Deb Knight's 2GB replacement revealed

After four years as host of the 2GB Afternoons program, Deb Knight has been axed from the coveted role.

Knight's brutal dismissal comes after a noticeable decline in ratings, with Knight holding a mere six percent market share, as indicated by the latest radio ratings survey.

From January 15th next year, Deb will be replaced by Michael McLaren, as the 38-year-old presenter told Ben Fordham on on Thursday that he had "big boots to fill" but was excited to start the role.

"I am honoured to be doing it. There has been a rich and great legacy on 2GB for years and years on afternoons and most recently with Deb so it is big boots to fill," McLaren said.

"I am going to do my best."

The 38-year-old father added he is excited to bring his own niche interests and signature wit to the talkback show while covering the latest news and entertainment.

"We are going to do traditional afternoon radio, the open line will drive it," McLaren said.

"We will be across the news but we will also be across the entertainment things. My interests are sort of a little esoteric at times – I like the history stuff so we will have plenty of that."

"I am told I have a dry sense of humour so I will bring that hopefully to the table as well."

According to The Sunday Telegraph, Knight reportedly felt "shattered" after Nine Radio informed her earlier this month that she would be axed as host after her four year stint.

Knight was told of the decision just one week before the news was broken to the public, but shared that she would not be leaving the network for good, as she will be taking up a new role as the national host of Money News.

"I am stepping back as host of afternoons. I am not, however, leaving 2GB. In fact I'm taking on a new broader network role," she said.

"I have missed too many school drop offs and pick ups over the years, I do often put work first. So I'm very much looking forward to being able to be here a lot more for my family."

High-profile 2GB host missing feared dead

Roman Butchaski, known as “Butch” from the 2GB Fishing Show, has been missing since Sunday and is feared to be dead after police found his belongings near croc-infested waters.

The radio host disappeared while solo-fishing on a river bank in The Cape York Peninsula, in north Queensland.

On Tuesday morning, journalist Harry Clark told 2GB's Ben Fordham that Butch's fishing gear had been found, after three days of major search and rescue operations.

“The latest is that the search finished yesterday afternoon and there are air and land searches scheduled to continue again this morning,” Clark told Fordham.

“He borrowed a buggy from a friend (and) travelled about an hour to go fishing along the banks of the Olive River.

"All that they’ve found of Butch is that vehicle and a few personal effects such as a fishing rod that was found on Sunday afternoon, and he hasn’t been seen since.

“The Olive River is a tidal saltwater river and like all waterways in that area they are known crocodile habitats so that's certainly one of things search crews are taking into consideration as they look for Butch.”

Butch was last seen at 8am on Sunday, and was reported missing when he didn’t return home from the fishing trip.

“Emergency services were called to the area late last night night after he failed to return,” Queensland Police said on Monday.

“Additional officers are travelling from Bamaga this morning to assist.”

Image: 2GB/ Pema Tamang Pakhrin/ news.com.au

Lilie James' grandmother has spoken out for the first time since her granddaughter's tragic death.

The 21-year-old water polo coach was found dead with severe head wounds in the gym bathroom of St Andrew’s Cathedral School on the 25th of October.

On Monday, her grieving grandmother Barbara spoke with 2GB radio host Ben Fordham to share an emotional tribute.

“I remember the day she was born, bright as a button coming out and never stopped since then,” she told Fordham.

“Just kept learning and having fun. She had a lot of fun, Lilie, and she was so kind.

“Some people come into this world – I think they are so special, and they don’t stay long, and I think that was my granddaughter.”

St Andrew’s Cathedral School will hold a special assembly in honour of James on Monday, with students expected to return to the school for the first time since her passing.

Barbara's statement comes just days after James' family issued a statement thanking the community for their support during these tough times.

“We are devastated and heartbroken by the loss of our beautiful Lilie James,” they said in the official statement released at the time.

“She was vibrant, outgoing, and very much loved by her family and friends.

"We are tremendously grateful for the support of our community at this difficult time."

Images: Facebook

Ben Fordham spills on worst gift he ever gave his wife

Coming up with a surprise is already a hard enough task, but Ben Fordham might’ve been a bit too creative when he planned this hilarious gift for his wife Jodie Speers.

The 2GB radio host shamefully - and hilariously - spilled the tea on the "one-of-a-kind" gift he got for his wife on the latest episode of He Said She Said with Shelly Horton.

Fordham recalled visiting a building site with their three children and letting them spray-paint parts of the building, including an old toilet.

He then decided to bring the painted toilet home as a surprise, which ultimately, didn’t impress his wife.

"Jodie didn't like it, and so she said, 'Get it out of the house,'" he told Horton.

Fordham admitted that it stayed in the "corner of the backyard for about a year" before he got rid of it.

He tried to hilariously justify his thought process, "I thought she'd think it was cute, it was painted by her children, her flesh and blood!"

Horton quipped that this was "possibly one of the worst presents I've ever heard of."

The radio host then shared that he and his wife usually "tip each other off" about the gifts that they want, but they occasionally try to surprise each other.

Both hosts eventually came to the conclusion that "experiences" are excellent gifts for long-term couples who already have "everything."

Images: Instagram/9Honey

Chris Smith reveals he was moments away from taking his life

Chris Smith said he “made arrangements” to take his own life before his young daughter stepped in and prevented him from doing so.

The reason behind these "arrangements" came from his behaviour at the Sky News’ Christmas party.

Smith hosted his first segment with independent broadcaster on TNT Radio as he tries to restart his media career after being fired from Sky News following his embarrassing behaviour at their Christmas Party.

The radio giant was let go from the two broadcasters after making offensive comments to one young female colleague about her holiday photos, also pinching another female colleague on the bottom during the network’s end-of-year celebrations in Sydney.

Smith returned to radio, getting candid about his suicidal thoughts and about how he had long dealt with the “untold heartache” of alcoholism.

He said he contemplated taking his own life after hearing about the way he treated the two women, but also said it “wasn't the worst of crimes”.

“Now when I was told what happened at that event the next day, I went into a deep dive, I was in shock,” he said.

“I was heartbroken. I instantly knew of the endless humiliating coverage that was to come. I instantly knew about the hurt that would fall upon my family, my kids, myself.

“I instantly knew of the pain, embarrassment and loss that I just incurred and I became suicidal.

“That Sunday morning at about 10.30 am I made preparations to take my life and if not for the intervention of my 19-year-old daughter, I would not be here today.”

Smith also said he was subject to “eight days of endless harsh media coverage”, which he had previously claimed was worse than what Chris Dawson, who murdered his wife, faced.

“Despite being rushed to a mental health ward, it was open season on me,” he said.

“No regard for mental health from the media in my case, maybe because my state was self-induced.

“The vitriol, if I'd read it, heard it or seen it - and I didn't - it would have tipped me over the edge.

“I think everyone in the media, including myself, needs to think about that the next time we cover a story that involves a human being looking down the barrel of rock bottom.”

Smith mentioned he grew up seeing the negative effects of alcohol and lived in a home where it was “used and abused”.

“It led to destruction and untold heartache, but that didn't stop me abusing alcohol,” he said.

“You might argue "well hang on, didn't you see it for yourself? You should have stayed clear of it.”

“I should have, I didn't. I've had a problem with it for most of my adult life.”

He shared that his alcoholism didn’t make him an all-day drinker, but he would “binge drink” whenever he had the chance.

He explained that the bipolar medication he was taking at the time of the Christmas party can cause “blackouts” when mixed with heavy drinking.

“At the Christmas party in Sydney late last year, I was determined to turn up for the first time in five years and prove to myself I could control this behaviour,” he said.

“But I crashed again, drank way too much, hit that black wall pinched a colleague on the backside and remarked to another woman how revealing her holiday photos were.

“I have reached out to both colleagues involved to personally apologise but as a result I lost my television show, my 22-year job at the radio station, my contributors role at Channel Nine and a massive amount of money.

“I'm not sugarcoating it, I'm not embellishing it, I'm just telling the truth. My inability to control drinking crash tackled me again and I am human.”

Smith went on to say he would never have acted the way he did at the party if he were sober and scrutinised the media for making him out to be the villain.

“I have no recollection of these events. Now that doesn't excuse me but it's not what I do in a conscious sober state. Only heavy drinkers listening would understand,” he said.

“Alcoholism, even of this kind, is a disease. That's a medical fact but for some reason, some commentators think they know better.

“To think someone like me would be evil and deliberately do what I did... It is not me and only those who know me well would understand what I'm saying.

“I'm not evil. None of this was deliberate. I suffer from a disease I could not control.”

He ended his segment by saying he was able to overcome his alcoholism while checked into a private rehabilitation facility “with the help of two psychiatrists, a terrific psychologist and their staff.”

“It had to end and I had to get help ending it,” he said.

“I have begun the exorcism. I'm 79 days sober today. I never ever thought that was possible.

“Of course it hasn't come without blood, sweat and tears. The first 30 days were a nightmare.

“It's only now that I've hit rock bottom, I wish I'd done it 20 years earlier.”

He thanked his loyal fans that stuck around while he was dealing with his mental health, and promised to continue bettering himself.

“I am human. I have made some gross mistakes. I don't think you can kick me much more,” he said.

“But the real me, the sober me, the clean me is worth backing and can be trusted. I will not let you down in that way ever again.”

Don't go it alone. Ray Hadley blasts Chris Smith as he is fired by 2GB

Chris Smith has been fired by 2GB after his actions at the Sky News Christmas party saw female staffers come forward with allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

The radio and TV host is on a suspension from Sky News, as his now former colleague Ray Hadley condemned his behaviour and expressed his desire to never work with him again.

In terminating his employment, Nine's Managing Director of Radio, Tom Malone said, "Chris' behaviour represents a serious breach of his contract, and is not aligned with the values of 2GB."

He says the media company provided support to Smith in recent days, and will continue to offer that support as required.

His firing follows prominent broadcaster Ray Hadley delivering a searing judgement of Smith's drunken behaviour.

Hadley described Smith, 60, as "a disgraceful person" after he allegedly made lewd comments at the end of year party, reducing a female co-worker to tears.

Following the allegations of abuse, Chris Smith released a statement about his actions and apologised for making female colleagues feel uncomfortable.

In the statement released on Monday afternoon, Smith apologised for his behaviour and said the incidents at the party did not reflect his behaviour at work.

"I am beyond gutted and devastated to know I have upset my colleagues after our Christmas party," Smith said.

"I apologise profusely to the women I upset. That's not the man I am at work, ever, as they will all attest. They have been so supportive to me and do not deserve such drunken treatment."

Smith blamed the incident on bipolar disorder and alcohol addiction, saying, "I have a recurring problem with alcohol... it sends me manic."

"I am in a facility receiving professional help to deal conclusively with my abuse of alcohol and solve this once and for all, without qualification… it can and will be done," he said.

“I will not be bullied”: 2GB hosts Chris Smith and Ray Hadley go head-to-head

2GB radio presenters Chris Smith and Ray Hadley have been engaged in a bitter stoush over the Coral Princess cruise ship scare.

Smith said he has hired defamation lawyers and rejected claims he had received money from the cruising industry after Hadley accused him of playing down the cruise ship’s decision to allow passengers to disembark in Sydney after recording 118 cases of COVID-19 on board.

“I’ve actually engaged two media defo lawyers and will work on that very closely on Monday,” he told listeners on Saturday.

The stoush began after Hadley slammed Smith for comments suggesting people “shouldn’t panic” about the Coral Princess, adding that he was “embarrassed to be on the same network” in a rant last Wednesday.
“One of my colleagues this morning was saying nothing to see here – it’s all wonderful,” Hadley said.

“I’m sorry – but the sort of nonsense I heard on the network this morning is just foolish. I’m almost embarrassed to be on the same broadcast network as that bloke. But anyway, that’s another story I’ll deal with privately.”

Smith, who had been filling in for breakfast host Ben Fordham for the week, hit back at Hadley at the start of his regular Saturday morning show, though he didn’t mention his fellow radio host by name.

“You may have been following the disagreements that have taken place here on-air over the arrival of the cruise ship the Coral Princess into Sydney Harbour on Tuesday,” he said.

“I made the point that considering 95 percent of us are fully vaccinated, considering the antivirals that are available now, the new Covid treatments, the testing kits, the many protocols we’ve adopted in two years, the cruise rule that states at a minimum you should be fully vaccinated — the arrival of the Coral Princess was absolutely nothing like the drama and concern that surrounded the Ruby Princess more than two years earlier.”

Smith described the situation surrounding the Ruby Princess as “a terrible tragedy” that “we were defenceless” to deal with.

“But the way the television media traced this latest ship’s every move was way over the top,” he said.

“That was my simple point. It was a beat-up, there was no comparison. There were no critically ill people, no ambulances, and at one stage just four passengers infected. That’s not the same as 28 passing away, no vaccines, no treatments, no protocols, no masks, no defence. Any reasonable person can see the contrast here.”

He went on to say that those who were “peddling fear”, particularly for those with loved ones on board, were “foul and shameful”.

“Peddling fear in this context is foul and shameful, especially for families with loved ones on board. It scares people for no reason, which is what Dr Nick Coatsworth said to me on the breakfast show as well,” Smith said.

“Which is why I said what I said. It was also consistent with what I’ve said throughout the second half of this pandemic — we need to live with this and stop panicking.

“I don’t hold a candle for the cruise industry, except I feel terribly sorry for the tens of thousands of families whose loved ones have been left jobless because the industry was shut down for so long.”

He emphasised that he wasn’t affiliated with the cruising industry, and that he had read commercials and taken listeners on cruises “without payment” and as part of his job.

“It’s not a paid role, I take no financial advantage from it at all, none, it doesn’t work that way. I have absolutely no link to cruise companies,” Smith said.

“Why would I ever go into bat for cruise companies for the sake of it? Anyone who suggests I have, anyone who peddles that suspicion had better be prepared to defend themselves in court — I know I can.”

Smith concluded by thanking fans for their support and stressing that he wouldn’t be intimidated by critics.

“I hold my head up high on this subject and won’t be intimidated, bullied or scared into acquiescence ever, so thank you so much for your overwhelming support, it’s been phenomenal. Those that have elected to go down a twisted path and get personal to hurt me have terrible glass jaws, they have copped a terrible bashing too on various media platforms which says it all. I will not be bullied, even by lifetime bullies,” he said.

“I love a good rumble, I look forward to further disagreements and I look forward to standing up for myself each and every time.”

Images: The Chris Smith Show (Facebook) / Getty Images

"He should never be released": Ben Fordham speaks out against killer's parole

The heartbroken parents whose teenage daughter was brutally killed by a 16-year-old boy have spoken about her killer potentially being released on parole.

Tania Burgess was on her way home from school on the Central Coast on July 19, 2005 when a 16-year-old boy followed and stabbed her 48 times before running off.

The school girl named her killer in her dying moments, who was then found and sentenced to 22 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 17 years. The sentence was appealed and reduced by four years.

The killer, known only as DL because he was a minor at the time of the murder, has been eligible for parole since 2018 and this is his last chance of it being granted.

Tania’s parents Mandy and Chris spoke to 2GB’s Ben Fordham saying DL’s release would be a “shock”.

“It’s hard to comprehend that, first of all, DL has never really admitted any kind of remorse. And yet his time is up. He may be set free,” Mandy said.

“He will never own the crime that he did. He virtually is unnamed as DL. (He’ll) just wipe 17 years off and start a new life, yet we lost our daughter.”

Fordham said the community would “be in danger from this person” as Mandy reflected on what her daughter’s life may have been.

“You can only dream what kind of life she might have had,” she continued.

“She was such a beautiful, caring, loving teenager. She could have maybe become a nurse, or some kind of health community worker. It’s hard to say. She loved her ballet. She might have been a ballerina.

“You can only let your imagination run really wild. But she was taken away from us. She was just a girl. She was just starting to bloom at 15. She was stolen.

“I try to block out those horrible images of what we saw that day, and remember Tania for who she was. Not what we saw, not what he did, but for what she was at the time. She was a beautiful, loving, caring girl, just starting her life.”

“The reality is that he should never be released,” Fordham responded.

DL’s case has two options - either he is granted supervised parole, or he can walk free at the end of his sentence without supervision.

Mandy said it would probably be better that DL be monitored to see what he’s like in public saying it would be “frightening” to know if he was out there not being supervised.

Images: Nine News

Australian Governor-General slammed for insensitive comments about the Queen

The Australian Governor-General has been slammed for making insensitive comments about the Queen during the Platinum Jubilee.

David Hurley, the Australian representative of Her Majesty, was in the UK for the Jubilee celebrations and appeared as a guest on Ben Fordham’s 2GB program.

Fordham asked Hurley about the possibility of Australia becoming a republic, however the response was not well received by listeners.

"I think at the moment people centre on the Queen, and then when she goes, when she passes, then the succession comes in, there's a new discussion in Australia," Hurley said.

Fordham immediately questioned what Hurley meant when he said “when she goes?”

“It's her big celebration. Imagine going to someone's anniversary or birthday party and saying 'now listen, when she's gone’.”

"We don't talk about that now. You're over there representing Australia and it hasn't gone down well I can tell you."

Some comments from listeners included: "Disgraceful, whose side is he on?"

“Very poor taste,” another commented.

"How insensitive can you get? And while he may be correct, I think it was a bizarre comment to be making during this very important celebration,” someone else said.

Fordham that despite her mobility issues, the Queen was “impressive” by making appearances during the Jubilee.

Hurley’s comments come just days after Matt Thistlethwaite, the Assistant Minister for the Republic, said it was time for Australia to think about what comes next when the Queen passes away.

"I'd like to congratulate the Queen on her jubilee and her reign. I think she's been a fantastic monarch and leader of the commonwealth,” Thistlethwaite said.

"But as she comes to the twilight of her reign I think Australians are naturally beginning to ask themselves what comes next for Australia.

"Do we want King Charles or are we mature enough or independent enough to look to appoint one of our own as our head of state?"

Ben said the comments from both Hurley and Thislethwaite were “appalling”.

Image: Getty

Could Alan Jones be making a breakfast radio comeback with John Laws?

Alan Jones was on the Laws’ show as a guest and the two radio personalities talked for a good half an hour, chatting about everything from where to get the best Indian food and whether Jones would like to “set the world on fire” by coming back to radio and working with Laws.

At one stage in the conversation, Laws point blank asked Jones: “Do you want a job?” Quick as a flash, Jones answered: “Put a bit of paper in front of me - you know what it’s like. It’s the same old rules isn’t it - you put a bit of paper in front of somebody.”

Laws asked again: “Why don’t you come here and work with me? We could set the world on fire you and me.”

To which Jones answered: “Why not?”

As well, the two radio veterans talked about the fact The Kyle & Jackie O Show which recently won the ratings for radio on both AM and FM. Jones said: “I never begrudge anyone’s success and they’ve earned it. They’ve worked hard for it. They’ve been at it for a long time and they’ve hung in [there]…”

Jones added: “At the end of the day, he’s not stupid, Kyle. He’s got real instinct and he’s relatable that people out there can relate to him. Says it as it is. And he can be amusing and entertaining, but equally he can cut through.”

“The bulk of the people in radio never win a single survey. You and I are very fortunate, we’ve won thousands of them. But there are people out there who go hard at it every day and have never won a survey,” Laws said.

So, if this chat between Jones and Laws is anything to go by, we could be seeing a partnering of the former radio rivals. They certainly seem to be getting on very well. Towards the end of their talk, Jones praised Laws, saying: “You are the legend of Australian broadcasting and the voice of a nation.”

Laws wrapped up the talk and referred to Jones as “his friend,” admitting they’d had their disagreements in the past but they’d got over these very quickly. Laws added:

“As I’ve said on numerous occasions, I have respect for Alan. I think he’s an excellent broadcaster and I think he’s got an extremely interesting mind and that makes him a cut above the rest – believe me.”

Alan Jones hosts final radio show after 35-year career

Alan Jones has wrapped up his final breakfast radio show and retired from the airwaves, ending a 35-year career.

In his final 2GB and 4BC program, the talkback host shared that he signed his first radio contract on a napkin.

He fielded calls from politicians, sport stars, celebrities, former colleagues and his listeners.

“It’s an extraordinary career by any estimation,” said Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who called in just before 7.45am.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller thanked Jones, describing the presenter as a “big supporter” of police.

NSW Deputy Premier and Nationals leader John Barilaro said Jones had been a “true friend” and a “champion for team Australia”.

Jones told listeners at 8.40am: “Mark Latham and Tony Abbott have just walked in the door. They’ve brought some grog with them!”

He dedicated the final program to his “loyal, supportive and sometimes critical” listeners. “The open line has been the democratic backbone in this country,” he said.

The 79-year-old announced his retirement from radio on May 12, citing doctor’s advice.

Jones’ radio career began at 2UE in 1985. He moved to 2GB in 2001, where he achieved a record 226 wins in rating surveys.

In recent years, Jones’ 2GB breakfast program had been impacted by sponsor boycotts following his controversial comments on female public figures, including former prime minister Julia Gillard and New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern.

His suggestions that Ardern should have “a sock down her throat” in August last year prompted more than 100 brands to boycott the show, resulting in an estimated advertising revenue loss of about $12 million.

In 2009, the New South Wales Administrative Decisions Tribunal found Jones to be inciting “hatred, serious contempt and severe ridicule of Lebanese Muslims” during on-air comments in April 2005.

He had described them as “vermin” who “rape and pillage a nation that’s taken them in”.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority also found Jones’ comments were likely to vilify people of Middle Eastern appearance and encourage violence in the lead-up to the Cronulla riots.

The former Wallabies coach is expected to continue writing for News Corp Australia’s newspapers and appearing on Sky News.

He will be replaced by drivetime host Ben Fordham, who is set to take over on Monday.

Roger Federer congratulates Alan Jones for stellar radio career

Tennis legend Roger Federer sent a surprising congratulatory message to radio heavyweight Alan Jones as he prepares for his final show on 2GB on Friday.

Jones announced earlier this month that he was retiring from his popular breakfast show for health reasons, explaining that doctors had warned him: “If you don’t stop, you’ll drop.”

The video message to Jones was aired on Sky News, where Jones also works as a TV host.

“Alan, it’s Roger here. I wanted to wish you all the very best for what’s to come, and many congratulations on an amazing 35-year career in the media business,” Federer said.

“Take care and all the best.”

Olympic sprint king Usain Bolt also sweetly sent Jones an audio message earlier, congratulating Jones on retiring at the “top of his game”.

“I just want to say congratulations on retiring at the top of your game,” he said.

“Thirty-odd years on the radio, you were magnificent, you impacted so many lives so continue doing what you’re doing and stay up, alright.”

Jones’ heavy workload in the media combined his radio, TV and print commitments, which doctors advised him stepping back for the sake of his health.

“I don’t want to dramatise this, but he (his doctor) said to me: ‘If you don’t stop, you’ll drop’,” the 79-year-old told The Australian. “There’ll come a time that your system will say it’s too late. You might be walking down the street when it happens.”

Jones also thanked his loyal listeners as he announced his retirement on-air two weeks ago.

“When the program ends at 9:00, it doesn’t end,” he said. “Another world begins. I’ve always taken the view that my listeners are my best researchers. The correspondence is given relevance and strength to the program content but answering it is immensely demanding.

“I’m immensely grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given to share ideas, help people and even argue with people on behalf of someone else. These are privileges in this industry that should never be taken for granted.”

Kyle Sandilands roasts Ben Fordham over new role replacing Alan Jones

Shock jock Kyle Sandilands has shared his two cents on the appointment of Ben Fordham as the new 2GB Breakfast show host after Alan Jones announced his retirement from radio.

Speaking on his KIIS FM radio program The Kyle and Jackie O Show on Tuesday morning, Sandilands said choosing the afternoons host as Jones’ replacement was a “massive mistake”.

“Ben Fordham need to cut his teeth a bit more,” Sandilands said.

“He’s too much of a yeller … he’s good in the afternoons. If it’s Ben Fordham, it’s a disaster. I like Ben, but nah.”

Sandilands rejected the suggestion that Fordham is a “star” on the Nine Network, which is owned by the same parent company as 2GB.

“He’s not the Channel 9 star – he’s never been a star in Channel 9’s eyes. He’d fill in for Karl [Stefanovic] when Karl was away, and that’s it,” Sandilands said.

“That’s what happens when a television station runs a radio network – no idea, no idea. That’s a massive mistake. Good luck, Ben Fordham.

“If you want to be yelled at by someone who knows nothing, Ben Fordham’s your man. Friend of mine, but now a mortal enemy to the death. I don’t mind Ben as a person, but he’s a little bit of a phony.

“Nice enough, I don’t know him well, but you can just tell this is a huge money-saving exercise over at 2GB.”

Sandilands also claimed he was once offered to jump ship to join the 2GB team.

“They made a real go to get me over at 2GB and I said, ‘No way would I ever been seen dead at the grandma station’,” Sandilands said. “You would have to learn about politics.”

“Does the bloke sleep with his wife or not?” Alan Jones blasts health minister

Alan Jones burst out laughing at the federal health minister after he struggled to explain what “self-isolating” from the coronavirus actually means for families.

The 2GB host claimed on Wednesday that he has been receiving dozens of calls from doctors and citizens asking how official health advice works in real-life situations.

“Does the bloke sleep with his wife, or not?” Jones asked minister Greg Hunt. “Does the bloke eat at the table with his wife?”

“Does … mum and dad send their kids off to school tomorrow, even though dad has tested positive and he’s meant to be home-isolated?

“Families are ringing me, and I don’t know the answer to that, I can’t provide an answer!”

Mr Hunt – whose government announced a $2.4 billion scheme to fund pop up clinics across the country – didn’t address Jones’ scenarios directly.

He said it was important for people to “keep that separation of more than a metre” from one another, before reiterating official advice in a lengthy explanation.

“If they’re not doing that, you can either have an individual who is isolated.

“Or if they are in close contact with those around them, the expectation would be that the family is not spreading out through the community.

“That’s the clear medical advice.”

That made Jones burst into laughter.

“That still is not clear … I’ve got doctors ringing me,” he said.

Mr Hunt said the government has a “principals committee” which would make sure families are provided with “additional advice.”

“The point of isolation is to keep people who were at risk, from the community and where there is someone who is actually diagnosed, they will actually be in hospital at the more severe end … or, if you have moderate symptoms, being at home, and you’ve been diagnosed, keeping a space from the rest of your family,” he said.

Jones said he still didn’t understand and “nor does anybody … I don’t think anybody knows what self-(quarantine) means”.

As of Wednesday morning, over 116 Australians have tested positive for COVID-19.
