Veteran TV presenter Karl Stefanovic is facing intense scrutiny after a controversial episode of his independent podcast triggered outrage, with reports emerging of his imminent departure from Nine Entertainment as a result.
The drama erupted after Stefanovic interviewed British far-right figure Tommy Robinson on The Karl Stefanovic Show while in London. The episode, which was later removed from YouTube, Spotify and Instagram, quickly drew criticism over Robinson’s inflammatory views on immigration, Islam and multiculturalism.
During the interview, Stefanovic was seen joking and walking arm-in-arm with Robinson, praising his “tenacity” and “courage” – comments that reportedly alarmed executives and staff at Nine, where Stefanovic remains one of the network’s highest-profile stars.
According to reports, the fallout has led to internal crisis talks, with concerns over the impact on advertisers and the broader reputation of Nine’s journalism brands. The network has publicly distanced itself from the podcast, stressing it had no editorial involvement in the production.
The controversy has also reignited debate around what critics call the “outrage industry” – a growing media trend where divisive content is used to provoke strong reactions and drive clicks, listens and engagement.
Stefanovic, long known for his larrikin style and occasional headline-making missteps, has not publicly commented on the backlash. But with his contract reportedly under review, the latest controversy could prove to be one of the biggest challenges of his career.
Nine’s own outlets reported on Wednesday that the media company was “negotiating terms” for the longtime Today host to leave the network, following the threat of a damaging advertiser boycott made on Tuesday.
For now, the veteran broadcaster remains on leave from the Today show, while speculation continues over whether his time at Nine may be coming to an abrupt end.
