Derryn Hinch confirms next big career move

Former Senator for Victoria and radio personality Derryn Hinch has revealed that he will be running for Lord Mayor of Melbourne this year.

A formal announcement will be made once he has found his deputy candidate.

The 80 year-old shock jock told the Herald Sun that he wanted to “get the city back on its feet” and fix problems with the city’s “woke council”.

He also told 3AW, the radio show he used to host, that he was planning to run with the slogan “Make Melbourne Magnificent”.

“We used to be so proud of this place,” he said. “Let’s do some things that’ll make us proud again.

“I’ve been getting hundreds of emails and Facebook posts with a lot of good ideas from people on what they’d like to see changed.”

He added that he would reveal further details on his policies later, but has said that one of the things he'd like to change is the graffiti in the city, which he believes “needs to be totally wiped out” and "tough penalties" should be given when people are caught.

"I have no illusions … that it’s gonna be hard work,” he said. “I’ll be doing my best to win”.

He also said he wanted to investigate if property owned by the city council can be converted into further Melbourne housing.

Hinch also said that he is looking for a female running mate who has state or council experience.

The shock jock speculated that he would be running against Sally Capp, the current Lord Mayor of Melbourne, who has been in the role of Lord Mayor for two terms over six years, and may run again in October.

Hinch has been in journalism for 63 years and moved into politics in 2015. He served as Senator for Victoria from 2016 to 2019, and only dissolved his party last year.

Image: Getty

We both hosted the Midday show.

“She’s a cockroach,” he continued. “If a nuclear war hit your television studio, you may go Sarah, but I bet you KAK will still be there.”

Did we just mend a decades long TV feud between #KAK and @HumanHeadline? #Studio10 pic.twitter.com/OEy6rkuJd4
— Studio 10 (@Studio10au) March 31, 2020

Harris replied, “Derryn, I don’t think she took it as a compliment”.

It was at that point that Kennerley rushed onto set and confronted Hinch who was joining the program via Skype.

“You wrote in your book I was ‘the television equivalent of a cockroach,’ yes, I’m really flattered,” said Kennerley, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

“Alright, take it like you want,” said Hinch.

Hinch revealed that Kennerley had raised the comment with him previously when they bumped into one another overseas, and he repeated that he meant it as a compliment.

“Don’t ask me to thank you now,” Kennerley said sternly.

The cockroach comment wasn’t the only one that had rubbed Kennerley the wrong way.

The Studio 10 co-host then said to Hinch: “I will forgive you when you apologise for banging on for years after Midday because you thought you did better.”

Hinch hosted Midday on Channel 9 in 1994 for one year before the show was axed. “I was being bullied and shut down”: Pauline Hanson lashes out at Kochie and Sunrise team

Pauline Hanson has not held back as she has delivered a three-minute video on her Facebook page outlining her treatment on the breakfast show Sunrise.

Yesterday saw Hanson and presenter David Koch get into an argument about whether or not her party’s rhetoric is like the one involved in the 87-page manifesto of the shooter in the Christchurch attacks.

Derryn Hinch was also on the Sunrise segment and didn’t give Hanson a chance to explain her argument.

In the video, she seems to speak directly to her audience.

“Your comments suggested you thought I was being bullied and shut down, it was an ambush,” Hanson said with anger.

“I felt that way too because I haven't been able to explain myself properly and answer the questions. I know how you feel because you feel exactly the same way and you feel you don't have a voice.”

Hanson then goes on to question whether or not Kochie has read her party’s immigration policies.

“Do they really understand? I don't think they do. They're quick to criticise me but when I get out and speak to people, I know how you feel because I feel exactly the same way,' she said.

“People in our society are in fear of the ever-changing society that we live in. I do not condone the terrorist attack.”

“My heartfelt sympathies go out to the people who have lost their lives and their loved ones, the same as I did for all of the other terrorist attacks that happened throughout the world,” Ms Hanson said.

“My comments are purely based on let's find the reasons behind these terrorist attacks. Don't shut down debate. Give the people an opportunity to have their say.”

The video has since attracted more than 280,000 views and has many comments declaring their support for Hanson.

One commenter agreed saying, “They both owe you an apology. Don’t feed their egos anymore, refuse to appear on Sunrise until they publicly apologise to you”.

Another said that they now know why their partner stopped watching Sunrise.

“My partner refuses to watch Sunrise because of Kochie. Never took much notice. Today I realised why. He wasn’t doing his job properly. It wasn’t his place to debate.”

Many were quick to commend Hanson for not losing control.

“You did good girl, those two should be ashamed of themselves,” one commenter said.

Did you watch the Sunrise segment yesterday? What did you think? Let us know in the comments below.

“Torture device”: Derryn Hinch says vaginal mesh recipients were “kept in the dark”

Victorian Senator Derryn Hinch has made a passionate plea at the senate inquiry into the use of vaginal mesh to treat urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, which has left thousands of women with life-changing physical damage and pain.

After the senate committee made the recommendation that vaginal mesh only be used as a last resort and only with fully informed consent, tabling a report with 13 suggested changes to its use, senators from all sides of politics agreed that such a devastating medical scandal can never happen again.

“Many women who have had transvaginal mesh implants have had devastating complications resulting in ongoing emotional trauma, embarrassment, shame, depression, debilitating pain, recurring infection and a poor quality of life,” Greens senator and committee chair, Rachel Siewert, said.

Senator Hinch said the committee had heard from many women who felt they had been let down by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

“Having first been told there’s only a one per cent chance of an adverse reaction, they have since been treated like mushrooms,” the Human Headline said.

“Kept in the dark and fed bulls*** by doctors, hospital administrators, the drug companies and sadly even the TGA.”

He described the tragedy as “the biggest medical scandal for Australian women since thalidomide in the 1950s and 1960s, when kids were born without arms and legs.”

Senator Hinch said people affected by this “torture device” deserve justice. “This should never have happened. We need to fix it. We need to be providing support for these women.”

Derryn Hinch suffers “brain trauma” after fall

Derryn Hinch is well and truly living up to his self-imposed Human Headline moniker, with News.com.au reporting the Australian senator has suffered from “brain trauma” after falling out of an Uber in Melbourne.

The 74-year-old pollie reportedly fell out of the car on St Kilda Road and was knocked unconscious, and was promptly taken to The Alfred Hospital for checks.

“I’d had two glasses of wine at dinner — I hadn’t overindulged. But it’s the obvious question with my background I don’t blame people for thinking that,” the former radio host said.

Hinch famously made a splash in 2016 when he announced he was “back on the booze” after swearing of alcohol when he received a lifesaving liver transplant in 2011.

9News.com.au reports a witness helped an Uber driver call an ambulance.

"He was out for a few minutes but he started to wake up as the paramedics arrived and we helped them get him on to a stretcher," the witness said.

“He didn’t have any obvious injury but he was pretty confused about what was happening."

The Human Headline put the fall down to a “dodgy knee” and tiredness, rather than the booze. He’s reportedly due to have further medical tests on Thursday.

The Human Headline put the fall down to a “dodgy knee” and tiredness, rather than the booze. Derryn Hinch’s shocking transformation

Derry Hinch has seen firsthand what he would look like if he were to “throw your life away on ice”.

The Australian Senator for Victoria and media personality underwent an ‘ice makeunder’ to see how an addiction to the drugs would alter his face.

As part of his investigation into life addicted to the drug, Hinch used the app Ice Effex to see what the long-term impact of ice would do to his appearance.

“It's spooky,” he said.

“The scary thing about Ice addicts, and I have met a few now, is they don't seem to see the scabs and the damage, they don’t see the rotted teeth."

Hinch added, “It's like anorexia, they don't see what they really look like.”

During an interview with a self-professed “casual” ice user, Hinch recalled the “very sad” experience as the man began smoking the drug while they were talking.

"He really is doing all that and thinking he is going out and having fun," Hinch said. "He's a young man and he's destroying his life."

The app Ice Effex was created by a Victorian couple, in the hope that it will alert a selfie-driven generation to the dangers of the drug.

Homelessness support workers Haydn Cooke and Trinity Lonel used the $40,000 they had set aside for a home deposit to build awareness of how damaging the effects of ice are through the app.

"The devastation and cost that one user has on a family and a community is huge," Haydn Cooke said. "Even if [the app] saves one kid or a couple of kids it will have been worth it."

During his time working at the Victorian regional Odyssey House rehab clinic, Cooke said he witnessed an explosion in ice use.

Cooke explained that he first got the idea for the app, which edits a selfie to show how a person would degenerate while using the drug, from his 13 and 16-year-old children.

"To sit with my son and say 'eat your veggies, it's good for your insides', they don’t give a stuff about that, they care what they look like," he said. "It's a really big deal to them at that age. We definitely involved them in the design because our target audience is 13 to 20-year-olds."

Launched in September, the app not only shows the effects of ice on the face after three, six and 12 months, but it also provides medical information about what is happening under the surface during this time.

Hinch believes the app is a good start in deterring people from using ice.

"The more we can educate kids the less chance there is they will start, that's key."

Cooke hopes the app will be shown in all schools across the country as a deterrent to methamphetamine use.

"It is about prevention and it has to start early."
