Two women have died after being struck by a car while trying to help an injured kangaroo on a busy Melbourne motorway.

Emergency services were called to the M31 Hume Freeway in Craigieburn, in Melbourne’s north, just after 7.30pm on Thursday, September 4, 2025 following reports two women had been hit.

A 30-year-old woman from Beveridge, north of Craigieburn, died at the scene. A 30-year-old Thomastown woman, also from Melbourne’s north, was airlifted to hospital but later died from her injuries.

“It is believed the pair had stopped to assist an injured animal before they were struck,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and assisted police. Officers are now investigating the exact circumstances of the collision.

The speed limit on that stretch of the Hume Freeway is 100km/h. The highway itself spans 840km, connecting Melbourne and Sydney.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time on Friday, September 5.

Police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
