Hundreds of thousands of aged care workers are set to receive a higher weekly wage following the Fair Work Commission’s decision to increase award pay.

“Aged care workers do an incredible job and they deserve every dollar of this pay rise that we’re delivering,” Treasurer Jim Chalmers said.

“This investment recognises the big contribution that aged care workers make to our economy and community and will help to create a bigger incentive for young Australians looking for a rewarding career, to pick aged care in the future.”

Registered nurses at level 2, pay point 3 of the award – the most common classification among registered nurses – will see an additional $60.20 a week.

Combined with previous federal government increases, this equates to an extra $28,000 per year, according to the government.

Enrolled nurses on a level 2 award will receive an extra $62.40 per week, while personal care workers on a level 3 award will see a $39.50 weekly increase.

The government said the wage increases will affect approximately 400,000 Australian workers.

Wages are expected to rise again next year, with the next adjustment scheduled for August 1, 2026, for registered and enrolled nurses.

Employment Minister Amanda Rishworth described the pay rise as an important step toward reducing the gender pay gap.

“Reducing the gender pay gap was one of the key reasons the government funded the 15 per cent pay increase for aged care carers,” she said.

Aged Care Minister Sam Rae emphasised the longstanding undervaluation of the sector.

“Aged care workers deserve better pay and more recognition for the meaningful work they do,” he said.
