A Mitsubishi Outlander seen at Bunnings Marion in Adelaide has become the centre of online disbelief after the driver appeared ready to take home a large load of fresh turf by stacking rolls on the roof and jamming more inside the vehicle.
The unusual scene was captured in photos showing the SUV heavily packed with grass as the driver prepared to leave. The images quickly drew attention online, where many people focused on the fact that Bunnings provides other ways to move bulky purchases, particularly since the vehicle seemed to have a towbar.
“He literally has a towbar,” one person wrote.
“Could of used one of the complimentary trailers.”
Another commented: “He’s in a Bunnings … he could’ve hired a ute to get it home or bought a tarp to wrap the grass in at least.”
“There’s no way he made it home with all of it left unless he went walking pace,” a third said.
The photos also prompted debate over how heavy the turf may have been and whether the SUV’s roof could safely carry that kind of weight, although the precise quantity of turf and the vehicle’s load limits cannot be verified from the image alone.
“I guess washing the car is easier then towing a trailer! We all have different strengths …,” one person mused online.
“Carbon neutral wagon,” another person joked.
The images kept the conversation going in part because turf can be much heavier than it looks. Australian suppliers estimate a typical 50 square metre pallet weighs between about 750kg and 1200kg, depending on the variety and how wet it is.
That has made the transport choice stand out even more, given Bunnings offers several options for oversized loads. Customers can use a free courtesy trailer for up to two hours. For longer jobs, Bunnings also offers trailer hire, with current listings showing a 6×4 box trailer from $28 for four hours and an 8×5 tandem trailer from $40 for four hours.
The retailer also hires out utes from $28 for one hour, while a van costs $38 for the same period. Bunnings says its utes have a maximum carrying capacity of 1000kg. Customers who would rather avoid transporting heavy purchases themselves can also arrange delivery from many stores.
