Melburnians have spoken and voted The Royal Botanic Gardens as the best thing to do in the state in 2025.

The results are based off a survey conducted by Time Out, where people were asked to share their favourite things to do and see, as well as the best places to eat and stay at across the state.

Votes were cast for the People’s Choice categories in September and October, and for Melbourne the historic landmark in the middle of the CBD has been chosen as the best thing to do.

Located right next to the Yarra River, the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne extends across 38 hectares and is home to more than 8,500 species of plants.

“This accolade reflects the deep connection Melburnians have with the Gardens as a place of beauty, relaxation and inspiration all year round,” Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria director and chief executive Chris Russell said.

“Whether it’s a peaceful walk, a family day out, or a cultural event, there’s always something that connects people to nature here.”

There are many events held in the gardens every year, including the Moonlight Cinema, an open air cinema that has been at the gardens for 30 years. Visitors can also grab a bite at The Observatory, or enjoy a picnic or walk at the park.

Last year, the park had over two million visitors.

Other activities that made the top of the list included:

  • Restaurant: The Lion and the Wombat
  • Bar: Bar Bambi
  • Regional venue: Brae Restaurant in Birregurra
  • Arts and culture venue: NGV
