A priceless piece of history has been returned home, with medals dating back to World War II reunited with a soldier’s family more than two decades after they went missing in Melbourne.
Police from Boronia, in the city’s east, said officers recently came into possession of six medals belonging to the late serviceman.
Although the soldier has since passed away, officers were able to trace and locate his son, who lives in Patterson Lakes in Melbourne’s south-east.
“Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Phillips personally delivered the medals to the owner’s son earlier this week, who was extremely grateful,” police said on Facebook.
“The family had not seen the medals for over 20 years, and they are now returned to their rightful custodians.”
The touching reunion quickly drew warm responses online, with many praising the officers for their efforts to bring the medals home.
“That’s beautiful, great work on finding and returning them home, that would have been so special for the family 💓,” one person wrote.
Another commented, “It sounds like those medals have a story to tell!” while another added simply, “That is fantastic.”
Facebook user Kka Fairweather also shared their appreciation, writing, “Love this so much. Great work!!!!”
The post has since resonated with hundreds of users, many describing the gesture as a reminder of the deep emotional value such heirlooms hold for families of those who served.
