Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a three-month old baby who was struck by a train in Melbourne last night.

The child’s mother was also hit and is in critical condition in hospital under police guard.

Emergency services were called to Kumbada Avenue, in the suburb of Upwey in Melbourne’s east, at around 5.10pm on Sunday following reports the pair were hit by a train.

The child was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died.
