Convicted child murderer Justin Stein has pleaded guilty to possessing child abuse material, adding to the list of offences he will be sentenced for later this year.

Stein, 35, is already serving a life sentence for the murder of nine-year-old Charlise Mutten, who was killed in January 2022.

He had been due to face trial in Penrith District Court on Monday after previously pleading not guilty to child abuse material and firearm-related offences.

However, Stein earlier this month pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing child abuse material.

It is not alleged the material was related to Charlise.

Stein will also be sentenced on a number of other charges, including aggravated break and enter, possessing ammunition without a licence, two counts of possessing an unregistered firearm and two counts of possessing an unauthorised firearm.

The offences stem from investigations carried out after Charlise’s death.

Stein was convicted in 2024 of murdering the nine-year-old at his family’s property in Mount Wilson at the Blue Mountains.

The court heard Charlise was shot in the hip as she attempted to flee before being shot in the face at point-blank range.

After killing her, Stein wrapped her body, placed it in a barrel and dumped it near the Colo River.

During his murder trial, prosecutors alleged Stein killed Charlise on January 11, 2022, or in the early hours of the following day.

At the time, Charlise’s mother, Kallista Mutten, was staying in Stein’s caravan at Lower Portland while Stein and Charlise were at his parents’ property.

The court heard that after the killing, Stein picked up Kallista and drove to Sydney before later returning to Mount Wilson.

He also sent messages to Kallista and his mother pretending to look for Charlise while, prosecutors alleged, he was driving around Sydney looking for a place to dispose of her body.

Stein denied murdering Charlise and fought the charges at trial before being found guilty by a jury.

He was arrested a week after the killing and was later charged with the child abuse material and firearm offences.

Stein is due to face sentencing proceedings on September 11.
