Australians will soon have the chance to collect a coin inspired by a popular Bluey episode called Cricket.
The beloved episode follows Rusty a young kelpie who loves cricket and spends countless hours practicing his batting.
In the episode he overcomes his fear of fast bowling and the struggles of missing his dad who is serving in the army, after receiving a letter from him.
“I wish I could be there to bowl a few at you, but I can’t right now, mate. But look, as you grow up, you’ll face harder things than a cricket ball and you’ll have two choices,” the letter read.
“Back away and get out, or step in front and play a full shot. Just keep your eye on the ball and take care of your little sister for me,” Rusty’s dad wrote.
While the dads struggle to bowl Rusty out, he gave his little sister a chance to shine, showing that cricket is about family, friendship and enjoying the game.
The Royal Australian Mint CEO Emily Martin said they wanted the coin to capture this idea of friendship, with the coin showing Rusty hitting the ball as Bluey cheers from the side.
“In the episode Rusty is going through a bit of a hard time, has to deal with a fast bowler, but also has to deal with his dad being away for work,” she told Today.
“The letters and the communication between them is just beautiful.
“It’s about generosity, it’s about imagination, it’s about friendship, and it’s something that we just love celebrating here.”
The coins will not be circulated but will be available for collecting, with 200,000 one dollar Bluey coins minted.
“This colourful coin brings together the fun of cricket with the heart and humour of Bluey, celebrating the friendships, teamwork and memories that make playing together so special,” Martin said.
“Cricket is a little bit like life — sometimes you hit a six, sometimes you miss the ball completely, and sometimes your little sister insists she’s not out.”
This is not the first time the Mint has released Bluey-themed coins. In 2024 they released Bluey Dollarbucks, a collection of three colourful coins featuring the beloved characters Bluey, Bingo and their family.
