years.

The controversy first came to light following a report by The Sun, which detailed accusations that Wallace, 60, made "inappropriate sexual comments" to a female BBC staffer during his time on Impossible Celebrities. He has also faced claims of being rude and insulting to women on another program in 2023.

After denying the allegations, Wallace launched into a heated tirade in an Instagram post, hitting back at the people he believes first complained about his conduct.

Wallace said on Instagram, “I have been doing MasterChef for 20 years – amateur, celebrity and professional MasterChef and I think in that time I have worked with over 4,000 contestants of all different ages, all different backgrounds and all walks of life."

“And apparently now I am reading in the paper there’s been 13 complaints in that time.

“In the newspaper I can see the complaints coming from a handful of middle-class women of a certain age just from Celebrity MasterChef. This isn’t right."

“In over 20 years of television, can you imagine how many women, female contestants, on MasterChef have made sexual remarks or sexual innuendo, can you imagine?”

“Do you know how many staff, all different sorts of staff, made a complaint about me in that time. Absolutely none. Zero. Seriously.”

Wallace's rant comes after Sir Rod Stewart called out the TV host in the wake of the allegations, accusing him of humiliating his wife, Penny Lancaster, during her appearance on Celebrity MasterChef in 2021.

Stewart wrote, “Good riddance Wallace... You humiliated my wife when she was on the show, but you had that bit cut out didn’t you? You’re a tubby, bald-headed, ill-mannered bully. Karma got ya.”

Wallace has denied the allegations and stated that a previous investigation by the BBC six years ago cleared him of any wrongdoing. He insisted his comments were not sexual in nature, saying, "I don’t want anybody to misunderstand this and make it look like I was flirting with somebody. Nobody accused me of that, and I never have."

Banijay UK, the production company behind MasterChef, confirmed the investigation into "historical allegations" and stated they are cooperating fully with the BBC. A BBC spokesperson said the corporation is commited to addressing any behaviour falling below its expected standards: “We take any issues that are raised with us seriously and have robust processes in place to deal with them... We will always support external production companies when addressing complaints or concerns.”

"This is crazy": MasterChef Australia 2024 winner crowned

MasterChef Australia has crowned its 2024 winner!

Nat Thaipun has emerged as the winner of the coveted title and took home a whopping $250,000.

In the intense finale, the final two contestants Josh Perry and Nat Thaipun had 75 minutes to cook up something spectacular for the judges using black peppercorns as the key ingredient.

While Perry went with a rib-eye with some brussels sprouts and peppercorn sauce, with a spin on the vegees and some pureed sauce, Thaipun went with a Thai twist on a hearty pub meal, the scotch egg.

In the first round, Thapun managed to secure a total of 36/40, while Perry walked away from round one with 33/40.

In the second round, the contestants were asked to recreate renowned British chef Claire Smith's "Core-teaser", an incredibly detailed version of the classic Malteaser, with 113 steps to follow.

Both contestants struggled with the dessert, but Perry ended up struggling the most with one of the dish's key elements which resulted in his malt sugar ball going "pear-shaped".

Perry "absolutely nailed it" despite missing an element of the dessert, and Thaipun was "pretty bang on" with the flavours of the dish, but the judges thought her texture was off.

Despite this, it was the extra points in the first round that gave Thaipun the advantage of winning the show.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; MasterChef judges tear up during emotional tribute to Jock Zonfrillo

The judges on MasterChef Australia have teared up as they paid tribute to their "late great mate" Jock Zonfrillo.

During the beginning of Finals Week on the cooking show, the contestants and judges began discussing their "food heroes", who would inspire their dishes for the upcoming challenge in the kitchen.

While many contestants shared stories about their family members being their inspiration, judge Andy Allen took a moment to pay tribute to the late MasterChef judge Jock Zonfrillo.

He opened up about everything the late chef instilled in him, and quickly began welling up as his fellow judges rallied around him.

“My food hero is my late great mate Jock,” he said, as tears began to form in his eyes.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by MasterChef Australia (@masterchefau)

“The time that we spent cooking in this kitchen and creating an energy where people like you could just reach for the stars and succeed in everything you do."

As fellow judge Poh Ling-Yeow placed her hand on his shoulder, he continued, “I learned so much about that from Jock and he taught me so much about being a good husband and being a good son, and one day hopefully being a good dad. Poh reveals birthday plans for her big 5-0

Aside from her cooking skills, MasterChef's Poh Ling Yeow is also known for her “ageless beauty” and this year, the beloved cook is gearing up for a double celebration.

“My 50th birthday falls close to Christmas, and my dad wants to combine the two celebrations this year,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

Poh told the publication that she opted to merge her birthday celebration and Christmas festivities in an effort to make the holiday season “stress-free” for her and her loved ones.

“The key to a stress-free Christmas is reducing your personal workload, and I can’t think of a better way to get into the festive spirit than sharing preparations for the big day with family. It’s always potluck at the Yeow family Christmas!”

And as you'd expect from a seasoned chef, this year's menu consists of a few of her own “centrepiece mains”.

Her other tip for reader's at home hoping to make Christmas more stress-free is to ask guests to bring a side or dessert.

“I love a grated beet, chickpea and mint salad with white balsamic that’s full of crunch and almost like a pickle,” she said.

"Also, a Thai roast chicken and glass vermicelli salad, and a Korean japchae (sweet potato noodle salad).

“My family, bless them, loves a proper retro trifle. It starts with making finger jello by adding 1 tablespoon of powdered gelatine to a raspberry or strawberry jelly so you can easily cut them into cubes after it’s set."

She then shared her tip for making the trifle.

“Then it’s just a matter of layering sliced, store-bought jam rollettes drowned in regular strawberry jelly mixture, tinned peaches, fresh strawberries, custard made with powdered custard mix, fresh cream then piling on the prepared jelly cubes.”

Images: Yahoo Lifestyle

MasterChef finalist jailed for 24 years

Paul Douglas Frost, a former finalist on MasterChef Australia, has been ordered to serve a minimum of 24 years in prison – up to a maximum of 32 years – for 43 sexual offences he against 11 children that he committed during his time working as a Sydney swim coach.

It's been over four years since Frost's arrest, and now the verdict – delivered by Judge Sarah Huggett at Downing Centre District Court in Sydney – sees justice for his crimes that occurred over a period of ten years and involved children as young as ten years old.

Judge Huggett made special mention of the “escalating gravity and brazenness” of Frost's crimes against his victims, the youngest of whom was nine or 10 years old when the abuse began, while the oldest was molested until the age of 16.

Huggett also made it clear in her ruling that Frost had shown no remorse for his actions, while dismissing character references that portrayed him as a protector of young people.

“There is no evidence that would permit me to find on balance that he is contrite or remorseful,” she told the court. Frost appeared in court not in person, but via video link from Shortland Correctional Centre, and showed little to no reaction throughout Judge Huggett's sentencing.

The majority of Frost’s crimes occurred at a swimming school in southwest Sydney, and testimonies from his victims outlined the depth of Frost’s manipulation, encouraging explicit discussions about sex and masturbation, which eventually led to inappropriate physical contact.

The court was also told of Frost's tendency to coerce his victims into remaining silent after the assaults. Judge Huggett also said that Frost’s offences were “opportunistic, impulsive and spontaneous,” which helped him to create an environment that made the discussion of explicit matters appear normal to his victims.

Judge Huggett said Frost, who was in his 20s when the crimes were comitted, “created opportunities for him to be alone” with the victims. “In addition to manipulating the victims, he manipulated the parents who trusted him with their children."

Frost’s earliest possible release date is June 3, 2047. He is currently being held in protective custody following an assault in July at Shortland Correctional Centre.

Images: Network 10

Matt Preston unveils all in new memoir

MasterChef icon Matt Preston has spilled it all in his new memoir Big Mouth.

Speaking to news.com.au to promote his new memoir, the former MasterChef judge revealed the story behind the “secret hand gesture” he made on-screen.

“The first four years of MasterChef were shot in Sydney and my family lived in Melbourne,” he explained.

“So I had to find ways when she was watching the show, of letting her know that she was there.

“At that point, I used to wear two wedding rings on my left hand, so during tastings I would twist the ring on my finger … so that she could watch and know that I wasn’t just lost in some strange MasterChef celebrity bubble but I was actually remembering her.”

He also revealed a few behind the scenes secrets about MasterChef, including the tension between him and fellow judge Gary Mehigan in the first season.

“You have to understand that there is a fundamental cobra versus mongoose relationship between food critics and restaurateurs,” he explained,

He added that things might have been “a little frosty” between them because of a review he had written about one of Mehigan's restaurants in the past.

“I’m the guy who came to Gary’s restaurant, The Boathouse, and had a wobbly table and wrote about how wobbly my table was. He wasn’t happy.

“So there was a certain amount of professional suspicion, shall we say,” he laughed.

However, the pair have figured things out and Preston now considers Mehigan as “one of my most trusted friends”.

Preston also answered the one question viewers always ask in every season: “Don’t the dishes go cold before the judges have a chance to taste them?”

“We had a number of strategies to ensure that we could see the food in its best form,” Preston told the outlet.

One of those strategies was getting the contestants to make a second dish after the challenge ended, and tasting that first.

“We’d taste that in a speed tasting before we did the main tasting,” Preston said. “We would go around and look at things like how high the souffle had risen and were the chips crispy.”

“We were wandering around the whole time, you could see us in the back of each shot, poking into pots and tasting,” he said.

“All you’re trying to do is make the playing field for the contestants as even as possible.”

The memoir will be released on November 7 and also explores Preston's adoption, his fractured childhood and a few family tragedies.

Images: Getty

Melissa Leong axed just weeks ahead of filming

In an unexpected turn of events, Channel Ten's beloved cooking show, MasterChef Australia, is set to undergo a significant makeover in 2024. The series, which has captured the hearts of food enthusiasts and reality TV aficionados alike, will introduce a new judging panel, leaving fans both excited and apprehensive.

Melissa Leong, a fan favourite who joined the MasterChef family in 2019 alongside Andy Allen and Jock Zonfrillo, finds herself stepping away from the iconic show. Her arrival was part of a pivotal change in the program after the departure of original judges Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan, and George Calombaris due to a pay dispute. Sadly, the show faced another devastating loss with the sudden passing of Jock Zonfrillo earlier this year, leaving a void that needed to be filled.

According to sources reported by the Australian Financial Review, Leong was made aware of this transition only recently, just a month before the new season began filming. The Australian public, deeply attached to the familiar faces they've come to love on the show, was left wondering about the future of MasterChef.

The Daily Telegraph broke the news that the new judging panel would include former contestant Poh Ling Yeow, Michelin-starred chef Jean-Christophe Novelli, and food critic Sofia Levin. While these newcomers bring their own expertise and charm to the MasterChef stage, they must face the challenge of filling the shoes of their predecessors and winning over the show's passionate audience.

Andy Allen, who has been a part of the MasterChef journey since 2012, made the surprising decision to return to the series after what he described as a "difficult year" in 2023. Speaking about his choice, Allen said, "There is something special in the MasterChef Australia Kitchen, and it feels right to come back to work with the amazing production team, and to play my role in seeing the contestants do as I have done." With the new line-up, 2024 promises to be the beginning of a fresh chapter in the show's history.

Notably, there were rumours that celebrity chef Jamie Oliver might join the show as a replacement. However, it appears that the production team opted for a mix of MasterChef alumni and culinary expertise to usher in this new era.

Leong's connection with Channel Ten remains strong, as she is set to host Dessert Masters, alongside the pastry prodigy Amaury Guichon, known as "The Chocolate Guy". This spinoff series promises to showcase the skills of Australia's top pastry chefs and dessert makers through sweet-themed challenges. Dessert enthusiasts can anticipate an exciting showdown between some of the country's finest dessert creators.

A Network 10 spokesperson has clarified that the decision was not influenced by any ongoing investigation and that Leong will continue to be a cherished member of the MasterChef Australia family. The spokesperson stated, "Melissa is set to return for a second season of Dessert Masters in 2024, alongside fellow judge and pastry prodigy Amaury Guichon." The scheduling of both programs, with MasterChef and Dessert Masters airing back-to-back, called for each show to have its distinct style, personality and hosting team.

As fans eagerly await the new season of MasterChef Australia in 2024, there is a mix of anticipation and nostalgia. The departure of a beloved judge and the introduction of fresh faces signal a new chapter in the show's legacy.

Image: MasterChef Australia

Sneaky zoom call hints at secret new MasterChef style project

Hold onto your spatulas – the culinary world just got a sneak peek into the top-secret virtual rendezvous of the original MasterChef judging squad, and let's just say, the excitement is sizzling hotter than a pan of frying bacon.

Celebrity chef and all-around food wizard George Calombaris shook the internet like a well-shaken cocktail when he decided to share a teensy snippet of a recent clandestine Zoom chat with his former kitchen companions, Gary Mehigan and Matt Preston.

And although the video quality was about as polished as a well-worn wooden spoon, it was the content that had tongues immediately wagging as Preston playfully poked Calombaris about his dessert tastes being as "daggy" as a dad joke at a barbecue. And George, bless his apron-wrapped heart, heartily agreed: "The daggier, the better. As daggy as we are on this Zoom call," he clapped back.

Captioned with all the mystery of a burrito's secret ingredients, the post read, "Some serious food talk for a very special project. But mostly just a lot of shots and giggles." Shots, giggles, and maybe a sprinkle of culinary magic – sounds like our kind of party.

Since its release, the post has gone viral, racking up more views than there are slices in a pizza and comments flowing in like a chocolate fountain at a dessert buffet.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by George Calombaris (@gcalombaris)

Just in case you've been marooned on a desert island with nothing but spam and a can opener, let's rewind a bit. George, Gary, and Matt were the original trio of culinary divinities who ruled MasterChef with their tastebuds and witty repartee for an entire decade.

Fast forward to 2019 when the MasterChef cosmos decided to shift its cosmic culinary alignment, and boom! The trio was out, leaving fans with their mouths agape, much like when you taste-test something expecting sugar but get salt instead. CEO Paul Anderson cited "unsatisfactory commercial agreement negotiations" at the time – it's like a fancy way of saying, "We couldn't agree on the paycheck, folks."

Rumour had it, that the judges asked for a 40% raise, basically demanding a pile of dough the size of a well-risen soufflé, to the tune of $1.5 million each for just one more season. Talk about giving the term "food for thought" a whole new meaning.

And what's life been like after the MasterChef limelight? Well, Preston had a brush with reality TV stardom in Dancing With The Stars, but his dance moves were as graceful as a turkey trying to tango. Then, there's Gary and Matt, who teamed up for a show called Plate of Origin, which sadly got served a big ol' rejection slip by the audience.

And let's not forget George – his restaurant group got slapped with a whopping $200,000 fine for underpaying staff to the tune of $7.8 million. But they did fess up and pay up, so it's not all choppy waters in this seafood feast.

In a podcast confessional, George shared, “We found the issue, we owned up, we paid back. A lot of the story that people don’t write about because it’s not cool enough or doesn’t get a headline is that we actually overpaid 49 per cent of our workforce that we never asked the money back for, and I wouldn’t of. I think the tough thing for me was, I thought by owning up, it’s the right thing to do, that’s how I grew up. So for me, that was probably the thing that hurt the most, being called a ‘thief’. I’m proud of how we acted, I’m proud of what we did to fix the problem.”

So, following the leaked Zoom call, a sprinkle of kitchen drama and a trio of culinary legends ready to sauté their way into a new foodie escapade, it appears there is nothing left for us to do but stay tuned with our daggiest dessert forks at the ready.

Images: Instagram

George Calombaris bans "racist" diner

Celebrity chef George Calombaris has publicly slammed a diner's "racist" review of his Victorian restaurant, The Hellenic House Project, and banned them from visiting his business.

The diner left a negative Google review of the restaurant yesterday, claiming that it was the "Worst 'non' dining experience ever!"

The diner claimed they had to wait six weeks for a booking to arrive at the first sitting, and had issues with the manager who they ordered food from.

They alleged that after 45 minutes of waiting for their food to arrive, they had to find a waiter themselves and was told the manager had "forgot" to put in the order.

"Typically, we weren't offered any compensation except that our food would be out in 5 mins. Which it wasn't. I should've realised it was going to be a disaster when I had to ask for the menu after 10 [minutes]," wrote the customer.

"Like others, we've dined in many, many restaurants and were keen to try this 'authentic Greek' experience. It was far from it.

"Practically none of the staff were Greek (including' the Manager who was of Indian descent) and the menu didn't reflect what has been posted online. Calombaris - this place is a joke and you've certainly got a few people fooled," they concluded.

They gave a one out of five star rating for everything.

The celebrity chef hit back at the scathing review by posting a screenshot of it on Instagram with the caption: "Won't lie. I am 99 percent a very positive human. But this is horrible.

"Yes. We made a mistake with your order. We are humans. And yes my manager is Indian. You know who you are guys. “Far out… I did it”: MasterChef winner crowned!

Brent Draper has been announced as MasterChef Australia’s winner!

Brent was a returning contestant who had previously withdrawn from the 2021 season of MasterChef, after revealing that he was struggling with his mental health.

For the first round the pair had to make “a dish that tells a story,” a challenge that was set by judge Melissa Leong.

Both contestants presented a dish with a pork base, with Brent opting for a pork chop with tamarind ketchup glaze, roast cabbage and salsa, which the judges deemed “perfectly executed”.

He scored a near perfect 29 out of 30.

Rhiannon went next whipping up a crispy pork belly dish with citrus caramel, fennel and orange salad and crispy shallots.

Although judge Andy Allen called it “the best-looking plate” she’d presented all season, she also received some criticism mainly that she was a bit stingy with the sauce.

She scored 25 out of 30.

The second and final round was more intense as the pair had to recreate a pocket watch dessert made up of layers of coffee, cream and cake.

Both contestants struggled with making the clear “glass” sugar dome that sits on top of the cake. While Rhiannon nailed it after two attempts, Brent couldn’t quite do the same after running out of time, so he had to present a final dish he thought he’d “stuffed up.”

Although his dish was less than perfect, Brent did a “very good job” at recreating the textures and flavours of the cake, which impressed pastry chef Amaury Guichon.

Rhiannon’s dish failed to impress the judges with Amaury saying that the “textures are all over the place,” which Mel Leong agreed was an issue as it meant “we lose the joy of the dish.”

In the end Brent scored 34 points in round two and Rhiannon scored 27.

Brent redeemed himself after withdrawing from season 13 of the show, with a final score of 63.

Rhiannon did her best and had a final score of 52 points.

The finale of this year’s MasterChef ended with an extended tribute to Jock Zonfrillo, which showed a highlight reel from his time as a judge and the message: “Give it up for Jock Zonfrillo.”

The season 15 MasterChef winner took to his Instagram to share his joy and tribute to Zonfrillo.

“Far out… I did it,” he captioned the post.

“This is a big win but it isn’t just for me. World famous chefs in the running to replace Jock Zonfrillo

Channel Ten is on the hunt for a new judge to join the MasterChef Australia team, two months after the shocking death of Jock Zonfrillo.

Several world-famous chefs are set to be in the running to join Melissa Leong and Andy Allen, with many prospects appearing on the show as guests before.

"International names such as Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson and Shannon Bennett have all been thrown around," an insider told Woman's Day.

Despite the hopes for these chefs to join the cast, the insider said their intense schedules has made booking them for the competitive cooking show "a pipe dream".

The network is also reported to be considering bringing back "heritage" names to the show, such as original judges George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan, to attract older viewers.

Despite the discussions of Zonfrillo's replacement, rumours have also circulated that Leong and Allen may continue on as co-hosts of the show without a third colleague.

The Herald Sun reported that the cooking duo may instead go into the next season alongside a rotating roster of guest judges.

Meanwhile, others have suggested Melissa, 41, and Andy, 35, may be planning to quit MasterChef as they continue to grapple with the tragic death of their co-star.

Some fans are convinced the entire hosting panel may be replaced altogether, after Channel Ten refused to confirm Jock's replacement in the recent casting call.

The popular cooking show was thrown into disarray after Jock Zonfrillo's devastating death on April 30th, the day the newest season of MasterChef was due to air, with the premiere of the show being delayed a week after his passing.
