A 24-year-old woman has shared her shock online after her parents increased the rent she pays to live in her childhood home.
The woman, who pays rent monthly to her parents while still living in the family home, said her father had raised her rent to $1,200 per month, plus additional utility costs, to stay in her childhood bedroom.
Her parents also live in the property.
The woman shared her dilemma to Reddit on Monday, and explained that the rent had started out relatively low from a few hundred dollars a month, but had steadily escalated over time to a fixed $1,100 monthly payment.
She shared screenshots of a message exchange with her mother, in which she confirmed she would transfer her usual rent amount.
Her mother responded: “$1,200 per dad,” without any further explanation.
In her post, the woman asked whether she was overreacting to the sudden increase, but the response from Reddit users was swift and divided.
Many users expressed outrage at the situation and questioned the fairness of the arrangement.
One commenter wrote: “Charging your (adult) kid more than $300 to live in the room they grew up in is absurd to me. This is blasphemy,”
Another compared it to market rates, saying: “My one-bedroom is about $1,200 a month, including utilities. And honestly, if I wanted to, I could’ve found one a bit cheaper. I would definitely move out.”
A third was more blunt: “Get a studio, you’d be so much better off. Your own parents are scalping you. I wouldn’t forget or forgive this tbh.”
Not all responses were critical of the parents, some suggested the increase may have been a push towards independence.
One user said: “You’re 24, it seems reasonable. I think they are giving you a hint that it’s time to leave the nest.”
Another added: “You’re 24. You should be moving out either way. Find a roommate and get an apartment.”
A more optimistic commenter suggested the money could potentially be saved for her future: “I hope this is one of those instances where they’re making you pay rent, but saving your money for you without you knowing. I know some parents do that.”
Following the online reaction, the woman said she had been reassessing the situation, admitting she had not realised how unusual it may have been.
She wrote: “These replies have really opened my eyes. I’m very grateful for all the responses, honestly, I didn’t realise how bad it was.”
She added that she was now planning to move out within the next few months, though she was apprehensive about how her parents might react.
